The Hyundai Tucson has been around since 2005, and while it’s been a top seller for Hyundai, the design of the first three generations weren't really all that memorable. But that has all changed! The new fourth generation Tucson is larger, more upscale, and most noticeably, has a much more daring design. And for the first time ever, the Tucson is available as a hybrid, promising to return up to 38 miles per gallon.
The Tucson used to be the smallest in the segment, and now it’s among the largest, having grown by about 6” in length, at least for the North American market. That extra size means if you were in the market for a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V hybrid, you might just want to cross shop this funky and angular thing. It’s got bold new styling, but is it any good? Let’s find out!

Great review as always, Ethan. I like the exterior styling a lot.

A. Body shops must 'love' the new body panels, Repair vs. Replacement.... B. I prefer a Stick shift, I don't like buttons for shifting "D" covers all 6 drive gears, C. I like a mechanical Parking Brake. D. I would like the Speedometer on the right, although the Digital in the center is even better. E. I felt cheated regarding the 10.2 Touch Screen "Navigation". The bottom Half is where Buttons and Knobs should be. F. The Drivers Auto set seat scared me the first couple of times starting it. G. It is going to take a bit of time getting used to not hold/using a Real KEY. Push button Start/Shut Down. H. The rear view mirror shaft is much thicker than my Parking placard to hang from. J. Really like the under floor storage in the rear. (First Aid Kit, Tyre Inflation Kit, and I put four collapsable Traffic cones with room to sparre.) K. Smart Parking? When a parking space is available, but too tight to open the doors... Line the Tucson up straight with the space... get out and use the remote to drive in/out of the space. Really weird/scary for me. [Yeah, It has warnings/Stops if a collision might occur. Person or object in the way Stops the car.] L. Plenty of 'tie-down' locations in the cargo area.

Hyundai recently gave me the opportunity to test out their new Tucson Hybrid for a week. So I reviewed it! What do you think of the design? Also a correction: Adaptive Cruise Control is standard on all trims. For those that are looking for videos on my fleet of ‘80s/‘90s cars, more are coming soon. Thanks for the support! :)

I guess they had a box full of creases left over from the new Sonata and Elantra and decided to use them on the Tucson. Another Hybrid is certainly welcome but nobody has yet managed to match Toyota's Hybrid reliability and efficiency.

Retro Cars, Not only for MPG increase, the Pep and Torque is Great too foer the $$$$. Same with the CRV Hybrid. Compared to our 2016 Non Hybrid CRV Touring, my test drive of the CRV Hybrid the other day, Blew the 2016 Away - Torque and HP increase was Immediately apparent - it is a NO Brainer for either car - Hybrid. Hyundai gives you a 10 YEAR Warranty on the powertrain and Hybrid Battery !!! - CRV only 8 Years on the Battery and 5 years / 60K Powertrain... and they just about cost the same .

I went back and forth on how I felt about this exterior but I think I finally settled on liking it. The front grill and lights remind me of the Shadows from Babylon 5. I applaud Hyundai for giving the design a look that differentiates it from its fellow small SUVs. I'm not sure how well it will age but we'll have to wait 5-10 years to find out. I would expect the Hybrid to get better mileage. The interior looks like a nice place to live and is nicely appointed for this segment.

An excellent review 👍 However, not sure how you’ve managed such a poor mpg. We’ve just bought one (Hybrid N Line-S) and already getting 44.5 mpg. Our Ioniq Hybrid wasn’t initially returning great mpg when bought new four years ago but after some time we were getting between 55 and 70+ mpg so expecting a slightly higher return from the Tucson in time 😁

My only real beef with Hyundai right now is their vehicles seem to have no consistent design language. Every generation looks completely different from the previous gen. That said, I have seen this in person and do like it. Hard to beat a RAV4 though if you plan on keeping it awhile.

