On today's show the Pugsters consider the definitions of sacraments vs. ordinances before taking a closer look at baptism and the Lord’s Supper. They spend some time on the less discussed images of baptism in the New Testament (the Flood and the Exodus) and the use of the Greek word baptizo in the Septuagint. They then talk about the Lord’s Supper, noting the use of the phrase “body of Christ” in 1 Corinthians and both the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the Supper.

Its also worth considering the day of attonement and its relationship to The Lords Supper - that being the only time any Isrealite was instructed to drink blood. Margret Barker has some great insights on this and how temple theology connects to the lords supper

When referencing the sacraments, and the associated subject of the "means of grace," does this suggest that grace is a substance or even energy (ref. the Orthodox Church - "energeia") that can be transfered or transmitted. This seems to fall into the same category as the Roman Church's notion of grace such that it can be measured (e.g., the so called saints having excessive amounts of grace which the Church can "store up" and then dole out at the discression of priests).

Think of it as an act or place in which God transforms a person by a ritual interaction between ourselves and God. I like the metaphor of a hug in a marriage relationship. The ritual act of a hug actually maintains and cultivates that which it signifies. The joy and intimacy given to me from them isn't a "substance" in that sense, but it is fostered in me by their favor (grace) in the act itself.

To play the Devils advocate Mr. Sunshine. You said “Sacrament is a means of grace but not a means of salvation.” What about Peter saying “Baptism saves?”

The break from the effects and influences of Roman Catholic Church and their doctrines of the middle ages has forced the protestant church to reassess the importance and meanings of all important aspects of the Gospel, naturally the sacraments included
