Wings and Wheels Alaska

Күн бұрын

We decide to attempt a hike to Byron Glacier. After traveling into the Portage Glacier area, we find the winter storms have not eased up at all and a ton of new snow had fallen. Once again our attempt to hike to the glacier was a bust but we did find a vehicle that needed a helping hand. After pulling him out with the Winnebago Revel 4x4, we decide it is time to go into Anchorage, Alaska and go shopping for some toys to assist us in traversing the snow a lot easier.

Your mention of Portage brought back so many memories! It was 1981, and my 5 yr old son and I arrived in Anchorage from Ohio in June. My then husband was an Assistant manager at the Holiday Inn on 4th St. Of course, due to the time difference, my son and I woke up at 4:30am! After getting breakfast in the kitchen, we set off to explore. We walked down the hill to the Alaska Railroad station and inquired about day trips from Anchorage. A very helpful employee told us that we could go to Portage that day and back and the price was right! I bought our tickets, and he suggested we head to the Army/Navy surplus store, which we did. There we outfitted ourselves with boots, a backpack, and rain jackets. Back to the hotel and the kitchen graciously fixed us sandwiches, snacks, and drinks for our adventure. Before we left I left a note at the front desk for my husband explaining where we were going. Then off we went. My 5 yr old and I were so excited! First time on a train! And in Alaska! We had a great day, marveling at the scenery around Turnigan Arm, and exploring Portage in the drizzled rain. That 5 yr old is now a 44 yr old Father with 3 sons of his own, and we still remember that adventure fondly! 💕

Hi Leah ~. This made me so so happy to read. What a beautiful memory to have and to share. Portage is a magical place and to put it into words or even in a video is impossible. To hear this says it all! Thank you for watching and for taking a trip down memory lane and making me a little misty eyed while I read it. Sending you warm love from Alaska. xoxo

@@WingsandWheelsAlaska So, what did I learn today? That it’s not so easy to give certain high dollar gift cards for Christmas to your loved ones! I decided several months ago that my grandchildren could get all the “material” things they wanted....given my budget constraints, so I ordered for them on Amazon, and proud to say, this time I didn’t use any Wish Lists! Oh No! But, for their parents I had long ago decided to give the gift of having a family experience! We are so lucky! We have so much! I initially thought I would give my sons and their wives a State Park Pass and they could use it as they wished. Take the kids, and stay in a cabin for the weekend! Well, that’s another thing I learned today! Grandma kinda ruined that by already doing that! So, all is not lost! Give them a gift card to spend as they like....with a few conditions! It must be spent on a fun family experience, and I expect pictures, and details upon your return! Win, win! Wishing you and Jim and your loved ones, including Ember, to be warm and safe, and more fun experiences! Merry Christmas, from Kentucky 🔥🎄🔥

So you guys totally nailed it with the "Ember cam". First-time I've seen this in similar content as your channel. What a great perspective and most of us who watch these channels/adventures really get a kick out of the fur babies involved. I hope you use it more. Who doesn't love floppy ears? Great narration tone to your content too. I like that you add little tidbits about Alaskan culture. That's also definitely white knuckle driving. Hats off to the man! I love seeing helping hands in action. People generally are kind and community minded. Glad your van was able to assist that poor car driver. Btw we visited the Portage glacier on our AK trip back in '95 from the UK. Was disappointed in Anchorage though. Not what I'd expected. It was only a 5 day visit, so we only got as far as Talkeetna. We flew up & back to Sea-Tac (we were in Bellingham for the 3 day fly in). It's on my bucket list to go back, and do things properly with my soulmate. My ex was only interested in planes and a terrible travel companion! Stay safe and well, my lovelies x
@WingsandWheelsAlaska
@WingsandWheelsAlaska 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sammi `. We agree on Anchorage. You know, it's Really taken a turn for the worse since 95 as well. Anytime anyone asks about Anchorage we're like "nope, there's better places!" I LOVE Bellingham too! You have to come back and do it right! Avoid all the "traps". We are thinking of doing a little project on Alaska now that we've seen the interest and we're stuck here. Don't want to say it on here, but what you just said sparked that even further. As you might know, I work as a flight attendant and I bring people into and out of Alaska, Hawaii and Mexico, Canada....and what you said is spot on to what I hear most often. "We thought it was one thing...but it turned into another". Planes have their worth, but there's nothing more exciting than seeing the world on 4 wheels. Thanks for riding along with us. We hope you make it back. xo

Thank you Mr. Bill. We appreciate the mask comment from your wife. Is it the Cowboys or the fact that he's wearing one? :) Ember was in doggy heaven the first time we took out the skis. Great video, really enjoyed it. Lived in Anchorage from 1989 to 1992. Been back several times, just not lately. Funny, still recognized the streets, the buildings and a lot of the scenery. Doesn’t seem much has changed in the last 30 years....I would mention, on that kinetic rope, if you give yourself between 3’ to 5’ of slack on the rope and accelerate away, mildly, you will pop the other vehicle right out. Didn’t notice you doing that, so I thought I’d mention it. Disregard if you had read instructions and already knew it. Thanks for helping folks, there everybody needs to be looking after everyone else, especially in the winter. Tough country.

