I've only had one dog in six decades of dogs, not like me. That dog was a Bouvier. It was terrifying. He backed ne into a corner and wouldn't stop barking and lunging at me. I tried being calm. Tried being assertive. Tried bribing with treats. Finally, out of options, I turned my back to him, and stood facing a wall. Remember, I was in a corner with no escape route. That worked, after a few minutes he lost interest and moved away. I was able to dash into a room and close the door until his owner (a guest of my room mate, they were both out having dinner) came home. The dog loved everyone but me. I think it was because I was out of town when he arrived, and only showed up after he had been in the house long enough to feel it was his to defend. These are wonderful dogs, but insanely powerful and smart, and I would only suggest as a dog for an experienced owner, not a first timer. Also, he left what I can only describe as a pool of water on the floor after drinking. It required a full size bath towel to mop up after him, and he empitied the large water bowl each time.

He halfheartedly listened to others, it took physically going and getting him, he listened well to his owner, and he wanted me out of the picture lol. I wasn't afraid of him. I think that bothered him more, and when I turned my back to him, he lost interest in me.

Look I know nothing but in 1989 I met a bouvier in West Germany. Maggie (short for Magnificent....something something...pure bread child of champion something 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂), was a big black muscle-bound 2 year old. She was part of an American family (Mike, Debbie and Josh), who looked after me as a 19 year old student. They were my amazing family, in Germany. I love them dearly. I called her The Bear! They told me her mother (best of breed somewhere), could leap 8 ft fences. Maggie used to go to their 1ft German fence and say to herself "nope, stuck here"! They did NOT want her to discover jumping 😂😂 She used to pull the 8 yr old Josh around using the figure-of-8 rubber thingy like he was a doll......all the time to "Maggie, stop, no, stop". Not a chance he wanted her to stop. I am not sure, but I think Belgian breeds have an extra zing in their butts.

My friend had a Bouvier, a blonde variety, and when all us young parents would go to the park with Rusty (the Bouvier), he would herd all the toddlers by running around the 5 - 7 kids pushing their behinds with his snout and using the side of his body to make she none of the kids would get lost lol! It was hilarious to see him herd the toddlers, and the toddlers laughed and giggled, because it was just play to them. Poor Rusty was exhausted at the end of the day. They are very compassionate and loving dogs who want to be with their families.

RIP to Zeus, my brother's beige Bouvier. He lived to just past 10 years and we all loved him. He was a giant lap dog oaf lol. It was 'his job' to care for and herd any kids and grandkids and to run around the pool whenever any of us were in it. However, we were required to splash him with water frequently per his demands. My eldest boy, Coco, (who is now 12), looked like a mini me of him but he is older lol. He was just a good dog. He would only listen to tall people though. We had one of these at the K9 section when I was in the Air Force, thank god I had a German Shepard mix that weighted 85 pounds. The Boove weighted right around 110 pounds he was huge and the agility that dog had was amazing. We were doing aggressor training one day and one of my fellow dog handlers was in the Bite Suit outside the kennel compound and winding the dogs up he then ran off into the forested area for them to find. The handlers were inside the compound with their dogs, the Boove got so worked up that he broke off his leash and jumped a six foot tall fence with triple strand barbwire above that and went after the decoy. They are amazing dogs.

ahhh finally a bouvier!!! this was my childhood dog and she was amazing, she was definitely my mom's dog and followed her around the house and my mom always remembers our bouvier as the best guard dog. My dad had to go out of town a lot when my siblings and I were little, and my mom took so much comfort in knowing that our bouvier would not hesitate to protect us and definitely had the strength to because she was a force to be reckoned with ❤ She definitely fit the herding dog stereotype tho and ran circles around my siblings and friends lol, so happy to see this breed featured on your channel 😊

@enlightendbel Жыл бұрын
Our first Bouvier would tell us my mom was "about" to come home 5-10 minutes before she actually did. And it wasn't that she'd be home about the same time every day. My moms job had her come home between 4pm and 8pm, highly variable. After understanding what she came to tell us, I started messaging my mom to see about where she was on her route home and it would seem that siting outside, listening to the environment, she was able to pick up my moms car up to 3 miles away if the wind came from the right direction. When my mom got a new car, it took only a month before she was familiar enough with the new car to get back to telling us my mom was about to come home. Bouviers are one of the smartest dog breeds I've ever had and them being so good as guard/police/military dogs comes from how smart they are and able they are to pay attention to their environment to the level of detecting either familiar or strange sounds literal miles away. It's unfortunate that them being so energetic has made them unfavored as family pets, which has hurt an already low population breed even further. They were nearly wiped out during the World Wars and their population still hasn't recovered to a level they have a healthy population.

