PJDN is pure British, there's no way it would ever have translated well to the US market

oh my gosh this made my skin crawl. American's really just do not understand. People Just Do Nothing is so inherently British, you know, the council houses, the Garage music, the working class culture, the comedy. It's so great because it's real, people growing up in inner city London, in flats or council houses, producing music. It could have translated over better I feel like if it was about a group of Hip Hop artists in New York in the Projects or something. But trying to make it about 'trap' 'electro' dj's in the middle of Las Vegas is just so dead.

In that tiny clip, the US Decoy spoke more than the original did in a whole 5 series'

PJDN is the most underrated and least talked about UK comedy ever made. It should be mentioned on the same breath as The Office, Royle Family and Peep Show. And as with those comedies which some US producer has watched in a hotel room in London and decided to rip off; whoever made that pilot completely missed the point of why PJDN is funny.

There’s NO way a show like this could translate to a US version. Partly because the whole private radio/uk garage culture is thoroughly British. And the type of dry, sarcastic humour wouldn’t translate either

The problem with This show is that it such a British program like the pirate radio station the garage music and just the actual people to me it just something you can't re create with an American take on it and the original is a genuine project between friends and let's face it wannabe djs are 10 a penny

I've always thought of PJDN as a kinda UK equivalent to Trailer Park Boys, even tho TPB is Canadian I think that's closer to what you'd need from a US version of PJDN. The equivalent of some Brentford tower blocks is not the Vegas strip, this all just looks like they're trying to make the cast far too cool in order to launch live shows etc rather than letting it happen naturally.

One thing that is fun to think about (and i'm wondering if it may have been intentional) is how much Kurupt FM would hate the music that this whole remake focusses on.

You can remake "The Office" but you can't remake something like "People Just Do Nothing" all the actors are too unique and perfect for their roles...A great show!

I spoke to George Kevwood (Craig) at an afterparty in London after Kurupts "last" live show, 11/18. He said he was filming scenes for the American spinoff, playing his character on a gap year/road trip. The man is a legend, really nice guy.

You can't force something like this. No amount of money can capture the magic. The pjdn boys lived the life together, the process was organic. No casting agents, producers etc etc. That's why we love it

PJDN is raw British comedy. a fantastic cast and writers made something so beautiful from the documentary 'Tower block dreams'. It really doesn't lend itself to a direct cultural copy.

They could have looked for actors from the American sub culture called “the juggalo” and done the series based around that that would have worked so well, that’s just the perfect sub-culture to make a show like this in America

I feel like the Decoy gender swap could've worked if they had switched her with Beats. US Decoy's actor has more of a "sidekick best friend" vibe than US Beats does imo

Americans just can’t handle a depressing and satirical look on life, a good adaptation would be set in outer New York and have the boys playing gangster rap not realising the scenes moved on

I'd been super curious about this myself. Thanks for making this vid! As both a big PJDN fan and an American, I'm very glad this didn't pan out. No disrespect to the actors. It was just an unnecessary adaptation that would have never worked.

The main problem with US variants of UK comedies is the fact that humor in US differs so much from the UK. Take for example the Office UK version, very dry humor. Most Americans hate that version and live by the American Office variant of essentially fart jokes and quick camera panning to another character.

I wonder if Netflix buying the Albuquerque film studios ended all amazon productions their as they saw it as a competitor. Just a thought. Some things just don’t need to be remade. I moved to the U.K. from America two years ago and I found People Do Nothing to be absolutely amazing and better than most American shows . It does involve a lot of sarcasm which may go over most Americans heads though. British sense of humor is very different to American sense of humor. American humor is more (annoyingly) in your face, laugh now ,(laugh track) type which I don’t find funny at all. They should have just made the show more available to American audiences rather than try and redo it with an “American version”. Just my two cents! Thanks for the video and can’t wait for the movie to come out!

difference is that british people are naturally funny even when they’re not trying to be and americans just aren’t, so mockumentary style american anything doesn’t work

PJDN is basically a British Trailer Park Boys anyway lmao.

Amongst other things pjdn is a comedic insight into the 'working class' in London. It comes from a place of peace and love but is still genuine and funny. I feel when Americans try to replicate these delicate cultural balances and try and poke fun of their working class it comes across as very insincere and just falls flat. The people don't have a true perspective of the people they are trying to replicate and we as the audience pick up on it. The characters feel fake, the scenarios are farfetched and the relationships forced.

Brilliant Fantastic series and needs to come back. There is so much more material that could be written into this, just like the great 'Only fools & Houses' cult classic that ran for years. Bring it back pleeeeeaase✌😃

God this is a mindfuck. Most British sitcoms could, on some level, be adapted for the US market, but this is insane. I come from Brentford, grew up north of the GWR admittedly but my mum as a kid lived on the estate they knocked down to build the houses where Roche lives, and before moving to the country I spent half my time there still. It's THAT specific. All the shooting locations are real, the back alley behind Goddards, Round the back from the old Heidelberg offices by Akash that comes out at the Six Bells, Thames restaurant (which is great btw). We all know a Chabuddy G in West London, in fact, an old school friend Akash Liya who's dad owns Akash Electronics seen in the show was our very own Ultrapaneer growing up. The kids on Green Dragon were ALL versions of the Kurupt crew, nearly as much as the kids on Clayponds but that doesn't look as gritty so I can see the easy decision to use the towers. And it's simply the UKG music that goes only with the exact life circumstances these characters are in that makes the show so on the nose. I suppose I'm saying after that random essay that it's set in a social environment rather than a location, so if someone felt they could move it they really don't get the point of the show to begin with. THROW YA K'S!!!

They knew it was shit! American hasn't got half the music scene we have here, there all rock and cunt'ry music, with a tiny pocket of real people listening to real beats such as proper underground House and Drum & Bass. They could NEVER pull this off!! Great job with the research!👊🏻❤️🙋🏻🇬🇧

PJDN is the funniiest and most entertaining show since...well, Peep Show. It's the only BBC seriesI have watched in what must be a decade. PJDN is centred purely around garage music. For that reason alone, the US cannot imitate the show.
