The most important politician in Kentucky's history. Henry Clay was a Warhawk, a compromiser, and a presidential candidate. His influence on the nation and the state and a huge impact!

One of the most important US politicians who never became president. Kind of surprising that he didn't

Henry Clay was perfect. He understood his people and he was a great compromiser, had he won he would have been able to end the issue of slavery in a gradual way that wouldn't have made issues harder for the United States in the long term.

He owned and benefited from slavery. I doubt what you said is true. Remember, the war wasn’t about ending slavery…

@@LivelifeLit 1. The first 7 original Confederacy states wrote in their Seccession documents they left the Union for the eternal slavery system! 2. Any Amandment of the USA Constitution wants agreement of the 3/4 (75%) of the states. So Politicians knew the USA government could not have abolished the slavery system. Only one and one invidual state could have abolished the slavery, explanation Delaware state had 1.4% slaves so Delaware would abolish the slavery in 1870, Missouri had 9.7 % slaves so Missouri would abolish slavery system in 1880 and so on. The Republican party wanted only the future states as Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Colorado, North Dakota and so on should have been free work states. The South offended the future South Dakota would be without slavery system. 3. After two years Civil War the Congess, the Government could say the 11 Confederate states were in rebellion against the majority of the USA population and the majority of the States so the EXCONFEDERATE STATES LOST ANY RIGHT FOR VETO AGAINST AMENDMENT OF THE USA CONSTITUTION! So January of 1865 the 13th Amendment of the Constitution was accepted by Congress and more states than 3/4 of the 36 not rebel states! 4. Using the pseudonym "Scaevola" (in reference to Gaius Mucius Scaevola), Clay advocated for direct elections for Kentucky elected officials and the gradual emancipation of slavery in Kentucky. The 1799 Kentucky Constitution included the direct election of public officials, but the state did not adopt Clay's plan for gradual emancipation.
