Love the channel man! Raced when I was younger from 86-99. Bikes I've had 86 cr 80,89 yz 125, 96 kx 250, 92 cr 500. Pismo, glamis, hungry valley, LACR circuit. Them be the days. It's all four strokes now. No one saw that comin.

Had an 85 yz80 in my upper teens. Was pretty amazing at the time lol Water cooled, smooth power delivery, very controllable and the thing just had some crazy low end power... Hill climbs with friends, watching them all hop off while I putted up deep forest hills was amazing! Currently [slowly] restoring a 1980 YZ125. it's about 80% done.

That's funny, mine was an 88 and I remember it having the worst but most fun powerband of any of my minis. It only made power at like 10,000 rpm and it wasn't smooth, it was a light switch haha. If you tried to keep the revs down it would grumble and you could tell it hated it. Still was a badass little bike. Had been ported, bored up to 106 or somewhere around there, a dg exhaust, carb, Tony doukas reeds etc. Definitely a sleeper. Nothing like my current restoration project (89cr250) but it held its own against a few newer and bigger bikes.

@Brian Robinson sounds like the same order I did mine haha. After it was bored out it only wanted to run at high rpms but run it would! It was a scary little bike for sure.

Man that collection is impressive wish I would have kept all my magazines and sales materials over the years. You may have the best moto archive around the articles you can write with that treasure trove of information.

Cool brochure , I had the 1988 Yz 80. Never understood the hate for that bike. Mine was really fast. Raced my friend on his 88 kx 80 very similar. Both stock, he said he though my bike had better mid. Other friend had a 1989 Cr 80 best top end no doubt, best times fast 80's in the 80's . Miss it, thanks for the look back.

Thanks for the video. I remember how pivotal that bike was for Yamaha at the time. My high-school buddy Jeff had a brand new '88 YZ250 at the time. Later, my brother had an '88 YZ490 that he used for hill climbing. Please make more videos. Do one on the WR line.

Had one. 88 yz250 Wish I knew then what I know today about tuning one, but overall, it was a pretty good woods bike for the 90's when I bought it used.

My best friend had a KX 80 1986 model. I had the 87 YZ80 he thought my bike had better mid-range I could win in Drag Race every time I felt his bike stood up in the turns. It definitely sucked up the pumps better & had better top end rpm. I was definitely the small guy so this bike fit me..

That YZ80 was a dog...no I take that back. It was a dog with fleas. The suspension was a hold over from 1983. The rear REFUSED to budge on square edged stuff. Nick name around the track was "Mono Rock" suspension. It was a KX80/CR80 world by 1988 and this thing wasnt remotely competitive. I switched to CR80's in 1985 and never looked back at my old YZ's.
