A.I. Artificial intelligence, Is it the future of art or its death nail? Also painting from photos, and insights on coaching.
In This Podcast, Stefan Baumann Talks with his Patreon Students about his Upcoming book 'Ultimate Field Guide to Plein Air Painting ' Along with A. I. Artificial intelligence is the death nail to painting and drawing or is it just the new fad that will go by the way like BitCoin?

The paintings of Stefan Baumann reveal the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer to distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed. With the huge success of Baumann’s weekly PBS television series “The Grand View: America’s National Parks through the Eyes of an Artist,” millions of people witness for themselves the magic Stefan portrays on canvas, his passion for nature and the American landscape. By distilling his love of nature into a luminous painting of brilliant, saturated color that transcends conventional landscape and wildlife art, Baumann has captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. Each painting becomes an experience rather than merely a picture - a vivid manifestation of his special and personal union with nature and the outdoor world. Through his mastery of light, color and artful composition, Baumann invites you to experience nature in its purity. It is no wonder that for many years distinguished American collectors, including former presidents and financial icons, have sought out his work.

The people who appreciate art appreciate it because it's made by humans - esp traditional art where real skill is used to create colours etc and art created by hands holds human energy that no digital art and esp AI art can hold

I took up photography and I am an oil painter, and i have to say photography requires equally the training and practice to work with light, temperature and composition etc as painting does. The difference is the colour mixing, brush application and establishing a painterly interpretation of what the artists vision represents. I'm not one of those photographers who edit out natures intention, increase saturation or doctor the scene to appeal to digital viewing, my photography was intentionally created for hanging on a wall to be appreciated. My painting is the same yet the scene is altered to appeal compositionally and to represent my individual interpretation of the scene. I practice both and they are different yet need to same mastering of light and temperature to achieve a work of art. 90% of todays photographers do not treat photography as an art form, they treat it as an advertising medium to appease their own fame and fortunes.

I think as artists we should be the counterculture. Just because something new and trendy is out there doesn't mean we have to embrace it and jump in that wagon or embrace it because it's inevitable that it will take over; that would be surrendering. I think if you really value human creativity, human emotion or the human experience we should stand our ground. But it's different for everyone, some artists are embracing it completely, some are just using it as a tool, some will just ignore it. I personally reject it and will stick to the old school. Old school is the best school.

Thank you for posting this. I appreciate your view and agree completely (so far, i'm half way through the video lol). It's still a pretty scary situation though, at least partially because we're going into the unknown (a camera does not compare to the goliath that AI is). I see many artists are being scared into quitting entirely. It will make it easier for non-artists (or low skilled artists) to make images that mimic high quality work. However, they won't have the skill to really curate or edit the result into something truly amazing. AI doesn't make a prompter into an artist (lets take that idea to an extreme... asking chatgpt to create an engineering schematic of a space shuttle does not make someone an aerospace engineer, and the same applies to art. You are not an artist because you prompt something to make an image for you. You could, however, be an artist that uses AI.). My hope is that the real artists will stand out against the sea of AI art that is coming.

I got my inspiration from Owen Gromme as a Child when I would skip school to go to the Milwaukee Museum. He later when on a group with Robert Bateman whom I also met by accident, in the 70's Gromme gave me some brushes and paint. Both I learned a few tips from. doing out doors. Gromme told me Tansy plant juice, bugs do no like it when doing sketching out doors He also helped me by using clear RED transparent film over words, because it was hard for me to Read, but I did not know I was dyslexic. and he did not use the word. Bateman was the one that game hints also. He also mentioned about the new wave of what is ART , is tossing out all the famous artist learned , by tossing out the Golden Rule and I should not get discouraged, He also told me that there are not many females that paint. Most that do go into cuteness, and I should NOT , lean that way, and stay with my style of Realism. even if I will notice, many Art Galleries will not, a problem he was having. My problem is Time, over the years less art supply stores, now much has gone so in price. When in my mid 20, I had a child. and someone broke in and took all my art supplies, books of sketches with notes about plants and I worked on Flat Canvas when I painted, be I lack space for canvas, When they took items I do not think they knew what they were taking, and probably tossed every thing into trash, because it was not Abstract. I did not have insurance, and no longer could I make money with my art. Guess this is why female artist are so few if they have children. Working a full time job, coming home, getting groceries , and laundry matt. and doing all else. and little money, art takes a side line. I collected enough art materials, but with Acrylic formula changed, but this is what I am stuck with for the moment, because if is what I have, not knowing, but I can use it as an under coat and use Oils over much of my work, guess this is how I will differ from others who paint 100% in oils. Social Security does not pay out much. for art materials. Rent is the main expense., and even I am paying far less than many in the city. I am lucky I am still fairly healthy at 75. Did not intend to write a this long. But do not know any one really as I once did. Today, most are young, more into cellphones, taking selfies, never bother to say "hello" and off in their car.. I read your note, you posted to Stephen, figured you would mind that I added some of my gratitude that more Realism Art is making a come back , and more are using the out doors as their canvas of inspiration. than Tweaking Photos, (some are really good, but noticed many keep the photo EYES untouched of the animals they tweak ) without every using a brush, pencil or pen.

