During outdoor activities such as hiking, bushcraft, and the like, you may not always have spare laces on hand. Paracord can be an excellent substitute in such situations. Today, I'll show you how to make boot laces from paracord by neatly and securely shaping the ends for easier threading through the eyelets on the boots, as well as for a more aesthetically pleasing look. During the process, pay special attention to safety. Specifically, handle the paracord and lighter carefully during melting. You may also consider using gloves for this purpose.

Short info: I've been using these laces for about ten days (hiking). As long as they are tied using the double slipped "square knot" instead of the "granny knot," I haven't had any issues with them coming undone. We'll see how they hold up in terms of resistance to friction through the holes and hooks on the boots.

Use cable insulation tubes, that shrink on heating. Various sizes and colors. Like brand new aglets.

Of course, there are many options. This tutorial demonstrates this particular method.

A thing we did in the army was to tie a tight knot at the end of the laces so that when you undid them and they would not pull out through the top holes, saving time in the morning when getting out of our sleeping bags out on exercise or deployment.

Yes, that's a good idea for boots that have only eyelets for lacing.

Before I cut cord I wrap a band of masking tape over where I’m to cut. I cut across the cord in the middle of the tape then light each end (one at a time) and when alight, hold vertical so the flame sits over a contained molten puddle. Blow out. The tape works as an aglet as you lace up. Then remove and you have a neat sealed end. Can use on larger synthetic rope with little risk of burns.

Just heat up about a half inch of the cord and squeeze to form the ends or put on some shrink tubing. That's how I do it only I use survival cord in my boots

Neat hack for making an aglet on the paracord laces. I used Survivor Cord on my boots. It has three extra strands besides the usual 550 strands, thin snare wire, fishing line and waxed jute tinder. The Survivor Cord laces are heavier and stiffer than regular 550 paracord laces.

Yes, I'm familiar with Survivor Cord. Well, I can say that those are truly "Survival Laces"

Hi, there is a trick to making the ideal laces for boots that was taught to us new recruits to the Parachute Regiment by the old sweats from the WW2. Always recover ( scrounge) parachute cord from damaged shoots on the DZ. Take out the inner cord. Make a decision whether to tie a single cord or a looped cord. Single cord, torch both ends and nip, tie a single knot on one end, start with the outer hole at the toe end of your boot, pass cord in a continuous loop until all holes are filled, loop cord through top loop then wrap around ankle, loop through boot loop again and twist cord around the cord to secure it without having to actually tie a knot. Using the longer chord for a boot lace just tie it normally but make sure that the laces don’t cross over each other on top as the Brits never tied their boots the cross over pattern showing. That was the German way! The benefit of pulling out the filler cord in the Para cord was that it allowed you to iron the cord flat. The advantage of flat la es is they knot well and there is virtually no slippage in the knots. Finally tie on the ankle puttees and you are good to go. Ancient traditions copied from the Roman Legions! Cheers mate. Harera

I have tried using gutted paracord for shoe strings but the nature of the strings will not allow then to stay tied unless I double the tie.

Certainly, of course, traditional laces are preferred, but this is just an example of how to utilize paracord in case of need

You were very wasteful with the tinfoil. You only needed about an inch of it if you folded it width wise instead of length wise.

CBYS - What a great tip and demonstration of replacing worn-out laces with paracord. I figured on the modification of the tapered ends for ease of lacing; however, the extra melting method to create more of a proper aglet on the ends is brilliant. I have a pair of hikers that need new laces... I think this paracord technique is a perfect choice. Thanks and Happy Trails! 🇺🇸 🏕 🪢
