I have been plowing a gravel driveway for along time now and I have learned not to grade it for a good month before winter to help keep the gravel packed down. If you grade to late in the year, it will be too loose once you have to start plowing snow. I also like to pack the first few snows that stick around so you can't see the gravel at all. To do that, you can just keep ordering more parts from Good Works Tractor so you have more delivery trucks packing it for you!!

I have a small snow removal business up in the Laurentians in Quebec, Canada…. I’ve found that back blading with the bucket for the first few snowfalls compacts the snow and helps for that initial “crust” to form before blowing/pushing/scraping any snow off of the gravel driveways that I clear. Having said that, you need to make sure that there is no rain/freezing rain in the forecast which could turn the driveway into an absolute skating rink, eh?!?!?!😊. Great content! I use edge tamers and put my bucket in float. It works and doesn’t mess up my gravel driveway.

I have been plowing my gravel driveway for a few years now and dont have to move gravel back in the spring. I let a 2-4in snow pack build up then plow/blow as normal. My rule of thumb is I never want to see the driveway until spring. Cant move the gravel if you cant see it.

I’ve been doing the same thing for years. The only time I get any gravel in my yard is when the county plows the road in front of my place. Not much I can do about that.

A tip I found when using a 3-point blade on a gravel driveway was to use horse stall mats. Cut the mat into strips 12 inches wide and replace the steel cutting blade with the mat strips. The mat will glide over the gravel while removing the snow

Nice tips! We really like our hydraulic angle front snow plow on the John Deere 2210. It's nice to have a plow in front of the tractor, and the ability to angle it to the side.

We don't get near as much snow as you do, but we can get occasional big ones. I've found turning the rear blade backwards is a great way to avoid damage to the surface and it removes the snow fine. Great video as always!

Used my landscape rake to plow snow on my long gravel driveway yesterday in WA state. I prefer to use it to preserve the gravel in place and it it does not create a smooth surface that will become a skating rink. It will break up drifts and move some snow to the side. I think of it more as grooming the snow with a textured surface that you can drive and walk on. I have a plow on my truck and a bucket and box blade on my 5 series JD for moving larger quantities of snow but for lighter snows and finishing, I prefer the landscape rake.

A 1" thick rubber plow edge has helped me significantly. You won't get the driveway perfectly bare, but you also won't spend all spring moving the rocks back onto your driveway. It also helps once the ground has a solid freeze.

Great video very informative, at my house I used 2x4 scraps that I cut 45 degree angles on the ends and through bolted with carriage bolts to the bottom of the skids on my snow pusher. Works well. I had wondered about my landscape rake, might try that

I have just used my bucket for years now. I have a lot of gravel driveway. The best thing I do is make my snow pile on an unused part of the driveway, not off the driveway. That way the stones you pickup just fall onto the drive when the snow melts. I know some driveways are long and narrow with no place to pile snow except to push it off the drive but if you can pile it on the driveway.

Great video as always!! From central Iowa and I use both a Snow Pusher and rear blade for my gravel driveway using a Sub Compact. I actually prefer the rear blade for most smaller snow falls (6" and under). I have found that rear blade to work fantastic, even when the driveway is not yet frozen or "Crusted". However, you need to keep the top link very short so the cutting edge of the rear blade is more Perpendicular to the gravel and then it does not tend to cut into the gravel and pick it up.

Great video Courtney! I think that the PSI on the skid runners is often overlooked. If your snow pusher box or whatever weighs 400 lbs (plus the weight of the end of the loader boom itself) and your two skid runners are 2" x 15" there is a lot of downward force on them which will easily push them down in the soft ground or driveway. There isn't an easy or surefire solution that I have seen, some gravel will get disturbed no matter what.

I have been using a rear blade for my gravel drive way an yard for a year or better now. Turning it around an using it backwards made a huge difference. Works really good.

Another vote for the Edge Tamers. I also use a grader blade backwards. I pile the snow in an unused part of my drive to help keep the gravel out of the yard. Nothing is perfect however.

I put a piece of 2" pvc on the plow for my side and worked perfectly almost no gravel at all came up.

