Mamod Live Steam Train Set Video: • Reviving A Pair Of Mam...
I'm outside again today taking a first look at the 44 year old Hornby G100 Stephenson's Rocket 3 1/2 inch gauge live steam set from 1978. This has never been steamed but has been out on display for many years. Lets see if I can bring this back to life. Thanks for watching

Can't wait👍 I drooled at Rockets in a local toy shop, £50? clearance in the very early 80s, May as well had been a million pounds😵‍💫

At 14 I drooled over this too, but you were getting £1 per week pocket money it was unattainable that’s for sure. After a month or so I gave up and decided my money was better spent buying Wrenn wagons for my OO layout. I also realized that I was going to get pretty bored just running it round and round.

Thanks for watching, I wonder if these ever made a profit for Hornby? It must have cost a lot to put these into production. Best regards to you

Good morning Mr Snooze what a terrific group of items, I love the promotional literature, sadly missing from my collection of catalogues of the period. I remember a school friend of mine getting one of these for Christmas at the time and going to his house to see it running after school one day. It looks just as terrific today as it did back then. Very much looking forward to seeing and hearing this in action. Take care. Oscar

Wow, what a thing. It's beautifully made and I can't imagine Hornby making this sort of thing today. Imagine how much they would charge for it? You must have been thinking about getting this going for years. What a fascinating series this will be. 😊

Hello Pauline, It's good to hear you are interested in seeing what will happen with this. I imagine if made today it would be super expensive. It would be interesting to know if it would meet modern safety regulations as well. Take care, all the best to you

That is another wonderful looking treasure you have, I remember it well from the catalogues but never saw one on the flesh. I look forward to seeing your strip down service and investigation hopefully it'll be nothing you can't sort out, it'll be great to see it in steam. I do think it's a shame Hornby used so much plastic in the construction it certainly could have benefited from some metal in the key points of stress.
@MrSnooze
@MrSnooze 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Robin, I think stripping this down will be fun. I agree with you that a little more metal would have been good but it is what it is and it's still looking pretty good for 44 years. Thanks for watching, all the best to you

The Triang coach names you were trying to recall were the names Times, Experience and Despatch. So two names quite different with the large scale names and I don't think repeated in the recent Hornby new tooling of the coaches. The coach appealed to me for display as being more of a scale outline without the burner operating parts etc. However I never came across one here in Australia.
@MrSnooze

Hello John, after I filmed this I had a look at my little Tri-ang Rocket. It is interesting about the coach names, I wonder if they are fictional or the real items shared these sort of names or even if there was a coach made in real life like this. Something to research on a winters evening. The coach itself is a great item and I think provided it is used with care should stand up to some track time. Take care, all the best to you

I've run that loco for a Sony video in the year of the Falkland's war and it was too fast so I had to tie a string to it to enable filming.

Thanks for watching Geoffrey, so you had fun with one in the early eighties then. the string must have given you a bit more control, I am a bit concerned it might go fast. Take care, all the best to you

Fantastic train! I was lucky enough to see the real Stevenson's Rocket when it was in the Science Museum in London. It looked pretty grubby and black instead of the lovely yellow when original, everyone with me (wife & kids) was confused as to why I was so interested in this old engine when there was so much other stuff to look at. Just wondering if you did get it working as I have looked for a link to a follow up video but can't find it?

Thanks for the very interesting coverage. A worry that some new owners of an old but looking mint model may not check the safety valve in the urge to get a shelf model running. An alternative safety valve may be the later improved combined filler and safety valve you referred to in your talk on the model I expect almost impossible to find and original item but maybe one could be made up from available parts for other pressure related purposes. I think Hornby later saw the demand for shelf models and sold less expensive non working models as an option.
@MrSnooze
@MrSnooze 2 жыл бұрын
Hello John, I had a quick look for the combined item and aftermarket ones are available occasionally. I think if I want this to be original I ought to investigate the original valve thoroughly. You are right about being careful with stored items like these or other makes. It makes sense to check everything first. Thanks for watching, all the best to you

Hello Bob, this track is quite a bit bigger than the Mamod track. This 3 1/2 inch track looks quite big when compared against the Mamod which I think is standard 'O' gauge. Thanks for watching, all the best to you

Great model and some really good innovation by Hornby . Not seen one up close before. Mind you that was a tremendous price hike from £59 to £99 (£400 in todays money according to the internet)I think if I had paid £99 for it back in the early 80s I would expect more metal as opposed to plastic…I guess, though, everything on that model is bespoke to that particular loco so I suppose to cover the cost fully it would be expected to be expensive. I can’t help but wonder if a later combined filler and safety valve would screw into the filler fixing of the earlier model rendering the original safety valve obsolete. Most modern “live steam” garden railway locos seem to use steam oil to internally lubricate valve gear and pistons…..makes me wonder if wear, particularly on the valves, would quickly become a problem.
@MrSnooze
@MrSnooze 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrew, thanks for watching this. The cylinders and valves seem nicely made with oilers fitted. I spent a while going over everything with the same steam oil I use on my Mamod and other steam engines. I would imagine most owners didn't run them that often. The part that actually worries me is the gearing behind each front wheel, it is not that heavy duty so it will be interesting to see how it operates. I had a quick look for a newer safety valve filler but being a bit inquisitive I shall have to check the original. If its there it needs to work I think. Take care, all the best to you

Is there anything you do not have in your collection Mr. Snooze? This is an amazing product. I wonder if Hornby has a drawer or shelf of odd parts and a safety valve amongst them? I shudder to think of what I was earning in the mid 70's when looking at those prices. Regards, David.

Very interesting to see this classic relic. As an alternative to stripping the whole model, can you try to source a filler cap safety valve? With that much track this must have been intended as a Garden or G Gauge alternative? Mon from Brisbane

At 3.5 inches it is twice the gauge of G track using the gauge 1 size.
