A Lion in my Tent

Күн бұрынTerrifying experience while #camping with wild animals in #Africa. Camping at night can be scary. We wake up before dawn and have a close encounter with a male #lion in Mabuasehube, on the Botswana side of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. As far as I know, there have not been any animal attacks in Mabua, but you do have to be vigilant: the campsites here are unfenced and wild animals are free to come and go as they please.

Because the campsites in this area are unfenced, wild animals such as lions, jackals and hyenas sometimes come by to view the tourists. We were standing outside our tent before dawn, brushing our teeth when a young male lion walked straight into our camp. The lion went into our tent, chewed one of our pillows (thankfully not mine), bit my tent, and dragged our camping chair into the bushes before wandering off.
It was a pretty terrifying experience. Luckily we were unharmed. What scared me in retrospect, is that I had just happened to look in the direction the lion was approaching from. If I had not looked up, or if he had approached from behind the car or tent, we would only have noticed him when he was a couple of metres away. If that had happened, I think I would have run away, which would have been a very bad idea.
While a lion in one’s tent is rare, lions commonly enter camps in the Mabuasehube area because uninformed visitors leave taps running or bowls of water out for them. Most visitors sleep in roof-top tents or caravans, so they are relatively safe.

If it’s one of the Kruger lions then no surprise. The lions of Kruger National Park regularly kill and eat refugees crossing the border into South Africa from Mozambique. They cross at night to avoid authorities but unfortunately they have to contend with lions then.

Mabuasehube is always great for close encounters of the feline kind :-) We were there in september 2019 and camped at one of the Bosobogolo pan campsites. I was kind of frustrated because we saw lots of wildlife around the other pans, but not much at Bosobogolo. But the second night, after dinner, we were sitting near the campfire and finishing our wine when a big lion and lioness casually walked besides our chairs past the fire and into the bush... We were so flabbergasted that we didn't even move, and that might have been just the right thing to do. Can't wait to go back to that marvellous place!

If u were inside the tent zipped up, was there a possibility he would have tore down and entered inside?? If yes, why sleep on ground in a tent in those areas where lions stroll around?

Very unlikely. But he was curious, so it's possible he could have ripped a hole in the tent. I would camp there again in a ground tent, but definitely not such a thin one - I think I'd be safe in a decent canvas tent.

Even a rooftop tent isn't safe. A lion could climb up the bonnet and reach you easily. And that's not gonna be an easy escape at all. It's best if you avoid camping around wild creatures.

A rooftop tent is very safe. Or even a strong canvas ground tent. I think I am probably in more danger driving through Johannesburg than I am sleeping a night in the bush.

@@tanushreemajumder7872 Sure. There's always some risk with travel - long hours on the road, malaria in some places, scorpions etc. The danger from large wild animals is quite small. Mabuasehube is a bit different from most places - the lions have been fed by campers, so they visit the camps often. So you need to be extra careful. I will not go back in a flimsy tent like that one, but I would feel quite safe in a rooftop or canvas one.

Dam that's scary because when that lion realized it was a tent he charged in there like he knew a victim is supposed to be in there. Makes you wonder if it's attacked campers or villagers which seems likely due to its behavior.

I don't think so. He was just curious and not afraid at all. He wasn't trying to hunt humans. But if there was someone in the tent it would have been a rather unpleasant way to wake up in the morning

Shucks I wish I knew the name of video on KZfaq about a documentary they did in some African village where those lions eat them because they go in their hut or straw house and I would've sent it to you if I knew the vid but sure if you watched it you will be having a different feeling for lions. Isn't it obvious when you see those English hunters go to Africa you should know they don't have those type of guns for nothing🤦🏼♂️

@@Rain_berries yeah, we did after that 👍. This was my first night in that area so I was not fully aware of how habituated the lions were. I've camped a lot in areas with lions before but usually they keep their distance. The problem in Mabua is that it is very dry and some people leave water for the animals so they come right into the campsites.

Look up that incident in Namibia, where a couple were sleeping inside a large camper truck. The husband heard something scraping the vehicle, so he went to check the open window. He was nearly dragged out by a leopard which jumped up and grabbed him. His wife helped him fight it off and they slammed the window shut. He was badly injured but was lucky to survive. In southern tanzania man eating lions are known to claw their way through peoples houses to eat them! Nat Geo (i believe) did a documentary on this a few years back.

@@naturephotography8837 give me advice, at some point im going to rent a all terrain suv and traverse botswana namibia and tanzania at least those 3 as of now and i will 100% never sleep in a ground or roof top tent with big cats elephants and everything else lurking around thats just too much of a risk for me i dont want to be eaten alive. I plan on sleeping in the reclines seat or whatever is most comfortable with the windows shut and if its too hot just barely cracked. Let me know if my plan has any possible flaws i love these countries and want to travel them by car but i dont want to fall victim to the rightful rulers of that land.

@@ledpinkdefsabbathwhokinksd9733 Dont worry your chances of getting attacked are extremely low, provided you use common sense. The incidents i mentioned are very rare. I have slept in tents many times in Africa. But rooms are a good option if you are worried and ready to spend extra.

Actually slept a couple more nights in the tent since we were joined by my parents who were in a campervan, so we could call them if we needed someone to see what was going on outside. But after we left them, we moved to the vehicle. Not super comfortable, but slept pretty well considering.

Thankfully we were outside the tent when he arrived. If we had woken a bit later we might have opened the tent to find him outside.

Yeah, if you like the drama stick with the ground tent. Since this incident, my tent has actually been totally destroyed by baboons (video about that coming on Saturday) so I definitely need a new solution. But I think I'm gonna go with a trailer with a tent on top - I don't like the idea of having to pack up my tent before I go for a drive in the morning.
