Nice touch, throwing some Kids in the Hall midway through, ha ha, I skipped back and made it a double take. Think I’ll watch that documentary now, I believe this is the second time I hear you mention it, thank you. Lastly, thank you for the content you’ve put out, from hifi gear wisdom (which is what first caught my attention and got me watching your videos) to jazz insights and perhaps most importantly, for opening up the gate to the vinyl community, which I otherwise wouldn’t know existed. Happy New Year!

I realize that this is an older video and I know I watched it a long time ago...it popped up so I am watching again. I first stumbled across you channel 2 years ago when I started getting into jazz. Your channel really helped me as I like hardbop and do not care for free jazz. I decided to start making my own vids (probably half dealing with jazz). I don’t claim Iknow everything about rock but I was ready for something different (hey, I’m getting older!). How refreshing! Getting to know a new genre and finding my favorites (Blakey, Dexter, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Clark, Hank Mobley and the list goes on.) Like you, I try to give some information and convey my enthusiasm for jazz. Just thought I would thank you....

H Paul, Excellent job with this one. The albums that you showed were all top notch and ones that I would suggest to anyone just getting into jazz. I guess I can say that now because a short time ago I was one of those anyone's. I really liked your short blurb on Tower Records too. I had a few friends who managed the Boston and New York stores and at the time it was my go to commercial store. I would have loved to have gone into the Tokyo store like you and Be Bop Bobby Z did. Nice of you to dedicate the video to Bobby. Very enjoyable. You know your jazz my friend~ Rob/Boston

All of the Blimp bootleg shops in Shinjuku. It's sad that Tower (and Virgin) went down in the U.S. I loved those stores when I could make the trip to go in them which was pretty rare. Thanks for watching.

I agree that knowing the history is probably half of the appreciation when trying a new genre. I love learning about the process that created an album - the tracks, and I do read and absorb all of the liner notes. (I was like that with Soundtracks like West Side Story) So thank you very much for a teasing intro for those wishing to dip their toes into jazz. I am now off to watch the docos you have linked. Already bought two of the five albums you've shown, and you are right on the mark for inspiring others into Jazz.

The interviews with Lou Reed about "Shape of Jazz to Come" in the 1959 doc are spot on in my opinion. Early free jazz immediately resonated with me as a fan of rock bands like the Velvets, Television, and Yo La Tengo. For something more recent, I've been recommending the new Kamasi Washington record "The Epic" to people who aren't fully into jazz. His link to hip hop gets people interested and then they are blown away by that album.

Paul, you never cease to amaze me! Your choices are my all time faves too! I own the first reissue of Time Out (still with the six eyes label but Take Five is highlighted on the cover (which means the track became a hit single). It has 2BE on side A and 2CB on side B. I would like to believe it is a recent stamper compared to 1A but it still sounds amazing!
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 7 жыл бұрын
I'll take Take Five anyway I can get it and I would be content with a seventies press if it were my only option. Sometimes a 2BE stampers is not that bad. It all really depends on where it was in it's use. Even a 1A stamper can sound terrible if the stamper was about to break.

Love this video, Paul. Starting getting into jazz right around the time I started up with the VC... I was always a big Swing music fan, as well as lounge, so it wasn't much for me to get into it, but it did take some maturity to lose what you have in your teens and twenties of being not only a rock fan, but ONLY that... Now I listen 40/40/20 - Jazz, Rock, Other.
@BarakaPDub

dixielandfarm You know I am very much in sync with you...including your mix breakdown. I loved Swing, Lounge, and rock but it did take some maturity for me to break away from the classic mold of American youth as well. The other thing that killed it for me was Clear Channel Radio. I got so tired of hearing the same 40 to 50 songs over and over again. I had to put classic rock on the shelf so I wouldn't end up hating it.

Top notch and informative video. There's so much greatness to discover out there but you can't go wrong with any of your picks. I would, however, add Vice Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas as a prime dip your toe in the waters of jazz album. Mingus was crazy no doubt, but so good musically.