My funniest dog show moment occurred many years ago and I still think about it and chuckle. There was the obedience ring where a big Bouvier suitably named "Moose," was going through his paces with his owner. On the outside of the ring a person walked by with a beautiful Alaskan Malamute who was truly stunning. Moose spotted her, fell in love, and left the obedience ring to follow her. Moose's owner was not immediately aware that she was alone until people pointed out that her dog that she had left at a stay had decided to go flirt. She ran out of the ring to grab Moose who was flirting with an annoyed Malamute and her equally annoyed handler. That's when I fell in love with the breed, although I've never had one. They are warm and friendly dogs, but definitely a handful. Seeing Oakley reminded me of that story and I thought it was hilarious enough to share. Moose's owner, by the way, turned shades of red that I'm pretty sure I have never seen in a human being ever since. 🤣😁

We loved her but we were in way over our heads. Our yard was too small, my dad didn’t know how to properly train her, and she kept running away to our neighbors yard. My Dad made the hard but right decision to rehome Sedona to a family much better suited for her. Broke my heart then but I understand why he did it now. I had a friend with a Bouv many years ago. Rosie was a working dog and accompanied my friend into bad neighborhoods for protection when he had to pick up medical specimens for transport. Rosie wore a spiked collar when she was working, and you didn't mess with her then. Once that collar came off and she wasn't in protect-mode, she was the sweetest dog you'd ever meet. She'd come around to every staff at the job for pets, then move on to the next person for more pets.

Over here in Flanders (and most of Europe), couping/docking ears and tails has been illegal for quite some years now and you'll rarely see any that still look like this. Modern Bouviers in Europe have small floppy ears (their natural ears don't get all that much larger than this ones were docked as) and their tails are similar to that of a Golden Retriever, plumed and curved up. I've had Bouviers most my life and they are fantastic dogs. One of the few breeds so smart you can often observe them and see they are just standing there, looking around, observing their surroundings and thinking about what to do next. They are super intelligent, loyal to extremes and like Vanessa said, no clue how strong they are. Most of the ones my family and I had got to 14-16 years old. They are cowdogs, but a good chunk of their existence hasn't been in herding cattle, but drawing milk carts and doing other actual labor, which is probably why they are built like a brick house and ridiculously strong. The reason their tails used to be docked was to make it easier to draw carts. This part of their classic job is part of why they are so ridiculously strong and have energy for days. If you ever get one, start going to puppy school ASAP and for your and the dogs sake, don't stop going until they are at least two years old. And yeah, that white spot on their chest, that's the breeds signature. There's some that have some white in their beard and on their tails too.

Oakley was amazing for behaving during his grooming session. I have to give credit to Oakley's owners for training him to be extremely well-behaved.

I have a Bouvier and they are a huge pain to raise from a puppy, but I adore my little guy! Not recommend for inexperienced owners.

When getting a Bouvier, you should be ready to take them to puppy class asap and continue to go to dog school for at least 2 years. They'll mellow out in terms of being a handful mentally (this "they are puppies until 2-3 years old is really no understatement), but they will still need an outlet for their physical energy for the rest of their life. Bouviers weren't just cowdogs, for a period they were used as work dogs, to draw milk carts and the like, they were bred to do actual physical daily labor, not just run around all day.

OMG Someone talking about this breed! I want one so bad! They're a really underrated breed, but they're so cool and have a lot of history. They're literally the breed that bit Hitler!

Well, you'll always have my heart with a Bouvier. I've been with them since the mid 80's. I groomed them for show and pet grooms too. I whelped litters and hand raised them. You did a beautiful job.

I grew up with Bouviers, and now have one of my very own. She just turned two, and like you said, is still very much a puppy inside! It made me very happy to see you working with Oakley today, and he is such a good, gorgeous boy! I agreed with everything you said about Bouvs in this episode; you know them well!

I am Belgian Flemish and proud owner of our 3e bouvier named Una. She has the hair like a bouvier should have, stiff upper hair and woolly undercoat. (Our previous one didn't so could only be shaved) Grooming every 3 month for about 5 hours work. In Europe it isn't alowed anymore to cut the tail and the ears. A great familydog, brave, very smart but very stubern. Puberty till age of 3 years. ❤

He's gorgeous. Our Boov Frederica would try to herd my boys when they were little. She was such a personality. Once while I was making a quick stop in a market, she jumped out the car window and came in to find me. I was her favorite. :) Miss you Fred.

Bouvieres are the standard police and military dogs in England and France to this day. They were used on battle fields in WWI, thankfully saved by a soldier when they were almost wiped out. They have a bite at 1,000 pounds per square inch and can lock and hold like a.pit bull (without the jaw unhinging). A Rottweiller's bite is just under 400 pounds per square inch, in comparison. Bouviere training includes teaching them to release since you will not be able to pry their mouth open. They are very intelligent, a bit aloof and protective. My 2 year old Bouviere herds his toys and our shoes to one pile in the house almost daily😂

Yes! I squealed when I saw the Bouvier being presented today! I grew up with one and it was the most sweet and good natured dog who wants to knock you down without realizing what it's doing. The memories hit me like it was yesterday! Mine lived to be 13.

I’ve been waiting for you to groom a Bouv! I have had 3, and they are the most wonderful dogs, but truly not for everyone. Be prepared to wipe up and vacuum floors constantly, and pay for frequent grooming. You’ll be rewarded with the best companion. Would love to see you groom one with a fuller coat (not a shoe coat necessarily but not as trimmed down). Your channel is awesome!

Customer came into knit shop where I worked part time, then brought her 4 mo old FlanDoodle in to meet us. Instant love! We got to see him grow up from 45 lbs of puppy to 115 lbs of well behaved, nicely socialized therapy dog (owner had a Standard Poodle who was also a therapy dog.) Rocco is only the second dog I’ve met that I’d love to have one exactly like! The other one was a Siberian Husky, equally well trained.
