Thanks, David. This was a real treat. The RCA Victor has to be the best "unboxing" video on KZfaq. And it's a beautiful radio. The big Philco by the wall, though...that's was my favorite of the exceptional pieces in this collection. The woodwork, styling, and finish are superb. It's nice piece of antique furniture, even if the radio doesn't work. And thanks Shango for documenting the collection and it's known history. Good stuff. :)

Great collection and an interesting guy. You can tell that the radio/electronics bug bit him early in life and has always been there. I know the feeling as many watching this video do also. Good job. Thanks.

Very nice collection. And what a gem that new old stock radio in the is.

That's a nice collection David has there. The NOS RCA still in the box is a '48-'49 model....I had one. As someone that fixes and restores old radios, my first instinct would be to get it working again, but then I thought "No---it's only original once". I'd put it back in the box the way it came out, tape it back up, and keep it in a very safe place. It's a survivor, a museum piece.

Right, once you work on it the value and rarity is gone forever. He could also get one that was used and get it working and display it together with the one in the box.

You can still buy the Shure 520DX aka "green bullet" microphone. I own one and have used it as a harp (harmonica) mic for years. "Little Walter" - the famous blues harp player - used that model extensively.

Thanks for sharing the history of the cool radios! When I was a kid during grade school, mainly during the 5th & 6th grades, I used to have a snoopy shaped transistor radio. Used that a lot! Also, I watched this video instead of the debates...this was far more interesting.

That Zenith FM only is a unique set sold by the Zenith Radio Corp. to promote the FM (Frequency Modulation) developed by Major and Professor Edwin Howard Armstrong of Columbia University. Chicago had only one FM Radio Station in the early 1950's and is marked on the Face Dial of this radio by the small white dot at 100 on the FM Dial. This radio was oftentimes given away as gifts to people having bought another Zenith product, whether it be a console, television or even another radio.

Strongly believe the dry cell on the PA was a bias source for the carbon microphone. When I was a kid, my parents had a cellphone in the car, that had a battery that you had to carry around in a bag.

Nice collection but the best part of collecting vintage radios is getting them to "sing" again!

Those older sets were made of quality that lasted and were made to be fixed. I didn’t know Lear made house radios. He invented the 8 track while Muntz invented the 4 track. That Lear radio had a good sound.

The Motorola Brick, I had one of those in the early 90's, great phone, heavy in you pocket when you didn't have a belt on. Very nice collection and commentary. Amazing that N.O.S. radio.

I have one of those little Sylvania radios. They're designed to be operated facing up. Very sensitive for a simple 4-transistor set.

The Antique Wireless Museum in Bloomfield NY has the very first analog cell phone, I think it may have been a prototype. I got a guided tour and the guy said the gentleman that had it took it when it was going to be thrown out by the company he worked for, i don't remember the company name. That museum has a lot "firsts" in it including the first transistor radio made, not the Regency that was later mass marketed, and one of Armstrong's first FM radios he built when developing FM. Facinating place.

There were not a huge number of technical innovations between 1920 and 1940, however the form and style had changed considerably. We still use superheterodyne AM today, even though it was invented during WW1. The FM radio that is widespread today, was invented in the early 1930s. What changed the most was the method of manufacture, which brought the price of a radio down by an order of magnitude, and standardized many mass-production techniques. This basic design plan persisted until well into the 1980s.

I still have the old radio, on the right, with Mickey Mouse on the dial. Got it for Christmas when I was about 10 and I'm 67 now.

Really cool collect and narratives! I really liked the mics, the pill mic that read "On The Air" for some dumb reason made me think of Gary Owens, all though he didn't use a pill mic, I believe his was a large diaphragm! The larger Allied mic is called a "carbon" mic, those mics are very cool and can fetch a hefty price on eBay....for the most part, that's how carbon can look....nekkid! It would be cool to see Shango's personal collection as well!

Shang, many a capacitor manufacturer has claimed over the years that their capacitors would last forever, but they all turned out to be wrong. Nobody knows if mylar will really remain stable for many years. Only time will tell.

The dry cell was for the microphone. That looks like a condenser mic. The battery could have been to put charge on the mic.

Question... Does anybody know much about Gilbert radios, I've recently come into possession of one it's quite large and very similar to the philco one the guys showing in the video, it has a large circular dial at the top with 4 knobs underneath, in the dial it shows various cities around the world it also says its short wave, medium wave and long wave. I'm not sure where to look online to do the research, can anyone help?

I am curious how does a brigntner work ? is it just a boost circuit that boosts the filimant voltage? and if my understanding is right that will simply increaase the emission from the electron accelerator
@dondesnoo17715 жыл бұрын
FennecTECH raises filament voltage hgher temp burns off catthode corrosion like a crt restore box . sometimes you can remove it after few hours use . long term use will make crt deteriorate ..

It's funny how kids are so quick to shun this sort of technology, or even laugh at it as if it's primitive. I'd like to see them build something better or even begin to understand how this sort of technology works.