Matthew Smith You know you're right, Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown album is excellent and often gets overlooked when it comes to Jazz. My Christmas would not be the same if that wasn't playing in the background and that album is accessible to almost everyone.

I like your channel.. I grew up in the 60s and 70s. .. was a young adult by 80. My parents were big jazz fans..my mom bought a lot of jazz albums thoughout the 50s and 60s. Many are original Blue Notes and Verve.. anyway, we recently discovered they are worth a lot of money. They're in their 90s and were stunned to find that out. LoL. I'm a classic rock guy.. but returned to jazz when I started listening to 2 channel stereo again a few months ago. It seems to be all I listen to lately. Mostly stuff I remember from being a little kid.. stuff my mom cranked up on a Magnevox stereo. I'm streaming through Tidal for the most part. Looking for a turntable to play old jazz albums I have. I like your Rega.. but will likely buy the Fluance RT81. Didn't really know there were so many young people into classic jazz. That's good to see.. especially now that autotune and terrible music prevail. I don't know what happened to music, or where it's going, but exept for folk, modern jazz, and a handful of rock artists, it seems creativity has taken a back seat. Maybe I'm wrong , and there's plenty of music being done that's good.. but it ain't on the radio. I enjoy watching your videos on the old jazz albums. It's fun to see young people talk about these old tunes. They were so common back then, and I'm not sure we realized just how they would stand the test of time. That genre is truly priceless. I'm realizing it now.

Thanks dsonyay. I am trying to dig my way through a backlog of comments at the moment. It's wonderful to hear your parents connected with Bop and Hard Bop at the beginning. I have been picking up those old records but a lot of them are really, really well loved if you know what I mean. My path to Jazz didn't come about until I was in my late 30's as my parents, while maybe having one or two records of Wes Montgomery, never really played it. I agree with you on modern music. There is really good music still being made but it's not what the large music corporations are pushing. While I will buy the occasional modern pop album, its a rarity and I can't really relate or recognize anything that is being played on corporate pop radio. The Fluance RT81 is a good turntable for what it is. I wouldn't be afraid to look at the U-turn Orbit either if you're looking to keep to a specific budget. There are some good automatic models from the 70's and early 80's if you look hard enough.

the title of your video is exactly me. the only "jazz" I've ever owned was Michael Franks - art of tea and Sade's - Diamond life a cousin introduced me to back in the 80s. needless to say I've been curious about jazz ever since. after watching your video I bought Dave Brubeck - time out used vinyl. absolutely fell in love with it. today I went to my local record store and found a used copy of Miles Davis - round about midnight haven't heard it yet haven't made it home I hope it's a good one. thanks for the video.

Thanks Ernest and enjoy the journey. I am glad a couple of the titles were able to resonate with you. Jazz is as varied as rock music and there are sub genres that even I can't get into but this list is filled with my safe bets. 'Round Midnight is an excellent early Miles album.

Thanks Brad, I haven't watched this video in a very long time and I really hate watching myself so I often forget what I did in a given video. Do I reference Ken Burns Jazz? I think I did but I can't recall. That's usually a good primer. Burns does a good job covering the inception of Jazz through the 50's. My only gripe with his series is that he kind of blitzes through the 60's and beyond. I felt he could have done two episodes on the 60's alone. Once I get a feel for the actual personalities of each artist, that really helps me to connect a bit to each. I saw you picked up the Herbie Hancock album in your most recent video and I would have to say, I've been pleased with all of the 80th Anniversary issues I've picked up. Don Was is doing the 80th far better than how he treated the 75th. The Tone Poets have all been wonderful too.
@h2vinyl

I will look into the Tone Poet releases too - I was planning on picking up Cornbread & maybe Byrd's Chant to start...