Hi Vic great tip. I was trying to make it as small of a pop as possible to not jerk him too hard. I tried the first time just pulling then gave a little slack and he popped back a bit. He got stuck again then popped him again. I thought too much jerk would be bad for the car.

Brenda. Hi Love. We hope you're staying warm and happy. 4Runners are the BEST. We went back and forth on whether or not to show the accident. In the end we decided it would be a good reminder. We are hearing the Seward Highway being closed at least once a week, and far too often for a fatal accident this past winter. There's also a lot of politics behind this road as well. We alluded it it in the last two videos but the cost of fixing the road vs. loss of life. It's taken years to start the improvements. The area of the highway that isn't plowed is a daily commute for some and the State is in a battle over who should maintain it, all the while people are getting injured and killed. ANYWHOOOO.......😂😂😂😂😂. Ember is always the comic relief in every aspect of our day. I don't think there's a day that goes by that if I start to feel stressed or unsure about anything, all I have to do is look at her and think "What would Ember do?" 😂 Much love to you Brenda. xoxo. ❤️

Hey guys! great video as always!!! Just a tip: use the shackles from you bumper when you are going to pull a vehicle, if you are going to put the strap to the winch: USE the winch! The motor and "brakes" on the winch are designed for the forces of the winch, not pulls from the truck!!!! this way your winch is going to last a lot longer... Good move in that weather to put the shackles on early! Saves grief later on. Our dogs have the same duck as Ember -- well sort of the same duck, somewhere along the line it lost its head. Good on the cross country skies, us old-times have mostly traded them in for snow shoes now. Safer more controlled speed (what speed?) in most situations but cannot go as far usually. But they do get you into the wide out doors. We packed them on our 2 trips to the west in the spring of "17" and "18" and she used them 3 times in "18" on that trip. Safe travels your winter is really settling in now.

Hi Guys! #21 is the running back Zeek. I dunno, I'm just writing what Jim says. Gotta give it to Jim for his loyalty. 4x4 is helpful but not necessary. We drive in 4x4 most of the time and it gives additional security but it also makes people feel overconfident. Fingers crossed these borders open and we can all take our Revels out adventuring together. I miss their humor and sitting around the fire listening to music. I love that Alaska inspired that passion in him to start playing again. Hey, you need to convince Owen to start playing again in his videos. (shh don't tell him I told you) 😂. Have a great week. ❤️

Thanks! I see you just subscribed. Thank you so much! Yes, flying the drone is what Jim loves to do! However, we already lost one Mavic to these conditions. We recently received our Skydio and I (Cynthia) have the Mavic Mini). The Skydio is a learning process and the Mavic Mini has it's limits in these conditions. (The lighting for the three hours we have daylight is also a factor....we have no light0 😂 Drone footage will become more...however, it's also really easy to overuse the shots. I'm sure you see that in others videos. You'll see, it really depends on the day but we're being cautious with the Skydio. Our next video shows us taking it out for the first time. Thanks for being here with us. Alaska is even more beautiful from the sky for sure! 😁❤️

Hi Kim. I just gave Ember a hug around the neck from you. She's in a mood today. I think we ran her too hard yesterday. 😁. Yes, 50 words for snow! I said, "Alaskas indigenous people" because there's several different tribes with different spoken languages. Each word describes the snow. In English we just have "fluffy snow", "Wet snow" with an adjective before it. In Inuit, they have words to actually describe the type of snow it is that day, or for their hunting conditions. Really interesting to think of. Thanks for being here with us guys! ❤️❤️❤️