@@tusk242 Thank you for your story! I truly do not believe realistic art using real media (oil, acrylic, etc.) is dead. In fact, I've seen professional artists in game/movie industries choose to get back into oil painting. There's something special about real paint on canvas. As a kid, I always wanted to work in games or movies. I wanted to make my own world. I also wanted to encourage other artists along the way. This is basically what my own youtube channel is all about - learning art, encouraging artists, and creating new worlds. I find as I go through life, I appreciate real media more and more. I recently got back into oil painting, acrylic, watercolor; all the different mediums. Possibly my favorite is pen and ink with watercolor over it. I'm using fountain pens and absolutely love them. I ended up choosing my family over my art, and went a different path for my career. Now I do art on the side and hopefully can grow it into something more. I wish I was able to balance all the demands of life better as a youngster so I could have chosen art sooner. As you said, it's quite challenging to balance everything.

Congratulations on completing your book done, and soon to be out for sale. My book may ( if USA does not go in the wrong direction) wont get out may after I am gone. Still working on it. Finished the Towhee, now am doing a pair of American Kestrel, hope to go up north Sunday to look at some Barns. QUESTION ? Wonder what you think of people who take a Photo, tweak it to look like done in Oil, Acrylic, water color or pastels Not sure if I caught you talk about that in your Pod casts. Glad to see you pop up, I do not know many people, lack Family, Most friends since passed, so thanks needed that pop up from you for inspiration.. Life can get somewhat a downer, the way it is going. Seen a woodcock, in neighbors yard. Got some sketches. OH, thank you, realism coming back, ah hope. I do not get artist block (yet) I get scared, that maybe it is not as good , when a thought pops in I should have done it different, and I am pressed for TIME. Am 75, but heard Dick Van DIke on some TV singing show, and the judges did not know it was him and he is think 92 , or older, and still doing great. So, maybe I can too. Going to volunteer at Police Horse stable, to tend to horses to get out, and exercise. Sitting too long not good.

@@tangents6299 Thankyou, I do not feel old, but so many I knew cancer robbed them. Even my sons father, passed in late 50's, my friends, passed in their 60's , and my last friend just when she was ready be Free, to enjoy life, sold her apartment building, found out she had stage 4 cancer. I will be taking a daily break from sitting , now winter is not as slippery to walk to the Lake . In the city, too many do not shovel their sidewalk. There is a Police Horse Stable near by , and a lot of nature in the back, RAILROAD, and shipping dock, and old buildings still stand empty, too, so I will volunteer there.. THANKS AGAIN. for your response . IT helps to get a" jump" of inspiration, to keep on chugging.

@@tangents6299 So many fiends, passed Art , I finally gathered enough materials restart, but many are not into Realism, Abstract is still in, and others are into spilling acrylic paint on a canvas, and let it swirl. YES, I love the out come I see others create. Other's are tweaking photos, to look as if done in oil, water colors, pastels, without every lifting a paint brush. I will stay fixed on Old school, but do not know if my work is good enough . Robert Bateman thought it was, in the 70"s, Hard to keep going, But then "A I " will win, if WE do not. Right?
