Learn the structure of haemoglobin and how haemoglobin transports oxygen. Learn about the different types of haemoglobin proteins and their properties. Different partial pressures and environments result in haemoglobin having different affinities for oxygen. Learn what the Bohr effect is and how it affects the affinity of oxygen.

Hi miss, in the OCD curve why does the saturation of oxygen start increasing at low partial pressure of oxygen? Because if lower po2 is at the tissues then why does the haemoglobin need to aquire the oxygen in the first place because isn't loading supposed to happen at the lungs and not tissues anyways? Thanks a lot!
@MissEstruchBiology
@MissEstruchBiology 3 жыл бұрын
what this means is that haemoglobin isn't unloading all of the oxygen at those tissues, only some. This is useful as it prevents wasting oxygen, as if those tissues have a higher ppO2 it means there is already some oxygen at that sight. Hope that helps 😊
@helen6310
@helen6310 2 жыл бұрын
hi miss, do you mind explaining what is actually meant by partial pressure, thanks :)
@MissEstruchBiology
@MissEstruchBiology 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, partial pressure is a way to consider the concentration of gases, but it literally means the pressure that would be exerted by one of the gases in a mixture if it occupied the same volume on its own.

8:57 what is the advantage? if there is little to no CO2 present as it means there is more saturation of oxygen?
@MissEstruchBiology
@MissEstruchBiology 3 жыл бұрын
If there is little carbon dioxide present then this indicates that there is little respiration occurring, and therefore no advantage of unloading oxygen. Therefore, it is more advantageous to have a higher affinity so that the Hb can become saturated with oxygen to deliver oxygen to respiring cells where it is needed. Hope that helps.

At 7:21 says curve shift to left, increased affinitt so uploads more oxygen. Do you mean loads more 02 or in the sense that unloading easier

Do universities look at as-level grades or a level grades when you apply
@MissEstruchBiology
@MissEstruchBiology 3 жыл бұрын
Not every school does AS levels, so not always. Every uni focuses on particular aspects. Some heavily base decisions on gcses, others on personal statement others on predicted grade. Have a look at each universities admissions page to find out more. Hope that helps

In the section where you mention the dove, the curve shifts to the right meaning it is easier to unload oxygen to respiring tissues but if the affinity of oxygen is decreased how will it meet the dove's metabolic requirement ?
@jasonsingh9698
@jasonsingh9698 11 ай бұрын
The curve shifts to the right as there is low affinity. This means more oxygen is unloaded readily. This is favourable because it allows more oxygen to be unloaded at the tissues of the dove, so that the dove can respire further to transfer energy in the form of ATP. Metabolism is the rate of chemical reactions occurring in the body, so if the dove has a high metabolic rate, it means it produces more waste (CO2) and uses more o2. Therefore, the dove's haemoglobin has adapted using low affinity of o2.
@savannahsaid6906
@savannahsaid6906 11 ай бұрын
@@jasonsingh9698 it makes more sense now, i did forget about how the co2 concentration can also effect haemoglobin which then releases the o2 in favour!

How does carbon monoxide cause less oxygen to be delivered to our muscles? Is it because CO binds to haemoglobin more strongly than O2 therefore it takes up the space instead of O2 so less O2 can bind? Or is it because CO causes O2 to bind more strongly to the haemoglobin therefore O2 can bind but its just that it can't be unloaded?
@MissEstruchBiology
@MissEstruchBiology 2 жыл бұрын
Hello , the first one. It binds to Hb and in doing so blocks oxygen from binding.

If HbF has higher affinity for oxygen at low partial pressures, doesn't that mean it unloads oxygen less readily at respiring cells? How is that helpful
@Alex-up8pg
@Alex-up8pg Ай бұрын
Its meant to be helpful cause oxygen can associate more easily to the haemoglobin, so it's helpful in low oxygen environments eg high altitudes
@aeshakhan-by2bu
@aeshakhan-by2bu Ай бұрын
@@Alex-up8pg okay but it dissociates less readily too, so less can be taken up in respiration so what's the point since we only need oxygen for respiration?
