A cycling journey through Sweden - Solo bikepacking from South to North

I apologize for the miserable sound. I realized the problems with the sound when I had already deleted some of the videos I used for this project. So it’s too late to fix it now.
In May 2020 I left for a long and lonely journey across nearly the entire length of Sweden. I started in the southern Swedish county of Kalmar Län and had a clear goal in mind: Kebnekaise, the highest Peak of Sweden, which at the same time is not very far from Sweden’s northernmost reaches. And that was the only plan.
So this is what happened. 5 weeks and 2000km of cycling, beautiful weather, cold swims, midnight sun, friendly encounters with fellow humans and wildlife and lots of time to just be.
This video serves mainly as a sort of remembrance or diary for me, so I apologize if it’s sort of slow or uninteresting for you at times :)

I’m really glad to hear that it was inspiring for you! Even if sometimes it can be very difficult to travel far in the world, there is always so much more to discover in our “backyards”. I just finished a cycling trip in bavaria where I discovered many beautiful landscapes that were entirely new to me, “although” it was all in my home country. 1 more question: apparently it is possible to take your bike on the train in Sweden? I was under the impression it isn't possible.

Hey Thomas, thanks for the feedback! I don’t have a good map of my route but I can list some points here: I started in Kalmar Län and cycled through Vimmerby, Norrköping, Eskilstuna, Falun, Sveg, Östersund, Strömsund, then across the famous and beautiful Vildmarksvägen, Sorsele, Arvidsjaur, Jokkmokk, Kiruna and then to the Kebnekaise Mountain. I mostly followed google maps which led me on many gravel roads. Roughly 2000km in the end. For the train: you’re right, it’s not possible to take a bicycle on the train in Sweden just like that (they should probably change that) so I had to put it in a giant cardboard box that I got at a bicycle store in Kiruna. That is allowed. Have a nice day :)

Hey Ilya, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I didn’t exactly record the route (except in my mind ;) ) but I have a list of some of the towns I passed through in the correct order. I mainly improvised the route while cycling, the only thing I specifically wanted to do was ride the mountain road between Gäddede and Saxnäs which I highly recommend. Anyways, here’s the list: Högsby, Vimmerby, Linköping, Norrköping, Katrineholm, Eskilstuna, Falun, Furudal, Älvros, Östersund, Strömsund, Gäddede, Stora Blåsjön, Klimpfjäll, Saxnäs, Dikanäs, Slussfors, Sorsele, Arvidsjaur, Jokkmokk, Gällivare, Kiruna, Nikkaluokta, Kiruna

what train takes bikes that far north. inlandsbanen?

As far as I know, no intercity trains in Sweden take bicycles. However, you can bring large luggage. So if you put your bicycle in a box or a bag, it's no problem to bring it on the train. I got a cardboard box for transporting bicycles at a bicycle shop in Kiruna. That way I was able to bring it back home on the train after I cycled all the way north.

Cool video man! How were you able to take the bicycle in the train in Kiruna? I only cycled through the south of Sweden because it's not allowed to take the bicycle in most of the train lines. So I am curious how you did that?

Thank you!! I put my bicycle in a cardboard box that I got for free at a bicycle store in Kiruna. They will let you take this big box on the train. But they should definitely create an easier option to transport bicycles on trains in Sweden... Enjoy your day!

weather up there is quite unpredictable, could be 20 degrees all the way but if you're unlucky it could be 10 degrees and rain the entire time. I think september generally is alright to do it though. You can always take the train home if it gets too bad :)
