Shortly after take-off, he attacked, inflicting grave injuries to the flight engineer and the co-pilot before the pilot started to fight back. A life-or-death battle ensued as the pilots struggled with Calloway. The plane was put into a dive, which stuck Calloway to the ceiling for a while and neutralized him.

Season 3 Episode 4 "Fight For Your Life": April 7, 1994 - The regular crew of the Federal Express DC-10 freighter was getting ready to leave headquarters in Memphis. Along for the ride was another off-duty FedEx employee, Auburn Calloway a flight engineer. Unbeknownst to the pilots, Calloway had a bone to pick and was scheduled for disciplinary hearings the following day.
Calloway took his place in the jump seat behind the flight crew, beside him was his only piece of luggage, a guitar case. Shortly after take-off, he removed from his case the weapons he had carefully selected: a knife, a spear gun and two sledgehammers. Calloway had a plan and it involved killing the three men and crashing the plane. He wanted everything to look like an accident so his estranged family could collect the large life insurance policy he had just taken out.

What gets me about this guy isn't just the crime, which is horrific, but the "temporary insanity" he would plead afterward trying to avoid all responsibility for his actions. In prison he would go on to write about how unfair it was that he got a life sentence for his actions, given all the injustice in the world. There is plenty of injustice, but that doesn't excuse the things he did to others. His actions, the way he planned this, could only be described as cold blooded.
@sugarkane1571
@sugarkane1571 10 ай бұрын
Calling that “temporary insanity” is laughable, but I can see how he blames the world for his actions. He was down on his luck through little fault of his own, and being in a echo chamber in his poisonous thoughts for so long led to his actions. He’s a man that the system failed. But the fact that he still hasn’t self-reflected that what he did was heinous really says how lost he is. Justification doesn’t validate actions, and it was his decision in the end to do it.
@matrioshkaforever7753

He was treated with unjustness, but the 3 pilots on board didn’t deserve to go thru any of this - the fact that the crew even survived is astonishing in the first place. If you forgot he was planning to do that on a crew with a female - let’s be honest here if he did that to that other crew the would have been gone for sure there is no way a female could pilot/fight while suffering this bad of a blow to the head.
@persona2grata

@@matrioshkaforever7753 I'm not sure, but I think you may be misunderstanding the tone of my comment. I do not think of him as the victim, even though I'm willing to concede both that there is plenty of injustice in the world, especially for black men, and that he himself may have experienced some injustice at points in his life. But he chose to do this horrible thing uncaring of the harm he would cause others and I believe he fully deserves to suffer the consequences of it; I find his inability to take ownership for his actions contemptable, not relatable.

They did have the right experience and knowledge but at the same time, that plane isn't made to withstand that type of force and beating. I am amazed that Callaway had the strength to keep fighting as long as he did. These pilots were on their game. If they didn't have the expertise and training and knowledge, doing what they did wouldn't have even been a remote possibility. And that's why it's extra heart breaking non of them will fly again. If you want anyone up front it's them. I'll take slight risk of seizure. That's what the FO and AP are for. Medical rules for aviation are sometimes harsh... for good reason, but still. They do make exceptions in special circumstances and they deserve that. You think it's a regular day and suddenly you're fighting for you life., performing maneuvers you would ordinarily go to prison for and sustaining life altering, career ending injuries, just trying to do the right thing. If the plan really was to crash into FedEx HQ then those guys saved a lot more than 4 lives. Possibly hundreds.

Yeah it was apparently extremely beloved among some pilots. More like an overpowered business jet than a liner. And remember he did these maneuver pretty heavily loaded, an empty airliner can do some crazy stuff but fully loaded is not usually the time to start doing things like approaching the speed of sound or rolling it around etc... I'm sure many would have come apart in the dive. The control surfaces go and then you can't pull out and go supersonic and the aircaft breaks apart.

I live in Memphis. At the time this happened i had a day job as a nurse in a psych clinic. Our clinic ran parallel with the Fed Ex approach to their runway, The Memphis International Airport is laterally placed and their runway is far removed from Fed Ex. Anyway, I was outside on a break in the back of the building. i grew up on Air Force bases dad was a lifer, so I heard this fed ex plane making high pitch whining sounds as if he were rapidly elevating then dropping altitude. When the plane came in to view that is what I saw, the plan was not gliding on the lift or wind it was being manipulated making side to side front to tail lifting up and down. I jumped up and moved to the front of the building, I knew that wouldn't be far enough if the plane went down as close to us as it was. I listened for a long time and never heard a crash or saw any smoke so got the scoop on the evening news.

He took that plane to the edge of ripping itself apart. Just amazing, truly, and the pilots not in control and being thrown around but still fighting. Every man on this plane is a fighter. If Calloway's goal was to take control of the plane and fly it into the FedEx hub 9/11 style, there wouldn't have been anyway to distinguish a spearhead injury or a hammer injury from any injury cuz there would have been nothing left. The attack started not too long after takeoff which means the plane was loaded with fuel. The plane would have exploded once it made contact with the hub just like the airplanes exploded when they made contact with the twin towers, the Pentagon and the field. Like the FedEx plane, those 4 planes were long distance flights that were chosen because of the amount of fuel they had to carry to make it their destination. The more fuel the bigger the explosion the bigger the damage!!! This guy planned things out well. What he didn't plan on was the change in crew. Had it been his crew as it was supposed to be, the outcome probably would have been worse then 9/11 cuz according to this episode, one of his crew members was female which for him given his background, he saw as easy to take down. This crew was 3 males; a little harder but in his warped mind, still not a problem. All he had to do was incapacitate them long enough to gain control of the plane so he could carry out his suicide mission and mass killing!!! It blows my mind that he did this to 'benefit' his ex and kids. All he did was scar them for life!!!

Thank you comrades Iraq vet here I'm just glad that this flight had you on it, I doubt that regular pilots would have had the experience necessary to do what you did as far as flying the plane

I feel like I've been watching a Hollywood action movie just with how freaking crazy the whole situation was. It's truly incredible they got out of this alive and victorious

I agree with you! In fact, I’d say the actors in these reenactments are better than most of today’s Hollywood “A-list” actors, especially better than the spoiled, talentless nepo-kids. They do a fantastic job.

Stanford grad. Navy pilot. A flight engineer at a major company. Although not a pilot, that’s still quite an accomplishment. I can’t believe he would do something like this.

It's a miracle that they succeeded in regaining control of the plane and landing it (overloaded with fuel and speed.) It took teamwork, determination, skill, and the desire to survive. True heroes