Great video brother. Every album you mentioned is a jazz classic. My favorite period is also from the 50's to the 70's. One of my very favorite players is Coleman Hawkins who seems to be a little underrated to me. I'm also not a big fan of free jazz. I was wondering if maybe jazz fusion music might be easier for the curious rock fan to listen to at first. At least that's how it was for me. I was, and still am, a huge rock fan, but it was albums like "Bitches Brew" and bands and artists like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever and Herbie Hancock that initially got me interested in jazz music.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 9 жыл бұрын
purplehazed54 Coleman Hawkins is definitely underrated. When it comes to Saxophonist, people tend to think of Parker, Coltrane, and Rollins but it was Hawkins that was their forefather. Your comment on Jazz fusion probably rings true and some of McLaughlin's stuff might be good to break someone in. Fusion is one of those genre's I haven't full delved into yet. Maybe when I take the plunge I'll do a follow up video. Robert Z would probably work it in better from the fusion angle.

One thing to note- and I’m sure you know this- a lot of the original pressings (especially Blue Note), will not have all the low end grunt due to the way RVG mastered the recordings back then. He kind of mastered them to play well on crappy turntables the vast majority of fans used, he kind of took it easy with the low frequency and bump up midrange a bit to compensate. So, when albums like Moanin or Blue Trane are reissued on Music Matters, or Mofi, they’re able to get a much better sound if master tapes are used. I’ve built quite a collection of Jazz these days and I think you picked out great starter albums for classic rock fans. I might add Giant Steps, The Rumproller, Brubeck’s Live at Carnegie Hall, and maybe Milestones (Davis).
@BarakaPDub

Michel Camilo is very talented and I very much enjoy his piano work. Like a lot of modern Jazz artists today, it is so difficult for them to make their presence felt like those artists that made it big at the height of the Jazz era which is really sad. I am your target audience. I am 65, have a reasonably good stereo (vintage and modern components), and lost more rock albums to divorce and hurricanes than I care to remember. I recently got back into vinyl, buying several hundred rock albums over a 6 month period. I wanted more. You can only listen to the same album so many times. Sometimes, it’s a LOT of times, but it has its limits. My wife suggested that we get some jazz albums. We have gotten a couple of dozen so far, many by the artists that you name in this video if not the exact album. My favorite artist that we have “discovered” so far is Art Pepper. I discovered him thru Harry Bosch books, the jazz loving L.A. detective. Why no love for Art? I have never seen him mentioned on your or any other jazz related KZfaq video.

Thanks John. I hear you on the Rock. While I love Classic Rock, I found out I was getting fatigued with it. Predominately because of the corporate radio stations that play the same songs over and over again. Rather than kill what's good, I decided to put a lot of the stuff on moratorium and I all but stopped listening to terrestrial radio. I don't kill a good thing and I only dig the albums out when the mood strikes me. There's a lot of other good music out there to discover. Art Pepper...he cut some really, really good records and you know I don't think I've ever featured him before. Plus Eleven and Meets the Rhythm Section are two of the best recordings and should be in any top 100 for Jazz.

I'm new to this Jazz music and enjoy this episode. As beginner, should I get Music Matter pressing vinyl or analogue production vinyl? Or do just stick with whatever label. For example, John Coltrane (Blue Train). Just got that album from Music Matter, I paid for over $70...what's your advise? Just focus on music? or both music and label? Thanks
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 4 жыл бұрын
My recommendation is really to make sure you like the music first and foremost, regardless of pressing. Music Matters and Tone Poet are the best out there on terms of quality but with Music Matters titles going out of print, the prices are escalating. Analogue Productions, through Acoustic Sounds, is have a 50% off sale as I type this. They have 45 rpm Blue Note editions mastered by Kevin Gray. The one thing I don't like about the Analogue Production Blue Note issues is that the jackets are cheap card stock. The music is great though! The new Blue Note 80th Anniversary Issues are well pressed and mastered. They targeted for a decent price point. Personally, I wouldn't want to spend an excess amount of dollars on music you may not enjoy. Not all Jazz music clicks with me so I try and sample it before I buy. The one nice thing about Music Matters titles is that you can easily recoup any lost costs if you didn't like the music. Hope this helps.