Hi and greetings from Cumbria in the U.K. great review of a brilliant, well designed vehicle. I shall be ordering the Tucson plug in hybrid 4x4 in Ultimate trim (Limited in the States). There is only one part of the car I don’t like; the rear indicators. Why put them down so low? Surely they are not so visible to other cars following you and are early to break when parking (by other cars that is of course). You mentioned the RAV4 a good few times, I went to view one at the dealership and didn’t even look at one in the end. I asked one question; does the car come with electric front seats? Yes sir the driver’s seat is electric. No, I meant both front seats. No sir, only the drivers. Bye. I shall go elsewhere.

Kudos to Hyundai for taking a chance on non-generic styling. I like it, although I wonder how well it will age. Lack of physical buttons on the dash would be a big negative for me, but I'd guess I fall outside Hyundai's target demographic. Thanks for another well done and presented review.

I had a Saab 9-3 as a company car in 2002 . Great and comfortable , terrific Road manners, HOWEVER, it could not climb just a slight incline in the road with light snow !!! It was terrible. And Hold on to Your Wallet for Repairs and just regular Service !! The Hyundai amd the Honda CRV Hybrids may not be as much Fun To Drive, but with AWD systems standard , they offer better traction in those situations which are aplenty in NY Metro area...

Exterior design is like a warp jump after the previous two generations. They were to blend in. This is to stick out. Could have been interesting to see the design in an actual color, but this black is not baaaad at all :) The only thing is you expect Darth Vader to get out of the car once it stops...

When you were talking about fuel efficiency vs the RAV4 you mentioned that it was only slightly better than the Tucson. But then you say in your experience you were getting only 32mpg with the Hyundai and you actually exceeded the epa estimates with the RAV4. So that critique didn’t make sense. Also it just seemed like your jabs to the Toyota and Honda was encouraged by Hyundai. Almost like a commercial. Anyways I wouldn’t throw down 30+ large on a Hyundai over a Toyota or Honda simply because of long term reliability and resale value, two very Important considerations when average wage-earning consumers are shopping.
@HelloRoad
@HelloRoad 2 жыл бұрын
There's a difference between EPA rated fuel economy and observed economy. EPA ratings are nearly identical. But with my driving loop, with my driving style, I got much better MPG in the RAV4 Hybrid. Observed economy can differ based on a whole host of variables, that's why both are mentioned. Make sense now? And just because I happen to like the Hyundai interior better, you suggest the video is a commercial? Like Hyundai is handing out $$ to small time KZfaqrs 😆 The long term reliability of the Toyota and Honda may be better, but the Tucson Hybrid hasn't been out long enough for anyone to really comment on it.
@sammyjammy6647
@sammyjammy6647 2 жыл бұрын
@@HelloRoad which is why the EPA ratings are a guideline but the real world economy is what really matters. So I understood your video but you should have not kept mentioning there was a slight difference because the epa estimates were not a factor for you. And to be honest that’s a big con. Also in my OPINION you should have told your audience that they should be wary of the 2022 Tucson because it’s a first year model redesign and there could be potential issues and kinks. Also inform them that turbos are not long lasting and should be a a factor in peoples buying decision for long term ownership. One last thing, you really should mention that Hyundai resale is crap if we go by past history. I guess the downside is you might piss off a lot of people for sharing these FACTS.
@HelloRoad
@HelloRoad 2 жыл бұрын
@@sammyjammy6647 The thing is "real world" economy can be widely variable. You may achieve the EPA ratings in the Tucson-it just depends on driving style, traffic, weather, elevation changes, freeway vs city. Some people report far worse mileage in the RAV4 than I was able to obtain. I report on my observed fuel economy (and how I tend to drive) as a data point to consider, but the point literally is "your mileage may vary". I also don't speculate or report on reliability because I do not collect reliability data-there are far better places to research that. Consumer Reports, JD Power, etc. :)

Like Ethan said, it is Ok with the 2.5 < 4 cylinder engine, but handled pretty well. The Hybrid CRV did I did Drive (20121) was Night and Day over the 2016 CRV we have. Much better instant response & Torque with Good Ol' fashion Honda handling. BUT the Graphics / InfoT. system is Head Over Heels on the Tucson vs. the CRV
