the valve is normally open a little so to allow fluid to pass thru evaporator,when bulb senses increase temp.the valve metering needle moves downward and the magnitude of travels is controlled by heat adjuster screw.

At the end of my heating cycle I’m getting a knock, knock, knock for several minutes and then goes away. Happens randomly, not all the time, but sounds horrible when it does. It only happens at the end of the cycle. New ICP heat pump unit, this is the second unit they put in. First one did the exact same thing. I researched and from several TVX manufacturers they say the orientation of the valve can cause “hydraulic water hammering effect”. Powerhead need to be facing the sky. Does this sound correct? Any thoughts? Thanks….

About 20 years ago I had this happen on a heat pump. I had no solution at the time. Since that time I have seen it happen when the TXV is pointed downward or horizontal. So yes, it is true. GFM

@@grayfurnaceman thanks so much for responding. What would be the recommendation on a new unit? Change the orientation of the valve? This is the second unit, same issue. Or is there a particular manufacturer that positions the valves in the right position so as for this not to happen? The company is dumbfounded by it, I told them my theory on it but they don’t seem to think that’s an issue, even the engineer at ICP. Would the indoor txv need to be in the right position too? Thanks again!

Where, may I ask, is the screen, or strainer that I read about as sometimes collecting restrictive debris? Thank you.

Brian Fletcher Some of them do not have screens. It would be at the inlet of the valve. GFM

my 5 year old American standard heatpump txv failed , so much for them lasting forever, works fine in ac mode but unit cuts off after 8 seconds in heat pump mode. What cases these valves to fail? They look so simple. Is there any easy way to fix them without vacuum the sytem and brazing a new one on there? Maybe I can hit it with hammer? Heat it up and cool it donw. I know that sounds stupid, but might as well try something since its going to be thrown away anyways!