well now there then. just one of the expressions from my youth (yob-1944). i lived through the introduction of rock n roll and later the melding of jazz with it. also, when playboy emerged from Esquire magazine and the advent of Mad Magazine (though i wasn't aware of it until the late fifties). Hugh Hefner asked for a raise at esquire but was denied; blue suede shoes was first released by Carl Perkins, then Elvis, both versions were close in execution and sold well. all genres of music came to us on essentially the same station so i heard Benny Goodman, Khachaturian (sabre dance), Patty Paige, Elvis, Vaughn Monroe, and everything else in the late 40s to the 60s. it seems like things began to slowly branch into separate entities like rock, conventional music (Frank Sinatra etc) and others. now the stations can be as specific as sub-genres with narrow foci. i was jazz-oriented because my father was a jazz musician and my mother's favorite tune was Boogie Woogie by Benny Goodman. the earliest jazz that i remember being hooked on was Ahmad Jamal's Poinciana which had the admiration of Miles Davis as i found out much later. Ahmad is STILL going to our benefit. one of the first marriages of jazz and rock that more or less begat fusion was Miles' Bitches Brew within which was the seeds of the group Weather Report which ended up being one of my very favored groups. i unfortunately never got to see them live nor Miles Davis and many others. i did, however, get to see greats like Ahmad, Bob Dorough, and oscar brown jr. at the Jazz Bakery in LA which is a fantastic city to live in for music. one of my influences has been ben sidran who was in on the beginnings of the steve miller band. he is a jazz historian and proponent that has an infectious appeal. chick him out. also, Eddie Harris grabbed me by the ears as one of my roommates in the USAF when i was in Guam and even before with first. Exodus To Jazz based on the movie theme Exodus. in Guam, it was The Electrifying Eddie Harris album containing Listen Here and There In Search of a Movie that had my attention. in my 8th grade period, there was jimmy smith with Kenny Burrell on Midnight Special that spoke to me via a visionary DJ on one of the rock stations in Buffalo NY. all the while i was listening to Duane Eddy and Link Wray (think Rumble). the sound of guitar went right to my bones so any dominant guitar grabbed me. you speak of compilations which can be a gateway to diverse avenues within any genre, i generally don"t buy them but for the ones put out by labels such as Concord or GRP that are well organized and presented. i think i have rambled on enough for now. ....hifitommy

You know, I yearn for the days when radio was like that. Of course, I'm a bit young to have had the same experience but I miss the times when the music outlets were more concentrated and the quality of the music product was high. With so many sources of music these days, I feel like things have degraded a bit. It's not to say good music isn't being made today. I just think it's not on par with the quality that was being produced starting in the 50's up until the 90's. To have an experience where you had such a variety of music being played must have been something. It's also forced exposure. Today it's too easy to jump to the next thing if the intro chords don't get you. Anymore, I try and force myself to listen things to completion. For me, truly discovering Jazz was a happy accident and I'm glad I had it. My biggest disappointment was that I discovered it way to late to see some of the greats. Is Ahmad still playing? Thanks for the great comment Tommy.

***** The newbury comics exclusives 8 times out of 10 sound perfectly fine. Usually not all the time but usually theyre 180 gram. They usually have a pretty cool color scheme on them as well as being limited edition. Which is sometimes fun. Like the kind of blue is on blue marble vinyl limited to 1500. I know theyre isn't too many left when I asked the guys at my newbury comics. Theyre usually not too much more expensive either from the regular non numbered versions. Maybe 5 bucks more at most. I mean I guess you could get a bad one here and there but from my experience so far newbury comics exclusive pressings are no problem.

Hi Paul, interesting video.I think it's very hard to introduce jazz to someone, since there are so many different styles within the jazz genre so i try to figure out if the person are familiar to dixieland, bigband, swing, bop, cool jazz, hard bop och more modern stuff. I'm not that much in to Coletrane and Miles Davis newer music so i think it's easier to know what expectations the other person have when it comes to the word jazz. However shopping jazzrecords in second hand is a very fun sport and hunt for that little extra that seperates a really interesting album from the mainstream lowbudget compilations that is in every fleamarket.

