ngl this is insane. not only it performs like crazy and at a great price, even lower than the competition, but it looks so good and well built, my money is on scythe from here on out, gj guys

I had the Ninja 5, Mugen 5 PCGH (is it a Rev. B Special version?) and Arctic 34 Duo. Best value is the Mugen. Aid take it in the black version but it's the same as the silver version and you can spray that black easy for 2$. Seems fuma is mostly a mugen 5 or more a nh-d15

Thanks Mike for another excellent review from with the kind of clear and concise data that attracted me to Hardware Canucks many years ago. Your previous reviews helped me choose a cooler for my new 5600x system. In the meantime I came across an Arctic Cooling Freeezer 64 Pro that hasn't been used in ages. A little research suggests that the mounting latch would fit default AM4 retention brackets. "For science" I may sometime give her a new fan and see what she does :)

Funny story: I just got this cooler a few days ago and was SUPER disappointed with the thermals at first! I replaced my NH-D15 with it and spent about an hour adjusting fan curves, tried replacing the fan, and was just about to request return when I realized I had somehow neglected to remove the protective plastic film from the plate at the bottom of the cooler! One reinstall later and I was very pleased. Super cool, quiet, and looks real nice 🥳

@@Orion-redx7 They both are great coolers! I think the NH-D15 has a slight performance advantage. But they are both super overkill for my 65w i7 8700 and I like the appearance of the Mugen more. I’m very pleased after switching to the Mugen, and the nicer appearance and smaller size are worth the 1-2 degree higher temps at load. I’m sitting at about 65c at load with the Mugen whereas the NH-D15 sat at 63-64c.

While I myself have a Scythe fuma in my system, I think there are a few other companies out there that one could look at: Noctua, BeQuiet, Alpenföhn ,... Noctua does lack in the "budget oriented" bracket, if you buy a halfway decent cooler you can carry it through several systems.

I have Mugen 5 rev B on my 10850K. I use PL1 (long term power) of 145 W. It is fantastic. Scythe has one of the best price-performance coolers. Also i use this screwdriver for all of my computer builds, it is magnetic and long enough for everything.

I have the Mugen 5 Rev B on my R7 3700X, son has it on his R9 5900X. Extremely quiet, keep them both well within AMD specs for CPU temps. Very, very good cooler and the Black edition is improved. Very well done.

Hell yeah, I passed my Fuma to my wifes system but every time I look over I want to steal it back, such an absolute beast and now that I'm rebuilding my computer I might have to pick this up Scythe coolers are the BEST bang for your buck no questions asked. And I still use the screwdriver they supplied for my Fuma it's a awesome touch and greatly appreciated. Great Video!

I got the Mugen 5 PCGH. It's like a rev. B with 2 fans. I sprayed it black and looks like dual can black edition. Got it for 40$. Cools like crazy at 0 noise.

was about to say the same, i'd love to see that. even if you just add another scythe fan to it (i think it even comes with extra clips), because when you equip it with like noctua or phanteks fans, it gets kinda pricey if you dont have those fans lying around

I have a scythe mugen 5 argb plus, its pretty good and the rgb is nice too. The screwdriver was a really nice touch. I was wondering why the top bit was so short but it made so much more sense when installing the cooler.

I have a Mugen 5 Rev. B that I got a couple of years ago to test/run my system until I had my custom loop set up, definitely one of the best bang for the buck coolers... now if only the black edition existed back then!

Hi, excellent video. Have subbed because of the quality of your delivery. I’m trying to piece together a build for my son. I’ve got him an MSI z590 gaming plus motherboard. It’s heat sink vrm area is quite raised. Would the Fuma 2 fit? If not, would the Mugen fit? The Fuma 2 rev B is my preference. Many thanks for any help you can provide.

you should have tested the black cooler with the rev. b fan, to see how the black coating affects temperatures. you should have also tested both coolers with a noctua nf-a12 fan.

The Cryorig R1 Ultimate also can be installed just as the Mugen 5 with a screwdriver included in the box. Please review the Cryorig and compare it with the Noctua NH-D15.

Glad I went with the Mugen Black Edition when I built my new sff pc. Only really went chose it since it was one of the few tower coolers that fit in the NR200P with the glass side panel...that plus the aesthetics.

Had a mugen 2 for years on my i7860. Bought some other brand for my ryzen 2600, can't even remember what brand. Hated that thing from the start. I think the mugen 4 were out of stock everywhere then. No possibilities for a second fan on the fives?

I bought this cooler for the Ryzen 7800x3d, but I switched the fan to 2 of the Scythe Grand Tornados, that spin up to 3000 RPM! I don't expect much warmth... :D

We haven't started AIO cooler reviews yet. The first thing we need to do is build a small anechoic chamber at the office since I think our noise floor at 35.8dB is a bit too high.

i love my mugen5 revb, it's decent with it stock config so easy to mount, stock 1200rpm fans is tuned for low dba though i tested swapping scythe fan with my spare arctic p12 pwm, omg the max temp actually drop by 6 to 10c its heatsink is really well design :)

I guess I've been at it too long. I recall when Thermalright did this with their larger Macho coolers. Actually the Macho Rev C does include one and it's cheaper than the Scythe. Would love to see a comparison to the Thermalright, as a LOT of the ideas current coolers are using were things they did years ago.

