The Rough Rider Camp/Scout Knives (RR533 & RR573) have been around for over ten years. They are based on an old Case Camp Knife and feature a old style "Tin Cutter." These solid, well made "Scouts" are among my favorite camp knives and are an extremely affordable knife for anyone who likes/collects the pattern.

Instead of trying to open the tin by pulling the sharp edge UP, do it by pushing the sharp edge DOWN

I love your videos. I love how while you always acknowledge the utilitarian benefit of a knife, but also seemingly also view them as historically significant little pieces of art ,(,which they are). I love yr take on the value of Chinese scout knives. I don't and won't own one...but, they are made very well and are pretty.

I think I may have mentioned this in the video (or it might have been on my video on Cub Scout knives) but the manager of the local Scout Store complained that people complain all the time about the Chinese made knives but they rarely even whisper about all the other stuff in the store that is and has been made off shore literally for decades! Uniforms from Vietnam, El Salvador, patches from China. Hardly anything in the entire store is made in the USA and it has been that way since the 1970s but suddenly they are un-American because the knives aren't made in the US. First time since pre-WWII that regular production BSA and Cub Scout knives had bone covers!

Hi Tobias, I’m a new subscriber and I have to say that this is a very underrated channel. You should have way more subscribers than you do. I have just recently started to revisit my traditional knives and have been carrying one every day, which led me to finding you. Keep up the hard work, you put out some very good content. Also, the camp knife is one of my favorite patterns as well and I would love to see more variety in bone covers from RR.

I would like to get the RR2220 Tiger stripe Jigged bone with the Can Opener from the RR533& RR537 as I like this can opener better then the safety style, and I love the Tiger jigged bone .

Do like the old fashioned chunkiness of these knives. Bought a Boker+ Techtool for that odd occasion an SAK might be not chunky enough but this would have done nicely. A definite future purchase here!

@@KnifeChatswithTobias :- The cut finger...as soon as you started with that old style can opener, it was inevitable that your finger was going to get cut. The only queasy question was how badly & how much blood. By the way, I checked Smokey Mountain Knife Works...they are still selling the Rough Rider camp knife with the old style can opener. I consider that a dangerous piece of equipment, especially for newbie knife buyers.

camping buddy, LOL! Yeah. I’ve used it a dozen times with no problem. But as soon as I started with the camera rolling... I almost knew it was going to go south! I got off lucky. Not sure if you saw my video. I’m running a giveaway/subscription drive. One of the knives I’m giving away is a Camp King in pretty decent shape. Posted it yesterday!

@@KnifeChatswithTobias :- Yes, saw the video, but I stay away from give aways...I'm in Canada and we don't need over rambunctious Border/Customs agents confiscating or charging tax, or brokerage fees by the post office, etc. I just don't order knives from out side Canada anymore. Let someone in the USA win. It isn't as bad as it seems...Blades Canada has over 15,000 knives in stock and I don't know how many others available on-line. I've been looking at one of the Boker camp knives with stabilized wood scales. Good luck on your subscription drive!

camping buddy, we live in a crazy world! A pity that so much government money is wasted on policing nonsense like a pocket knife. Thanks for the well wishes. I’m amazed at how many subscribers to my channel are not from America.

Interesting comparison but not surprised that Rough Rider has the lead at this point. You know I wonder who is in charge of the Rough Rider line? I mean somebody must kind of oversee that brand? It is a house brand so I’m thinking somebody must tell them what to make.

As with so so many tools, this opener would probably work differently for a right-handed person, yes? Do you think it would be much safer for a righty to use? Would they then more likely cut downwards with it? There are several lefties in my family, so this greatly unfair complex of problems has always interested me. (And of course the new style safety can opener is ambidextrous, so that's nice )
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 4 жыл бұрын
MJFallout, it is designed to cut upwards no matter which hand you use. Most early can openers were very tricky to use and were prone to accidents. That said, this one is an excellent box cutter!

BushcraftWoodsDevil, I recall there were those who loved the Ham&Eggs and those who couldn’t stand them. The P38 was the only can opener you needed. Not to mention you could use it to set the headspace & timing on the M2 or set the spark plugs on your 1/4 ton. Best can opener ever made.

I never served, but had some ROTC in college. I vividly remember using the P38 to open those things. One morning on an all night FTX, I had PORK. SLICES IN WATER for breakfast. Constipated for 3 days. Pretty sure that's when I decided the Army life was not for me, lol.