JörgenS Sometimes it can be very difficult to build that music appreciation if folks don't even want to try it. Sometimes it can be an initial bad experience that triggers the turn off on something. I agree with your sentiment on Coltrane and Davis' newer music. When it goes to far on the Avant-Garde or Free Jazz side of things, it tends to lose me. Mentally, I am looking for a hook or some structure for my brain to latch on to. Hunting for Jazz records is a fun sport for sure. Thanks for watching!

Awesome Paul, I appreciate the recommendation! I saw Chad recently put out MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS, but I didn’t listen after disappointment with AH UM (there’s so much music to listen to that I love!), but I definitely will now. As for ALS, it’s absolutely one of those rare lightening strikes in the studio. I generally avoid sax (not sure why, just never loved its saccharin effect), but Coltrane is doing something else altogether on ALS. It’s obviously an amazing record. Glad I picked it up from AS at a decent price in Switzerland. Btw, your comparison on ALS definitely helped me decide to pull that trigger. Thanks for the great videos and discussion.

Listening to MINGUS… and I can see why he was a jazz bass legend. Irreverent, funky and original. The problem for me is I hear the arrangements as cliche movie jazz on the love/sex scene. Like NAKED GUN satire. What CM did in ‘64 sounds a bit contrived to me in ‘21 and I have trouble unhearing it, even though he’s not at all to blame for that frame and it’s my shortcoming, certainly not Charles’. Definitely some dramatic bass moments on the album, which I love, but I think CM’s band isn’t for me. I’ll finish the album though, giving it it’s obvious due. Thanks again!

I also think credit should be given to the LP format which now allowed jazz artists more time to express themselves, not rushed or restricted to the width of a 78 (3 minutes) or even the radio DJ's 45 (7") playing time limit, and so you get slower, relaxed improvisations leaning towards Blues, and lasting over 10 minutes if need be. This also added to the Jazz exposure of 1950s.

Very good comment and you're absolutely right about the 78 rpm comment. I don't think hard bop would have evolved to what it was if it wasn't for the LP. It also gave some of the legends (i.e. Duke Ellington) the opportunity to expand on some of their original compositions.

@@BarakaPDub for most rock people though, that's the gateway. It's not all about you. LOL

Bitches Brew is great, but I think a more accessible fusion option than bitches brew for people new to jazz is In A Silent Way. I had to “graduate” to BB after my ear was “trained” a bit. But I was teenager when I dove in. Maybe a person older who’s heard more music will more easily grasp it.

@@Lara-dp8gk if it was people coming from easy listening music to jazz, A Silent Way makes sense. And I'd agree with you but people coming from rock music to jazz makes Bitches Brew a more natural progression.

@@davidthom7127 well, luckily both exist. I should have just said that I needed the intermediate step & others might too. His list is close to an exact match of my experiences diving into my parent’s album collection. After years of listening to the Stones, Zeppelin, etc, I pulled out their jazz albums, including bitches brew and I wasn’t ready for a lot of it. Kind of Blue pulled me in to Miles where I spent a year actively listening daily. I needed In a Silent Way before I could get into Bitches Brew. It’s my anecdotal experience. You were able to skip ahead but others might need the added step.

Maybe it’s just me, but those kinda records are a turn-off and a wrong angle to a rock listener. U want something heavy. Maybe Soft Machine’s Third, Miles Davis’ Agharta (holy shit) or something mystic like Alice Coltrane’s Journey In Satchidananda. Yea it’s not ’real jazz’ but it’s fun to listen to unlike dudes in suits being serious

Yeah. It has it's flaws for sure but as an intro to someone not experienced with Jazz at all, I can't offer up a better substitute. I wish there was a little more devotion to everything going on past 1960.
Is "Kind of Blue" Miles Davis' greatest record?
