I've done these before but still learned several things. Thanks Mike. The long form video is great, although I watched it in 3 parts. Had a similar problem with the bolts on the LT77 leaking oil. Someone put an old LT77 on my '91 and it didn't have the old shifting linkage. Damned drilled through holes!

Looking forward to that. As a boy I grew up learning about mechanics from my uncle who was an hgv mechanic. I took a different career path, I won't tell you my occupation cause you'd laugh. Anyway, I have a Td5 and disco 300tdi , practically rebuilt the tdi and being stretched now with the Td5 , diagnostics and sensors! These old trucks keep me sane. Grateful for your chanel Mike, I really look forward to your videos and the good humour. It's a real pity they don't have Td5's over there, they're great engines and we'd be a lot further on if you were demonstrating. All the best, Danny

Thanks Danny Not many Td5 here as people are put of by the electronics I was considering shipping one over and stripping it, but it costs a lot of money, and I only get £6 a day from You Tube advertising ( and then Google take 45%!) So now my philosophy is just to repair/rebuild customers vehicles Been through the importing heartaches before and that is behind me now!

The Bearmach vac pump has the same stamping, mine has failed after 6 months and was ticking by 2 months. I think out of all the noises a Land Rover can make the ticking from either the vacuum pump or the lift pump has to be the most annoying. Good video is there a torque setting for the cyclone bolts mine is still pissing out oil even with a new o ring, I managed to get cheap genuine bagged pipes, they were very soft and no longer braided.

The never-ending problem with parts The genuine vac pumps are £460! by the time I import it to Canada they would be almost $1000 Not made a penny on it

With the rubber hose to the rocker cover get genuine or oem as the aftermarket britpart collapses and no joke looks like a condom.... bhahahhaha

They are terrible - but the aftermarket silicone hoses are good

My LT230 leaks despite a complete reseal last year. Think it was the cheap Brit part seals. I was too cheap at the time to spring for the genuine/Oem seals. For the labor involved in removing this pig from underside the vehicle, 50.00 more in parts would have been worth it. For now I top up LT ever so often. I’m unsure all leaks can ever be permanently stopped haha.

Don't always blame the seals! I always pressure test the boxes with a smoke tester prior to fitting - then never leak for years

I drilled and replaced the seal on the vacuum pump, then replaced the rivets with bolts all while leaving the pump in place on the engine. Turned out to be a good job. But I'm afraid this one is too far against the bulkhead to be able to do it in that way.

Those TDI vacuum pumps are a bleeding disaster! In 15 years of having our 90 we've replaced the pump at least 5 times. They just don't last! We've tried the OEM part, Britpart and Bearmach, they're all as bad. We're strongly considering putting an electrical pump in and forgetting the whole bloody thing
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 жыл бұрын
Even if you buy a genuine part at £460+tax, it still will be bad Pity they didn't put the vac pump on the back of the alternator like many other manufactures I know the exhaust is close, but it could have been modified

Hi Mike, Love the long video's ( less time to work on the RRC and Disco 1), Talking of Discos does the vacuum pump on a 200tdi sound the same as the 300tdi when worn ? would be helpful to know before I strip down the top end to replace the cam followers, The ticking only starts above 1,000 rpm. Can't wait for the 300tdi/RRC, Just what I am going to do next when I get my wife's Disco sorted.

The vac pump on the 200Tdi was a vane pump and gave very few problems The cam followers on the Tdi's also give few problems - in fact they are quite a good design - never replace the rollers with cheap aftermarket ones - they are not treated the same as originals - I have seen a few that look like thruppenny bits! Get yourself a mechanics stethoscope and try and trace the ticking

Another plus one for a "Slickshift" upgrade by Syncro Gearboxes, if you are going to fool around with the shifter on any box, you may as well replace it with a "Slickshift" and thank yourself every time you change gears here after. www.syncrogearboxes.com
