I recently got the opportunity to film this (old-school) typical German apartment in Berlin, built all the way back in 1900. This beautiful Berlin apartment is situated in the district of Charlottenburg. It holds 42 square metres of interior space, is situated on the ground floor, and it's pretty much built next to a flipping castle. Join me, as I do an in-depth apartment tour in Berlin Charlottenburg of what Germans would call an Altbau apartment.

Another wonderful apartment tour. In NYC our equivalent of the Altbau is the Prewar (WW2) apartment and they are similarly sought after with many of the same features but those high ceilings in Berlin are amazing. Looking forward to you next apartment tour!

These apartments weren't so small in the 1940s. Usually they had 3-4 bedrooms, separate kitchen, bathroom and sometimes an extra room for a servant. Even in the rowing 20s these were the middle or higher class accommodations. That particular flat was probably divided after the war, when Berlin was just a pile of rubble and debris and the need for housing was great (please note that the district is the west part of the city, therefore its architecture was better preserved in the post war situation). The other option is that house was bought by a company, divided into smaller flats and prepared to be flipped. The way they "designed" that interior is a crime🙈.

Despite my critical comments I really like this guy. I've been to Berlin for a week. His videos are nicely done and uniquely straight forward, and the best are about things others might not think important enough, like the bike ride at Tempelhof (been there). He would be prime boyfriend material (but sadly, straight). However he is inexplicably naïve about some things as shown in the two recent apartment videos, despite scoring an awesome deal on his own apartment (another great video).

If you would not have said it was 42m I would have thought it is 80m or ,90m. Love the fact that it has a small dishwasher, and spaciouse counter kitchen and many outlets. I think they could have done more, or larger top cabinets in the kitchen. Love the lighting in the kitchen/living area, and bedroom. Not having an elevator is a downside for this kind of apartments. I absolutely love the two windows. Bathroom look nice and spacious as well, but the only part I don't like about is the glass wall. Bedroom was nice, I think I saw a small closet on the corner. Is it normal in Germany for not having closets? or not having a big closet. I guess because my comparison is US and my personal experienses on apartments and housing. I am used to seeing large closets even on one bedroom or even studios in California. You are explaining in detail and that is really good. I must say you are getting better in your videos. I hope now that lockdowns are lifted you and your girlfriend can show Berlin as well as cities around Berlin. Showing cities, foods, snacks, drinks, and etc........are always exciting lol... especially food. Keep up the good work. If you ever doubt that you are good at this or not, I can assure you that yes both of you are good and your videos are very watchable. I think adding more different contents will help your KZfaq grow. Looking forward to seeing more videos.

Hi my friend. Thank you so much for your kind comment and for taking the time to write. I'll do the same in return :) In Australia, we also have closets that are somewhat built into the room usually. In Germany, I guess it depends on the size of your house or apartment, but most apartment rooms I've seen are basic rooms that you need to furnish yourself. I love food as well, so I'll try to make more videos about foods that are unique and might not be what you typically see or know about :) stay tuned and stay healthy!

Too bad the designer didn't go for upper kitchen cabinets that actually have space in them with all that tall ceiling space and instead put style way over substance with that tiny strip of little cabinets. That "spacious" sink could not have been smaller or it would be a drinking fountain. An under-counter refrigerator? Yikes. Who needs a dishwasher that holds a couple dishes? I guess it's all fine with people taking it for a week or two. This apartment was probably originally a studio or far more likely is half an apartment or less. Various other designer stuff built in, like in the ("spacious" but actually tiny) bedroom. I guess there was all that bedroom furniture in the living room because it didn't fit in the bedroom. No balcony or patio. All this, not in central Berlin, 450 square feet and for only $335K. It's about ten times what it would have cost 15 years ago. If it wasn't a furnished short term apartment it would be less, but Berlin (like Brooklyn where I live, but much more so) is a lot more expensive than it used to be. Supply and demand. I assume that a buyer would continue to use it as a hotel room for tourists to justify the price.
@ExpatCaptures

Thanks for the comment. Spacious is all relative and what you think of it. We're not in America. A lot of Berliners would give their right arm for an apartment like that. Apologies that I'm not as critical as what you would like, but I'm trying to focus on the positives here.

Totally agree. RIP off pricing. €285,000 and NO oven? And a bar fridge. You’d have to be shopping every single day. And agree - there could have been shelves or cupboards on the wall. His own apartment that he took us on a tour in was nicer.

People buying apartments in high demand cities and then furnishing them and renting them short term (including often a few days) not only impacts the other actual residents in the building, but also all renters and buyers in the city by pricing up ALL apartments. You can earn multiples of the monthly rent or payment by AirBnBing an apartment. Everyone renting or buying in the whole city ends up paying for people like the owner of this apartment running it like a hotel room. Berlin should pass laws making this illegal. It is inexplicable to me that a guy like this does not seem to understand this.

@@ExpatCaptures The sale price reflects that is would be bought to be used as a hotel room, not a real apartment. Everything about it is also oriented to short term occupancy, not real living. Again, this use of apartments takes units off the market and drives up housing costs for everyone in Berlin. I don't understand why an intelligent thoughtful guy like you does not seem to understand this. Of course the company generously allowed you to do a video. It's free advertising.
