Thank you very much for not only this video but all of your videos - today I found myself to be having a bad day and struggling in class did not help but now I understand everything! I’m very grateful for your videos and I would like to say that they have contributed a vast amount to what I have learned in maths. It has turned maths from something that I’m hopeless in to something I can enjoy and even feel satisfaction from :)

Love these videos, but may I suggest adding a letter to the "LATE". Teacher in school adds a I to make it "LIATE", the I standing for Inverse Trig.

instead of LATE you could use LIATE, where the 'I' represents inverse trigonometric functions

Hi sir, I really appreciate your videos you have saved my maths a level perfectly condensed content that’s easy to understand. I have a question for using the late rule with ‘by parts’ what if both functions being multiplied are trig or both ln how do you know which to make U?

Hi Jack, a quick question on how to apply the LATE rule. the solution to I=3x(x-1)^4 involves integration by parts where they set u=3x and dv/dx = (x-1)^4 They both fall under A (Algebra) so is there a rule we can use here? Thank you.

Yes, let u be the one that differentiates to 0 the fastest, so choose u = 3x

What would be my u and my dv/dx in the integral xcos2x, bc the marksheme put x as the u, but that doesn’t follow LATE rule?

u=x and dv/dx=cos(2x) It does follow the LATE rule, as x is algebra and cos(2x) is trig.

I am confused as to why xe^x doesn't work for u sub as x is a multiple of 1. 1*x=x therefore x by definition is a multiple of 1 on the outside?

x is not a constant multiple of 1

No, I is for inverse trig. But as differentiating inverse trig isn’t part of A-Level Maths, there’s no advantage to including it here

what if it comes in both algebra? e.g: 2x(x-1)^3 ??

Choose the one that will differentiate to zero the fastest (in this case 2x)

Doesnt work on integral of e^-x cos 2x dx. So LATE doesnt work

For e^-x cos 2x you would still use LATE, as u = cos(2x) and dv/dx = e^-x. However, this is an example of cyclic integration and needs an extra step. It is very similar to the example in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i66mmclzzdzQfGQ.html
