Wow! How smooth it‘s running! +good sounding. I‘m really exited. I‘m sorry to be 58 years old now and wasn‘t yet really aware of that Lions.

I once read that when the original Lion was introduced in the 1830s, they were limited to no more then 35 miles per hour because some medical people said 40mph was too dangerous as it could cause air pressure against the eyeballs of passengers. The lack of protection from the weather is typical of the period, but doctors never worried about the employees! To think that the full size engine changed railroading into a practical means of transportation and then went on to serve in various functions until the 1920s is a marvelous testament to the early Victorian engineers! This model, which runs as well as the original, is a testament to model builders everywhere!

My friend built one of these (not from kit) and sold it recently (along with the wagons he built for it). I was fortunate enough to end up owning his 7.25" metro-vick and it's a work of ART!

We were visiting a preservation site once and a little girl pointed to the injector overflow and exclaimed with glee ‘Look, look. The engine is doing a Wee-Wee!’ Huge crank throw on this one looks great! How did the crew withstand driving into the teeth of a northerly gale??? I read of a fireman who failed to check the fire on a loco substituted on an express only to find power falling off because the fire had been thrown out completely!!!!

That’s a gorgeous locomotive, Keith. Such a Victorian-Era classic. There was a Lion locomotive in 5 inch in Australia as well, I think in Queensland from memory, but I don’t know where it is now. I live in South Australia and am part of a model engineering club myself. I’m yet to build a locomotive or wagon but I have aspirations to do so in the future. Money and time is the real kicker lol 😆. For now, I’ll drive locomotives where I can and gain knowledge and understanding from people such as yourself as well as people I’ve met in the hobby. Thanks for sharing with us. Take care and stay healthy. Regards, Caleb

Last video, I thought the lower fitting for the water gauge was a little skewed, I just thought it was the camera angle. Looks straight now. Oh well, looks very neat and trim. Love watching your steam tests. :)

Because you wondered why the machine continues to run without fire... this is a completely normal phenomenon and is called "post-vaporisation" (in german "nachverdampfung" i dont know the english term). The higher the pressure, the higher the boiling temperature. When the pressure drops, the water vaporises. "Steam accumulator locomotives" (german "Dampfspeicherlokomotiven") work according to this principle and normal full scale steam locomotives also show this very noticeably. That is why a steam locomotive can also be operated above their boiler limit. For example, when used on a express railway with many stops and departures or when accelerating heavy trains when the boiler pressure drops. The energy is stored in the form of boiler water during braking and stopping and can be used during acceleration. But the fireman has to be able to handle it and know his locomotive, the track, the coal and the limits. Below the boiler limit, you can drive through the landscape without stress and smoke with a very thin bed of fire. And then the whole thing starts to be fun. 🙂 However, the pressure drop should never be greater than 20% of the maximum boiler pressure!

Nice to see it running again, you'll have no trouble keeping up steam pressure when running round a track on coal, it ran well for me at Urmston.

Good running session Keith. Nice to see it runs as good as it looks. It also seamed very stable when running at higher speeds. By the way, what is that large traction engine under the cover in the back ground? I can't find the playlist for it.

Keith, do the two valve handles on the bottom of the water gauge foul each other, and if they do does it matter in this instance?

At 9:15, for example, it seems the back driver is a bit out of round especially when sighting between the two drivers. Also noticed similar in your last video. It may not be an issue. I do not know. What do you think?

I have already mentioned what this problem is in a previous video in the series . . . . the crankshaft is assembled using "Roll Pins" and they are loose. I will in the fullness of time ream the crankshaft and fit taper pins