Use your car or truck tires to pack down a fresh snow on your gravel driveway before plowing or snow blowing. I run up and down my 1200 foot gravel driveway 5 or 6 times, helps give a you base. My 1025r with loaded turf tires work fine for traction with front 2 stage snow blower. Use your hidden float function with a front end snow blower. You’re right freeze and thaw cycles seem more frequent, be more careful with a thawed gravel driveway and be prepared to adjust shoes. Getting gravel out of your lawn in the spring, sucks. Get some Yak-Trax for your boots if you plan on walking on your driveway, it will eventually be a sheet of ice. Salt doesn’t work on a gravel driveway. Excellent tip video.

Haha, I just learned these lessons through trial and error with my first snowfall. I ended up basically just back dragging everything with my snowblower box. I have dogs so I pack down everything around my house and work areas between garages and parking spots for trailers. It definitely takes more time, but it helps give gravel that pack down if you are further north where it will actually freeze. After I got tired of backing up so much, I noticed my rear blade sitting there in smoot mode still. Picked that up and used that for my main drive and took it all the way down the trail to the back of my property to do my full loop. Having that nice frozen path to walk on back there with the girlfriend and dogs is so nice. I picked up a 60" trip blade to go with my snowlwer, and plan to use my bucket with skids on the FEL if I end up having big enough piles to deal with them.

have been using frontend loader bucket with two edge tamers, they do a great job. They leave a little snow, but do not remove much gravel, which I simple spread back on the driveway. Tried a plow on my ATV, it piled up a lot of gravel on the driveway edges.

Here in Oklahoma we don’t get many snow events that require removal, but when we do, an angled rear blade with skid shoes (to keep you from gouging) and a side on the leading edge (it keeps you from having spillage) works great.

Instead of skids on a snowblower that tend to dig in and stir up the gravel , I rigged a set of solid wheels on 1/2" bolts for axles using the skid plate holes. You can vary the height by just changing to different size wheels and it worked great for me for years as long as gravel drive is pretty level to start.

Oh crazy, I was even just thinking about a landscape rake for light trail grooming! (Hadn't got to the end of your video, haha) I am wanting a 4' one for cleaning up brush and piles of who knows what back in my woods anyways and it got me thinking it might leave decent corderoy and pack down the snow just enough to walk on without looking like you actually plowed it.

I flipped the rubber cutting edge on my CRI snow pusher until I got the frozen layer on the driveway, but this is my first year with the snow pusher. it seemed to work pretty well.

I only have 100 feet of gravel drive so the snow removal is somewhat more simple. Step one is to compact a good snow base. Step two is use the skid plates to keep the cutting edge up off the gravel. Then for the riding mover with front mounted blower I use suitcase weights, wheel weights and chains. So far, so good.

This is my first years plowing a gravel driveway at my new house. I’ve got a ck2610 with just a front bucket and 600 ft of driveway. Won’t lie a tad nervous bout screwing it all up. Next year hoping to pave it

I've used my landscape rake for 2 years now on the new farm and it works great. I have edgetamers on my bucket for the main snow removal and I use the rake, on an offset angle, to break up ice and direct any loose snow off to the right side. With the up and down temps, the ice buildup on the sloped areas is hazardous at times. The rake helps to break or rough that up enough to drive on but doesn't rip it up with gravel like a heavier piece of equipment would do.

I like that the rake leaves some snow and ice chunks behind - aids in the traction for the cars and trucks on the driveway. I'm thinking of adding some metal, or half of a corrugated pipe to the inside of the rake tines so it can move some of the deeper snow we get here in western NY, but leave about 2" of the tines exposed to rough up the surface.

@Pete Hall I didn't have gauge wheels the first year but added them the next summer and used them that 2nd winter. I didn't notice much difference, but the added weight did make the rake dig a bit deeper. Not sure I like that or not. We'll see how this winter goes with them.

We've had a pretty warm winter in Central WA so far so we attached our landscape rake and use a plow on the front of our tractor when clearing snow from our gravel driveway. I can plow if the snow is deeper and the rake keeps the snow from getting too slick overnight and it helps it melt when temps go into the upper 30's.

