Have you ever wondered how the Bowers & Wilkins 705 S2 speaker is constructed? In this video I tear down a B&W 705 S2 and we examine the cabinet, drivers, and crossover. Next, I will put the drivers on the bench to measure their TS parameters and to also find out the port tuning of the cabinet. Let's see what you get for your $3000 from B&W...

Coming from the car audio industry with 10 years plus building different subwoofer boxes and door panels I'm getting more into home audio and build a few cabinets myself one thing I have to admit I love your channel I love the fact that you're breaking down what's inside not saying everybody got the talent to build but one thing's for sure this helps verify the things I am building and allow me to know my worth. Thank you for the up load. By the way I was going to buy some big stock of the same speaker local Best buy had glad i didnt make that decision.

It's a shame Best Buy didn't deliver what they promised because B&W does ( when it is not damaged, of course). As for value for the price, B&W is one of the company that's hard to beat. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for doing these tear down videos. I own a pair of 705 S2 and a pair of 705 S2 Signature bookshelf speakers. Both sets of speakers sound fantastic. The signatures have a richer and more controlled sound than the regular 705s. The only other difference between the two are the two premium finishes and the silver tweeter grill on the Signatures. The deep sparkly blue finish looks black in most lighting condition. So, not really worth the premium price. The real wood veneer finish probably is worth the extra money. I purchased both sets of speakers used. The 705s can be bright if you do not have tone controls or a separate EQ to tame them. The sound stage is huge, detail is unreal, and bass is good. I have a small 10" Martin Logan sub paired with my 705 Signature speakers. The integration is really good for my listening space. And, of course, the 705s will only get better when paired with better equipment and amplification. Regarding your comments about servicing the tweeter. You can service the tweeter at your own peril. B&W did not make the tweeter or tweeter housing service friendly for anyone who does not have their special, not for sale, tool kit. (AKA, the Apple way of building products) I successfully replaced a tweeter dome assembly in one of my speakers that suffered from both a dented dome and deformed dome ring. (Part of the peril of purchasing something used) The tweeter grill is unnecessarily hard to remove. And the tweeter unscrews from the inside of the tweeter housing. It can be removed but not with any tools that you will find off the shelf. I contacted B&W about purchasing a tool set. They sent me to their "repair" facility (phone number and website). The "repair" facility told me that they don't sell tool kits, rent tool kits, and don't repair speakers. My advice, don't remove the tweeter if the tweeter does not need to be removed or replaced. The same goes with removing the tweeter housing from the speaker body. Pause the video where the camera at the nut securing the tweeter housing and you'll see why. Finally, if you find the tweeter housing loose, then tighten the nut on the tweeter housing stem inside the speaker. I thought the tweeter mounting was broken on two of my speakers and it turned out that the nuts slipped and needed tightening. Sorry to hear that Best Buy blew it with shipping. I bought my 705 S2 from Best Buy as open box and they were in excellent condition at a price I could not pass up. I'm sure if you had a chance to listen to them you would have loved them. Especially with the gear in your room. Why better than what I have.

Hi, what are your thoughts on smps vs toroidal ampliers?
@generationbehindhifi
@generationbehindhifi 8 ай бұрын
I don't have a lot of listening experience between smps vs toroidal amplifiers so I'm probably not the best guy to ask. IMO I think smps amplifiers can be just as reliable and sound just as good as a toroidal amplifier when done right. It really boils down to what you're looking for in an amplifier. If you want an amplifier that is easy to move, then an smps amplifier is the way to go. My Rotel RMB-1575 has an smps power supply and puts out 500 watts in to 4 ohms and only weights 24 pounds!!!