Looks like you’re off to a very interesting start with this video. The inclusion of preview footage of this episode was an interesting addition. I think it gets people invested in the video early on, and stokes curiosity. I’ve heard that story before about the 50 words for snow, and yet no one ever tells us any of the other 49 words for snow, because we all just use “snow”. 😂. I loved the lower camera footage while Ember was out running around, showing her perspective. I’m also a fan of “Ember-Cam” for lack of a better descriptor. Have you ever noticed that her ears flap up and down like bird wings? It’s a cool perspective. I also loved the pan out shot of Cynthia playing with Ember in the snow, set low enough where the grasses tower high like trees. The good news about the low light days right now is that we’re almost to Solstice. One more week and the Sun will become more and more pronounced. It was great seeing Jim add the shackles to the bumper. It’s always good to have them on as in difficult driving conditions, you’ll likely need them, as was seen in this video. I’m still surprised that you don’t have more snow than you do. I’ve always pictured Alaska as being this vast snowy place where if you don’t use snowshoes you’ll disappear beneath the snow (which I guess was that deep up at Byron Glacier where you show only the top of a sign still exposed above the snow). So far, from what you’ve shown, that isn’t the case as I’ve only seen a foot of snow or less. Seeing Jim scraping the windows does pose an interesting question. How does the defroster work on such a large front window? I loved that you were able to help pull out those Subarus. I’m actually impressed that they got so far in such a low-clearance vehicle. They have all-wheel drive, which certainly helps. And you’re right, you have to give them credit for their adventurous spirits. That tow was what I always pictured of Alaskans. Always helping each other out. I was surprised to see REI in such condition, but I’m happy to see that Play It Again Sports was there for you. I see that you bought cross-country skis. Just be careful. No twisted ankles! I loved the Emerson quote at the end. If ever there were a quote that describes you two well, it’s that one. Keep up the excellent work you two, and congratulations on 15,000 subscribers!

Hello Dear Brian! I hope you're having a wonderful week. Did you get the picture Jim sent? It was a time for celebration and I wanted you to be there with us. 😁. But then I blinked and we grew again, and it made my tummy tumble with butterflies because this is both exciting and terrifying because this was never even a goal. Like...ever. YOU know I was struggling with talking to the camera, YOU know how narration evolved and how you encouraged it. You put these little thoughts into our heads and we roll with it and for that, I certainly can't thank you enough. I thought about getting more into the "words for snow" but then I was just blabbing so I kept it broad at "Alaska's indigenous people". There are several tribes with different languages spoken so it's easy to have different words for a substance, but what's crazy to think is they didn't have an adjective to describe it. For example in Inuit "Fine snow" is "Kanevvluk". Soft snow is "muruaneq" and so on. And then there's Yupik with a different dialect. As you may know, language intrigues me. The Ember Cam - The first time we put it on her and it fell in the water...Oh Brian, we laughed until we cried when we reviewed that footage! Her perspective of the world is nothing but PURE JOY. Snow ~. Oh, it's still falling. Do you remember last year at this time when we celebrated our Christmas together? It was 42 degrees and all slush! It's been hitting us decently this year, certainly depending on elevation. And YES you caught that sign at Byron Glacier! The avalanche danger is also a real deal on days like this one too. I'm sure you heard about Haines and the landslide? This is the storm that caused that. All is calm right now. It REALLY is a battle to get out of bed when the days are this short.(also, filming anything is also a challenge with low light 😂) Also, REI isn't just in that condition, this entire city is and it's so incredibly sad to see, but I have no doubt it will bounce back. We're human. That's what we do. Again, I can't thank you enough for your incredible insight, perspective, love and support. You're like family to us. Have a beautiful Day Brian. Cheers!

@@WingsandWheelsAlaska Yes, I saw that picture Jim sent, and I loved it! I was so proud and happy to see you two hitting 15k, and yes, I poured a glass of Woodford Reserve to toast to you as well! Jim even commented on my Stanley Thermos flask! 😂. I think, to be entirely honest, that the reason your channel is growing so well is that you two are “real” people. So many KZfaqrs put on a happy face for the camera, yet I’d wager that the moment that camera gets turned off, they’re right back to frowns. I can easily tell that they aren’t happy people. And this has nothing to do with hardship or sadness (which you’ve struggled with), this is that they are faking it, and I can see right through it, as can others. You, on the other hand, may have your down days, but at least you’re real about it. People latch on to things like that, and I think your channel will continue to grow significantly as a result. We all enjoy Jim doing funny stuff in the background, you smiling while trying not to slip on the ice, and the incredible ways you show us your incredible State.

October will be perfect. Although I know you're going to freeze but that will be the fun of it! 😂. I was going to mention "this is why you don't let kids ride in campers) but....I didn't even want to show the accident but Jim disagreed and said it's the reality so it needs to be seen. It wasn't a fatal crash but I have no doubt there were serious injuries. Staying safe and happy. Went skiiing hungover and ended up with a bruised tailbone. 😂. Love ya. ❤️😊❤️
