A long walk through 2020 | Review of Year 2020 in 4K - starting by the tomb of King Harold at Waltham Abbey and ending down by the Thames at Wapping.

This year we walked rivers both lost and running through hills (the Chelmer, the Chess, the Fleet, the Neckinger, Ingrebourne, the Cranbrook, the Lea and more), we learnt about the history of our local streets, I did my longest walk to date because I had a bad back and couldn’t sit down. Our walks also took us back through time into London's past and we saw the beginnings of its future. This video contains just a few of my walking highlights of the year.
I just want to say an enormous thank you for walking with me through this strangest of years, you’ve been amazing company, your comments on the videos have been an endless source of knowledge and lore and just to have you along has meant the world to me. With that I’d like to wish you the Happiest of New Years, and as ever … I look forward to seeing you on the next walk wherever that may be!

John - it has been an utter pleasure to walk with you across this year. By chance - or good fortune - I joined you as lockdown started and have walked on many of your walks with you. Standout for me are your river and estuary walks and, of course, the River Lea........... there is a frisson of excitement I feel whenever you say "confluence" ....... anyway, thanks for your outstanding efforts across the year, I, for one, am grateful for your endeavours... thank you.

Wonderful video John I loved your comment @23,50 "when in a subway for the first time who knows where you will emerge or what world you will be thrust into" , I found it rather fitting and relevant with the times we live in today, who knows what kind of world will will be in post Brexit and pandemic. But as you said at the end of the East London edgelands video "better days are up ahead" Thanks you John

Thank you so much for your video walks, John. I discovered your channel a week or so ago, when scanning youtube for all things Walthamstow, my home town. You remind me so much of a lovely, red haired , teenage boy called John, that I used to go for long philosophical walks with around Walthamstow and the bit of Epping Forest by the Forest School. I live on beautiful Vancouver Island now, but often get homesick. More so since I got back from a six month stay taking of my Mum in 2018/2019. Your walks and knowledge sharing have been a wonderful tonic during this tightened phase of our lockdown. Thank you for being my tour guide down many memory lanes..

I only discovered your channel a few months ago, Mr Rogers, but it has become essential weekly viewing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your philosophy and your perspectives. I still cannot believe the channel only has 16.4k subscribers (at the time of writing), as the quality of the content deserves far wider enjoyment; however, I have every confidence that figure will grow. I was bored during late May, so I typed Leyton into KZfaq and never expected to see such an interesting and quality video on the area. I never quite appreciated how interesting local history is before watching that. The walks around Walthamstow, Redbridge, Epping Forest and the Lee Valley were really good I lived in Leytonstone for 3 years until Feb 2020, and when you start your films in the back doubles and on Grove Green Road towards the train station reminds me of those days

I discovered your channel a few days ago, and over the Xmas 2020 period I've watch almost everything! One thing I've noted, London and it's suburbs offer a greatly condensed amount of attractions! I live in mid-Norfolk and would have to walk ten times the distance, to see the same number of sights! My favourite area that you covered is the Eastend of the Thames Valley! Wapping is now my prime destination, in the whole of Europe!

They bring so many beautiful memories of my time in London , Bucks and other places I used to live in the U.K. . Wish I could walk those trials and watch the sunsets on top of Chiltern hills . I "found" your channel about 6 months ago and have thoroughly enjoyed the films. They have helped me through these difficult times. Living over in Gloucester my only visits to London was in the 1970/80's to the speedway tracks at Rye House, Hackney, Wimbledon, Wembley, White City and Crayford but the films are so interesting. Keep going, wherever that may be!

I would like to send a big thank you to you. I stumbled on your channel during the first peak and your walks inspired me to get out there. Working from home does take its toll on you sometimes. I have lived all my life in Leyton and never really explored I have now completed quite a few of your walks which also inspired me to pull out my old bike from the cellar. Hi John, I would like to thank you for your wonderful and educational walks of London. I came across your channel early this year and I've been hooked. I wait patiently for your next walk every Sunday. My wife bought me your book, Another London for Christmas! Well Christmas day I couldn't put your book down. I worked in London for a couple of years 2016 to 2018 and I am always returning to London. I fell in love with the place. The architecture and the History fascinates me. This year I have not been able to come to London due to the strange year with Covid 19 effecting so many people. I think as London as my home. I don't know what it is but I fell in love with the place and its under my skin. Hopefully next year I will be able to return to and see some of the amazing places you have shown us on your walks. Thanks for keeping me sane this year. I wish you and your family all the best for the new year! Look forward to more of your walks next year! Hi john, thanks for the wonderful video After falling through a rusty drain cover yesterday And the main water pipe suddenly bursting in the kitchen this morning This was just what I needed to lift the day Loved the Loughton and Epping videos I spent many a night car camping at high beech in my late teens And also when I lived in Waltham cross I would walk the river Leigh and I would frequently eat and drink in the fish and eels pub Brought a huge smile to my face seeing the pub again after many years Thanks for the wonderful videos A happy and safe new year to you and your family.

Hi John, I have only recently discovered the films of your wonderful walks. You are so inspiring and informative. I’ve been a tour guide in London for about 15 years and during the pandemic I have been filming some themed tours in central London and am now in the process of constructing a website etc. Thanks again. In a way, I’m so pleased I came to them late as I now have many treats to watch during the latest lockdown as a way of escape. I'm new to your channel and find myself so intrigued. I grew up in Bayswater/Westbourne Park before moving first to Hayes Middlesex, then Staines Middlesex and lastly Kingston. Then I left the UK. That's over 25 years ago and I guess a combination of aging and sentimentality brings me here. Thank you for the great content and insight to parts of London and the surrounding areas that I had very little knowledge about.

Watching your videos one blindingly obvious fact suddenly hit me: there are countless other beautiful & interesting cities in the world, but none of them have the sheer density & diversity of history that London has. No wonder Dr. Johnson's comment is so undeniably true - probably even more so today.

A great review John, thoroughly enjoyable. When I worked for a while in London I should have wandered around East London but I stuck to the City and the tourist areas. Have a great 2021 and hope we get a bit more freedom from the pandemic. My walking target is the Civil War battleground of Antietam which is not too far from us.

Your films have been a real highlight of 2020 - providing escape for pandemic induced confinement, vicarious adventures on foot at a relaxing pace, wandering through familiar areas and discoverig new places. Looking forward to more adventure through the overlooked landscape. All the best for 2021.

i really do love yours walks mush. being a squatter and a bicycle messenger for most of my life in the centre of london your content really brings back memories... and now im retired and live on a boat on the river lea your walks and talks about this area are really good for me.. thank you.....

Hi John, I stumbled across you only recently, you were filming in Mildmay road and I was watching you from my house wondering what you were doing, later that day you popped up on KZfaq, and got excited telling my wife and daughter you were filming in our road, a couple of days later Highbury fields forever came out and Mildmay road featured in that episode, my daughter bought your book this other London for my birthday today, and I’m absolutely made up, I’m really enjoying your videos, and look forward to many more, see you on the next one “wherever that may be?” All best for 2021.