Good video! It’s interesting to watch audiophiles being crazy about expensive cables and loudspeaker connectors, when the internal wiring does not only look generic, as that connector for the tweeter is everything but “audiophile”. 😊😉 That wouldn’t stop me from buying any loudspeaker that I love how it sounds, but I’m not a huge proponent of exotic cables either. It’s good to know that B&W didn’t cheap out on crossover parts, although it must be noted that the S2’s are _way_ too bright and not balanced sounding at all. In all fairness, B&W has the means to design any loudspeaker to sound the way they want, and this kind of sound that they went over their last designs is meant to win over the competition on the showroom floor, not at the buyer’s living room. B&W is far from being the only brand that’s playing that attention grabbing game with artificial tuning tricks, but what made B&W what is is today were much more balanced designs from the past. In that sense, if I had a pair of these speakers, I’d change the crossover or (most likely) go active with external DSP/Crossover and bi-amplification. I would have heard them anyway. 😉
@generationbehindhifi
@generationbehindhifi 8 ай бұрын
Thanks, MrRocktuga! Glad you liked the video! Yeah, I'm not one of those guys that purchases expensive cables. You get much more bang for your buck by putting that money into your amplifier, processor, or speakers! Good quality cables from BlueJeanCables is what I use or good quality OFC speaker cable. I don't recommend CCA cable at all! Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to listen to the 705 or any of the newer stuff from Bowers & Wilkins lately so I can't comment on how they sound, but it is disappointing to hear that they are tuned a bit bright these days. I really love the sound of the older B&W's from when I was selling them. They were great speakers back then and was kind of hoping they still had that same sonic signature as before. Now if you want to see a $800 speaker that sells for $2200, then I recommend you check out my look inside video of the Focal Aria 906! Yikes! That one surprised me!

Danny at GR Research opened up a $4000.00 pair of Revel bookshelves to find a 25.00 crossover. Truth is you cannot trust any manufacturer. They sure know how to make them pretty. Unfortunately that is their only priority. I owned the 600 series for years. Yes B&W has used metal dome tweeter's long as I can remember, definitely leaning on the bright side. I went from those to silk dome tweeter's in my EPOS Epic 2's...much much smoother and not fatiguing at all. Unless you are shopping a manufacturer's top speaker line, you can bet you would not approve where they skimped on parts. Know what is inside a speaker before you ever consider buying them. Or eliminate the risk and get a speaker kit from Danny. Quality parts throughout. imho Not all equipment is capable of showing us the difference in cables. That's why their are so many in denial about the importance of quality cables. Does not make them right...just exposes their equipment. I run a PS Audio stack, so I know. Audioquest Water XLR & Coffee USB. My reference cables forever. Mini computer source with upgraded power supply. (no brick switching PS)

So my experience with BB open box is this…most of the time the items are good. They state even if excellent condition that they could include nothing other than the item you’re buying. Not usually my experience. I’ve usually gotten all original items. I haven’t purchased speakers though. I have bought and returned a few receivers to try out along with a lot of cheaper items. One car amp a number of years ago. As for the B&W speakers. I’m 40. When I was 17/18, I got my first audio setup. I started with a Sony STR-DE935 receiver and a pair of 602 S2’s. I think it was about $1200 out the door with tax and speaker wire to have my first two channel setup…I added some other stuff temporarily for a 5.1 setup until I could afford used 601 S2’s and a CC6 S2.

$136 for the Mundorf EVO-SGO-4.3 Silver-Gold Oil MCap Supreme EVO (Sold individually) VS bulk price B&W pays. $40 for a good-quality Air Core Inductor (Red, wound coil part). The other two small, blue, rectangular parts - Sandcast resistors? Can't be very expensive, say $15/$20 each. Board, glue, bracket, screws and wires - $50-generously ----$532-generously in crossovers 6.5 inch drivers- $150 ea./ $300 for woofers ----- 1inch tweeters - $100 ea. / $200 for tweeters (VERY generously priced) MDF Box enclosures: $150/$150 finish ----- $300 speaker boxes ----- plus $50 tweeter enclosures/$100 for tweeter enclosures Acoustic fill, binding posts, trim rings / $300 per pair $1,732 per pair shipped ----- probably more like $1,000 to $1,200 per pair at the most, shipped to stores.

What about R&D cost?? Hours B&W staff put into designing drivers, cabinets & crossover values. Then the time put into putting that all together & changes that need to happen. Retail price of any speakers just don't come down to price of parts alone.

I think my videos speak for themselves and perfectly illustrate the differences in construction quality between these two $2,000+ speakers. For one, the woofers from the B&W are better damped, have lower inductance, and utilize a bigger motor structure than the ones used by Focal. When comparing the crossover networks between the B&W and Focal there just isn't any comparison between the two! B&W's use Mundorf capacitors (well respected cap manufacturer) whereas Focal uses generic poly caps made by who knows who. Even the air core inductors from the B&W's are a gigantic leap in quality vs the ones used by Focal. Construction quality on the cabinets are quite a bit different too. The B&W uses a center brace that ties all of the side walls together whereas Focal uses a single stick that ties the left and right side together. The front baffle on the B&W is 15% thicker than the front baffle on the Focals. I'm starting to wonder if you're watching the same videos that I am?