I've gone through several mugen 5 black reviews and I've noticed that opinions are mixed. One thing is for sure though, the fuma 2 is always slightly better at cooling. which is why I bought the Mugen 5 Black 😁. I've yet to install it on my ITX build (using a lian li tu150) but the blacked out cooler fits my build theme perfectly. Your review made me decide to go with it. I also bought the new Wonder Snail 120 black to put on the Mugen 5 Black (waiting to hear how loud it will be), and use the Kaze Flex 120 Black as a case fan. I've had good experience with Kaze Flex fans, even though some reviewers say there's an annoying hum at certain rpm levels (don't even know if the Kaze Flex White I bought is legit because it spins up to 1800 rpm and I haven't found it on any of the Scythe websites I searched). Being a 5700 xt reference card user, I don't think any other cooling fan would come close to the whine it does at 80% fan speed. 😁

I have the Scythe Mugen and it's INCREDIBLE. I don't mind the non-black at all. It's so aesthetically pleasing and keeps my CPU so cool. Best non-required PC part I have ever bought.

engineers implement solutions, and its the managers that typically steer which solutions are prioritized. in other words, engineers didn't decide to "slap RGB on everything," it was probably the marketing and management teams...

dude, when looking at a few degrees difference, I'll take Scythe any day of the week. Great price, cool design, functionality is awesome... I mean it looks sick. I have the Fuma 2 in my Nr200p and man, Its amazing. I'm glad to see they are continuing to move in the right direction. Too often companies hit a peak (no pun intended) and products just get pushed out to keep sales up. That doesn't seem to be the case here Great review as always.

I know, but they have replaced it with a Rev C and even that one is hard to find as ThermalRight went the RGB nonsens and more look like cheap assed coolers.

Great video guys! Love the Scythe coolers, especially the new refined ones. I have a question! I recently had a house relocation situation where during transport and disassembly my cross retention bracket of the cooler got lost. now I am left without a PC and cannot find it or anywhere to buy it. Can anyone help me? Ps: i live in Germany :)

Scythe should use a higher speed fan. They do make separate Scythe Kaze fans at 1800 and 2000 rpm. Good cooler and review 👍

As far as we the current schemes may believe as correct, it seems there is no difference between the AM4 & AM5 socket when it comes to cooler mounts.

Can I use this bad boy with AMD Ryzen 5900X? ( I don't like the liquid coolers) Any idea what the TDP value of this cooler is? For example, the TDP value of BeQuite! Dark Rock 4 is 200. I couldn't find info for Scythe Mugen 5 Black Edition. Very good review by the way. Good job.

i think the 5900x is a bit to much for the mugen 5. i would go for a big noctua instead. make sure you got a good airflow case, with a meshed front.

Hey guys. Please, does anyone know how this particular cooler fits with Corsair Dominator RAM in all 4 ram slots? I think in previous review of the Fuma it came in touch with the one on the far left. Does Mugen 5 have enough clearance not to mess with that pariculat RAM ? Already appreciate your answers.

KAZE is pronounced as KA-ZE. Love the Scythe Products. Please check also Scythe Wonder Snail 120. It is on par with high end 120mm fans.

Great review Mike! Especially the part about the installation process was very well done, so even newcomers can see how freakin easy this is. and: you were so enthusiastic about it all the time! I've been using a Mugen 5 rev. B for about 3 years now on my R5 2600 and am pretty happy. Being a silent enthusiast it could be minimally more quiet, but that's really high-level nagging. it is a very whispery quiet cooler, I'm just very picky ^^

to me this indicates that the none black edition has a problem with the heatpipes aka theres not enough water in them hence why my r5 3600 is always being held back in overclocking

A full magnetic screw driver included, take note Noctua. Stop including that metal tool with no rubber grip, it's a hazard.

I preached Scythe in the previous vid even though it's a bit more expensive than the budget ones 🙊I switched the Fuma2 and it is amazing, I had to triple check if it's on, it's so silent. 5800X still gets a bit hot during rendering but my case is not airflow optimized. And FINALLY a product that is actually cheaper here in Japan than overseas 😅 edit: the E is not silent in Kaze :) It means "wind".

thinking about going from 240 AIO from Asus to this..it gets so loud..and cooling is good but not great..i love that Mugen5 ARGB version one... hope it will be good for 5900X. I mean Mugen5 version with 2xfans ARGB

Hope Scythe does a black edition of the Fuma 2. That extra 300 fps with increased airflow could really make the Fuma 2 as the perfect air cooler, if price don't go to the sky. Still, Fuma 2 is my favourite.

Thanks to let me show my error. I should correct it but it's so hilarious that, maybe, it's better to let it as it is. At least someone can get some laughs from it 😅

The flashy lights and pipes of an AIO may have tempted me this time, but I'll go for an air cooler in my next build haha. A big chunky air cooler looks badass.