I use a John Deere GT245 with a snow blower & Curtis Cab for my 250' long driveway. I removed the "skids" from the outboard edge of the snow blower, and installed 5" diameter wheels from a mower deck. This elevates the scraper bar so it doesn't drag on the gravel.

I put a piece of rubber horse mat between the moldboard and cutting edge hanging down a couple inches on my back blade and a 2" round steel pipe over the cutting edge of my front plow.

I have a gravel drive so I bought a 10' 1-1/4" black pipe. Cut it in half to use on the rear blade and FL. I cut a 3/4" slot down the length of both pipes to slip over the the rear blade edge and the other over the edge on the FL bucket. I drilled a hole and welded 1/4" x 2 flat bar to the back side of the pipe and used the bolts on the blade to secure it. The pipe on the FL was secured by a piece of flat stock welded vertically on each end and bolted to the side of the bucket. I used flat washers as spacers between the bucket sides and the flat bar as it will not lay flush at the bottom of the bucket due to factory weldments. Will find out if this $40.00 mod is going to work on either end.

If you roll your front bucket under (back toward tractor as far as it will go) the side will act as runners and the blade of the bucket (at least on mine) will be up off ground 11/2-2" also good for spreading soil, gravel etc.

I have 1025R and I use a rear blade to remove the snow in my driveway. I found it easier to drive backwards to shove the snow it is a inconvenience but it doesn't tear up my gravel driveway as a bad.

I always make a few passes with my rear blade backwards and then after it freezes up I drop the skid shoes and continue normally, this is in northern Saskatchewan so once it freezes stays that way

what we do in family and have done as long as i have remembered winters we just pack in the first snow and then just plow right over the next time and thats it just pack down the first snow and then just plow the rest that falls also having a really hard pack drive helps too and that way it isnt such a muddy mess either when theres alot of rain thats how we do it and i personally use a old 2wd ustility size tractor with a home made bucket on a triangle quick hitch and thats it and actually most times just use shovels because the tractor is vey loud starting the whole neighbouhood can hear it and i dont have them near even but yeah it works good enough

I have used a 3-point blade in the past on gravel. I found that I did not have very good control with the blade reversed.

Dragging a rear blade works great for not destroying an early or late season gravel driveway.

I wonder with the rake if you added some sort of wire mesh to ensure it captures snow. Otherwise I would only imagine the rake catching heavy wet snow

The problem I have with leaving just a bit of snow is it tends to melt in the sun then freeze into a sheet of ice. Fortunately I have a pretty small area to deal with.

PVC on the corners of the bucket blade or the entire blade works fine. Also you can put PVC on the plowing implement

I agree totally! Cut a slit in 3 inch pvc pipe and put it over the cutting edge of the back blade and it works great for removing snow on gravel!

IMO whether or not the ground is frozen makes a big difference. You can be a lot more aggressive with the rear blade when the ground is hard frozen.

I roll my plow blade top forward forward until the ground freezes. It doesn’t dig in as hard.

Be careful with that rear blade!! Don't dig into the gravel, it will cut into gravel, try not to turn the blade 180, just push backwards... think as you go..... try it on the Summit tractor... 🙂🙏👍

I heard going backwards can damage your rear mounts. Something about them being setup for pulling, not pushing. Just do 180 on a rear blade if you need to move snow. I’ve done it without any problems.

Don’t plow ground that isn’t frozen completely. Or, let the snow pack a few inches and never clear down to gravel all winter. It does make a mess come spring thaw but it doesn’t waste material.

Stuff like this reminds me why my parents had the driveway at their cabin paved a few years ago and my house and office/warehouse have a mix of asphalt and heated concrete. Life is too short to waste time constantly dealing with gravel when there are more productive/fun projects you could be doing with your tractor.

Courtney, whatever happened to the redneck solution of using a round pipe covering the leading edge of the blade to reduce ground friction and tearing up the soil/gravel. Simple installs usually.

works great. I used a 4 inch steel fence post had laying around. Also I have another plow set up the normal way.
