Young Dillon Reeves stepped in to save the day when his school bus driver became incapacitated following a medical emergency. Correspondent Steve Hartman talked with Reeves, and his parents, about why the Warren, Michigan, middle school student was able to spring into action while so many other kids could not.

I never had a cellphone until I was an adult and could pay for it myself. Also wasn't a hero

I had one in highschool. But this was 1999 which was not heard of. I paid for my own phone 😂 . Very expensive for the time

Thankfully another child had a cell phone to call 911, that also saved the drivers life. Infact cell phones save lives, help find lost children and notify people of public emergencies and of abducted children through amber alerts but none of that makes people feel good about themselves as much as publicly shaming children and parents for providing a cell phone to their family.

Dillon Reeves was a hero for what he did especially for his ability to act quickly and clear-headed without panicking during a moment of crises. But let us not forget the other big heroes here, Dillon's parents. It was their guidance, and wisdom that molded this fine young man into what he is today. The fact that they were wise and cared enough about their son to withhold giving him technology that makes young minds and senses dull, speaks volumes. They are the heroes behind the hero. Lazy parents give their children cell phones and tablets to entertain and babysit their kids for them so they don't have to, that's poor parenting. Back in the day it was the TV that did that job for uncaring parents, today it's cell phones.

Wow, are you judgy! First off your building a story that you believe to be real of which you do not know, Your presuming the quality of people you do not know and not mention from you that thankfully someone on the bus had a cell phone so they could get help for the driver whos life may have been saved because a parent gave a cell to their child. Additionally you do not mention the fact that CBS Sunday Morning publicly shamed children so their viewers can feel "wiser". A life was saved, that's the story, be thankful Dillion was able to do something and anither child called 911. Making a moment to attack parents and children with phones so you can feel better and wiser is gross, disappointing, and seems very disconnected from the modern world.

He’s a superhero. A real superhero. Other forms of superheroes in real life are those middle school or elementary school kids with a high IQ. His friends and parents must be proud

I held off on cellphones and electronics as well for my kids. They were avid readers and top of their classes. It works

A friend of mine had not heard this story. When I mentioned that apparenlty, all of the kids on the bus save one had been focused on their electronic devices, I was surprised when she said, "But what else are they going to do on a boring bus ride?" Surprised because we're both baby boomers and survived the bus rides to and from school every day for years without cell phones, thank you very much. We talked to each other, played cat's cradle, rock, paper, scissors, or just plain looked out the window. No problem.

AMEN!! My friends and I rode the school bus too and we knew where every kid on that bus lived, we waved to their Moms & Dads if they stood outside waiting for their kid. We knew all our friends' dogs names! We knew our bus driver's name and all about her kids. We talked and we knew all about each OTHER!! The bus didn't stop at every house. About 10 of us gathered every morning on certain bus stop corners in our little neighborhood.We're all still very close, those of us that are left. Our daughter went to a high school of only about 75 in her Class. I was picking her up at school one day & I saw the prettiest little girl walking all by herself. I told my daughter, That girl looks just like you! What's her name? My daughter said, "I dunno. She's not In My Group." I said AMY JO!! Shame on you!! If you don't know the name of every kid in your class and she might be REAL LONELY!! She said I don't KNOW HER!! I said Well everyone you know NOW were people you USED TO didn't know!! I was so disappointed.

okay but also how old are you? I agree kids need these devices later in life but its unrealistic in 2023 and beyond to expect these kids to not have these tools. Really what it boils down to is teaching kids when to put the phone down!

It’s so funny how he’s so annoyed by the fact that he doesn’t have a phone, and he clearly wants one. I hope his parents will indulge him and get him a phone. He’s a hero!

What a COOL kid! Situational awareness is LIFE-saving. For yourself, for others. Love the expression on his face when he discusses the cell phone “predicament.”. I get his temporary pain. BUT….his lack of a phone literally saved injuries, if not a life. Important lesson for us all. There is a time and place for everything. Teach yourself, teach others, LIVE action is more important than what is on an electric device. I’d give him a phone now because he is aware of the assets/liabilities of having and having not. He understands responsibility. I salute you, Sir. 🙋🏼‍♀️👏🏻❣️

And more parents who raise their children to not follow the crowd. This boy is a hero. What would have happened if he too had had a device and was tuned out like the rest of the kids on the bus.

that's totally true, gadgets has the negative side of effect- disconnects us around us, on bus or private cars, passenger all eyes and ears are on phone, very few or even none is looking up on the road or on the scenery or the establishments being passed by

I don't own a cell phone. When I'm driving I make sure not to daydream and glance in my rearview mirror and use my peripheral vision to have an overall picture of what vehicles are doing what at any given time. Don't ever take for granted that the other driver is doing what he should be.

I didn’t have one for a long time, but I was a long distance bicyclist 🚴‍♂️, and my friends convinced me that it would be a good safety precaution. I bought the simplest model I could find with a large range. I did need to use it once when someone else crashed and hurt themselves badly. I never use my phone in my car. If it rings, I wait until I’m parked and then return any important calls. You have to consider where and when you travel. If you don’t travel in remote locations, you’re probably going to be ok without a phone.

If that kid had a phone, he would still know what's happening around him. Think about it. If you took the phones away from all those other kids, how many of them would have been as aware of their surroundings. That kid deserves to have a phone. He would still do the right thing.

Good story. Perhaps there's a happy medium here. He might be allowed some time on a phone within limits. He obviously wants one, and these days it's important for kids to learn how to negotiate their way with technology. But his parents are right to be concerned about excessive use of one. This episode with the bus proves the point. Imagine what could have happened if he had been on one, too. I've found out the hard way myself they are addictive, but the first step to getting past it is to recognize and admit you have a problem with it. This young man has a great start - blessings to him.

We knew he didn't have a phone, because on the video, you can see where he tells someone to call 911. If he had had a phone, he would have done that himself

@@LindaC616 he was still tending to the emergency. The bus driver was slumped over. He was right there to check on the driver, and the one taking charge, so that's the person who tells others what to do in an emergency.

I would love an update on the driver's condition. Every story I've seen doesn't address if the driver is alright. I assume they didn't die in this incident, right?

An accident was prevented because of the actions of this young man. I would assume the driver was tendered to as you can hear the young man say “call 911”. If the driver wasn’t ok then that would have been addressed.

It's not just a lesson about distractions and situational awareness. This kid also had enough general knowledge to know what to do, meaning his parents or someone had helped to make him aware of the basics of what symptoms can mean a medical emergency, what to do in one and the actual mechanics of stopping a vehicle safely. It isn't enough to just limit devices and other distractions; parents need to actively engage with their kids and teach them to actively engage with the world (something missed by both helicopter parents and neglectful or too busy parents).

Most of the time I'm perpetually on my phone at home or on the computer but I refuse to sacrifice my awareness when I go out in public the places I go to shop can often be dangerous in fact I rarely check my phone at all in town. Thank God that this kid was not on his phone and was paying attention and good on him for knowing what to do

Love his old school pre teenager attitude, see that less and less with kids today. They are way too passive now of days. Also they way he said "my parents are.....old school" was also an old school way of saying it.
