A theory that has been discussed in my Viking group, is that they may have been wearing something very similar to the wool cap that the Roman legionnaires used as an arming cap. Love the use of Norwegian in the beginning of this movie😄

Eli from ZNA Productions talks about your inside joke things (whatever you want to call them) and its pretty cool. He had found a way to make a cheep helmet more comfortable with putting a knee pad in the helmet as the liner and I think that might be helpful for you. Also, congrats on 900k subs!

It's not the only complete helmet from the viking age, there are dozens all over Europe. It's the only complete one from Scandinavia though.

Skall, you used to do videos reviewing weapons and armour used in movies and tv-series! Those were super cool and I'd love to hear what you have to say about the HBO series Vikings! I know the series takes a lot of liberties in placing historical figures who lived 100-200 years apart in the same timeline and creating bloodlines that weren't there, but the raid of Lindisfarne serves as a good set historical date to which you might be able to use as reference.

How do you feel about the cost benefit of having the eye sockets in the helm as opposed to the visors in plate mail ? Is the extra protection worth the risk of decreased visibility ?

Skall, does it make sense to compare those helmets directly? I mean, were they THAT uniform? I'd imagine that anything produced before factories would have a lot of differences from item to item. Is that correct?

I own that same helmet. The problem with the fit is due to it being completely circular, it should be longer front to back than side to side. I solved the problem with a thin beanie that has a thin pad stitched in to the front that I wear like a thin arming cap.

Hey skall, I have a helmet I picked up at a fair a while back but I can’t find much info on it. It’s a similar shape to this with an aventail all the way around even attached to the face. It’s made of 4 separate plates riveted together. I’m curious to know if this was done historically.

I got a nasal helmet for around 60 bucks and with a good bit of padding it’s not half. So if you want a some what good armor for cheap then get a basic design with a metal like iron or mild steel.

I've been looking for a descent Anglo-Saxon/Norse helmet for ages, and all I see are the same things that are in each shop that sells swords online. Thanks, Skal, for the Royal Oak Armoury link. Do you, or anyone else have any links to armorers who make good quality helmets? I'm so glad you did a review of this one, as I've been contemplating buying it, but that finish is rough! for anyone in europe looking for one (and don´t want to spend gods know how much on shipping from america) I got one which is pretty comfortable and good looking (also has chainmail on the front and just to get it clear not 100 accurate) for 130 euros on Battlemerchant the only downside for that one is that the string that is used to sew the leather inlay is pretty crappy so i had to replace that and now it´s perfectly fine

Dude I have the exact same helmet. I got mine for like $50 maybe $69 tops off of male Amazon. The didn't come with us chain avatail. But the steel I think is the same 14 gauge mild. My big pet heave on wearing it is the sides give me enough space but the front or my faces and the back of my head they are very tight I mean obviously because of the shape of my skull. If I wanted to wear padding for sale 8 some Eastern style Viking fighting I don't know if I'll be able to wear for the front and the back because it's just too tight there but I could wear it for show doing western-style Viking fighting. Keep up with the great reviews bro

That helmet liner looks a lot like helmet liners used during the World Wars (especially the British Marks 1 and 2), and as such there either may be ways to readjust the liner so that it fits more comfortably or maybe additions that you can use to achieve the same result.

That's how my first helm is made and that liner just came right off after just a few hours of light use. Makes me feel like just ripping it out and using a thick padded cap would be better.

Whack it a few times on the sides with a mallet, you`ll gain forehead space and loose some side to side space. I`m sure it will bend easily and not break lol!

I'm a Christian and that Christian joke at the end was funny. About the helm, lemme share something i have learned about motorcycle helmets. They make them either oval or circular. Meaning some people have a thinner heads that are more oblong in shape. And your head looks more oval, so I would guess that the helm is made for a more roundish head. Like you said, armor should be fitted.

crazy glue the leather, hammer a bit (just to make the front flat) all the cylindric shapes around the top of the helm, chip that spike off and replace with a pommel (the ultimate pommel of head butt ending, preferably), and you have the ultimate helmet. oh and add metal until its 3mm thick. you COULD add wool on the inside but we aint men looking for luxury things.

The arming cap is definitely not a standard piece of attire as far as history can prove however the knit cap made from wool makes a nice padding before a helm is donned. Sheep and their wool were a staple in clothing from the time period, i imagine that if something were uncomfortable as a steel helmet is then putting one on top of a hat makes sense. Especially in the cold.

1. The helmet do slide a bit if you are not using a cap or at least a bandana. That's because it rolls and slides over the hair. I always tell my clients to use at least a bandana. 2. I ended up getting a conical helmet from cult of athena and crafting my own ocular and camail, maybe not the most accurate (who knows) but it looks much better and fits better.

How I see it is not every helmet would of looked exactly the same so the eye bits can be different to what was found on the farm and still be historically accurate.
