@EastSide-qc5oy
@EastSide-qc5oy Жыл бұрын
Her role was fairly significant actually, especially considering the main focus was always meant to be the relationship between the two main characters who were sisters, and the fact that it was an ensemble cast where quite a few characters needed to have representation. It is a sports team, after all. I think the role was expanded a bit once she was cast and Penny Marshall saw the chemistry between Madonna and Rosie.

Madonna wasn’t bad in this, but if there’s one character you could cut out and not miss much, it’s hers. She’s literally in the film for box office. The rest of the cast are good in their roles and are virtually indispensable. There was a period of about 5 years in the late 80s early 90s when B movies ruled and was inspired. Sometime in the late 90s, CG took over and writing died.

I don’t think there was a “main” draw. There were a lot of draws. It was an ensemble film. Madonna being cast generated a ton of publicity for the film that started long before it was even released, and she was definitely a draw, but Geena Davis and Tom Hanks were major box office stars and Penny Marshall was already a celebrated director. Rosie certainly didn’t hurt as an up-and-coming talent previously known mostly for stand-up comedy and VH1. The ability to quickly pick up specific baseball techniques during intense training really wasn’t about “acting.”

I'm tired of social media like wiki and youtube referring to any movie over 20 years old as either a classic or cult classic. Yes, I sure like this movie and it made a unique niche for itself in many ways but time will still tell if it's a classic.
@EastSide-qc5oy
@EastSide-qc5oy Жыл бұрын
I get where you’re coming from, but in the case of this movie I think it’s pretty accurate. Considering how successful it was upon release and how popular it still is, and how the film introduced to a then-modern public a story from history that featured mostly women in a male-dominated field, “classic” probably is deserved. Also there’s such a thing as a “modern classic” which means it’s a more recent release and not as old as the average age of a film you might see on Turner Classic Movies.
