I got this from a large UK supermarket chain called Sainsburys but hadn't got round to doing a test on it yet. Quite well constructed with LG cells, an unusual control PCB with a few tricky to trace components and a thermistor for battery temperature monitoring. Notable features are the decent control chip they seem to have used and the matching beefy inductor.
External cell capacity test is a respectable 6400mAh. (3200mAh per cell)
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-

This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

I think this might be the highest quality power bank I've seen taken to bits on this channel! Handles 2.5A without much sag? Thermistor for cell temperature protection? Some good quality cells? All in a nice relatively compact form factor? Color me impressed. Much different from the usual fare around here. Of course, it's nothing special compared to what is possible or should be done... but compared to what typically gets taken to bits on this channel? Yeah.

An interesting feature in this series of Duracell powerbanks is that they do pass-through -- you can charge the powerbank and power the load at the same time. Would have been nice to test the current limits in that mode.

I found it odd that a measly 5V power bank would have so much circuitry and a temperature sensor, it’s overkill plain and simple. But having passthru charging would explain the need for that that stuff or at least justify it more.

The inductor is used for both boost and buck (charging and discharging) using internal MOSFETs in synchronous dc-dc converters. The ADC is used for its fuel-gauge feature, and can be read from a microcontroller via I2C. A short button press turns on the circuit, long one turns it off. A double-press toggles a flashlight.

Inspired by your good self, when I tried to resurrect my Samsung phone (GT-B2710, not that ‘smart’ but very rugged) and noted the bulging battery pack, I did some disassembly. Sure enough, under the top is a circuit board with little electronic bits! Presumably charging control circuitry stuff..(my electrical knowledge is limited to a 12 month stint training as a BBC transmission engineer in the 90’s as a career break, before returning to medicine. Favourite transmitters were the BBC World Service array near Penrith, with a hall full of massive valve amplifiers. They carried some serious current. I have therefore opted to buy an OEM 1300 mAh replacement battery rather than a no name 750 mAh for 60% the cost.

I was thinking of making mine "user-replaceable", drilling a hole in the bottom of my notebook and then putting some spring loaded 18650 battery holders in there. As I have a LOT of 18650 cells, I could take some with me and replace them on-the-fly when they discharge, lasting all day long with battery charges. The problem is: These battery circuits have a memory and save how much capacity the batteries have left. This would mean if I put a single pair of almost dead batteries in there, it would say that I need to "replace the battery" and it would never recover with that same chip, even if I put good batteries back. Basically: The chip does planned obsolecence for you. Nice, huh? Damn.

The spiceyness of the jerky is from "Cajun". Cajun seasoning is an awesome seasoning as it has a link to acidity. The stronger the acidity of a dish, the spicier cajun gets. You can actually make dishes that taste cajun without tasting at all spicy, which is a unique and wonderful taste of it's own (think Arby's fries).

You can also find out if it has a step down circuit if you put your meter in series with the battery while charging. Is the batterie current higher than the USB current you have a step down converter. If the batterie current is lower oer almost the same its a linear regulator. I mean if you have the case open anyways than it makes sense to do so. If you dont want to touch the internals than the method with charging discharging is the way to go.

Capacity is strongly linked to the charge voltage accuracy. If it doesn't reach optimum voltage then it won't fully charge the battery. I would check the battery voltage during charge to see what it goes up to. They should all be using sub 1% tolerance voltage references. I'd test the batteries on a separate charge circuit which you use for capacity comparison tests.

You may notice that there are no rectifiers in the schematic, it must use three internal FETs as switches and synchronous rectifiers to form a Buck converter for charging and a boost converter for the 5V output. This is how it might achieve 97% efficiency although it still sounds very ambitious.

Would you be interesting in looking at a VOIP phone if we sent one in? I have a few Yealinks that did not come back on after a power outage. In total we lost about 30 phones, but the majority were taken back under warranty. The odd thing is, they continued to work until they were individually turned off. Once turned off they would not power back on.

At 4:39 ...I never said "I want you to stab the battery." Nevertheless I'm in for the duration of the video and will watch attentively. P.S. I'm from the future and on this very day you posted a awesome DIY power-bank explosion video. You must wait until 3-14-2021 to enjoy it.

In a way this is worth it just for the high current charge/discharge for other electronic projects, and the 3300mAh cells - as 18650 cells above 3000mAh are rather expensive. Those cells could be re-used in that "2 cell" (actually 4 cell) work style LED lamp if you don't have a use for them? As that would work nicely in there.

It's really pricey though. £24 on argos. I bought a "Bauhn" powerbank over a year ago from Aldi, it's 7800mah with two USB ports one standard at 1A the other for fast charging at 2.1 able to discharge both simultaneously too. The build quality is great, it has a torch, it has a 4 led battery read out, oh yes and it was £9.99.

If you think it's glued or ultrasonically welded, giving a plastic case a really sharp whack with the handle of a bigish screwdriver often breaks the bond.

I think you've missed in yoru calculations that the mAh value quoted is usually at the cell voltage, rather than at the boosted 5V for USB since the mAh of the cells is higher (at 3.2 to 4.2 volts) than the mah of the boosted 5V you get as output... using total energy in joules is a far better measure

this video gave me an idea... I have a Bluetooth speaker that doesn't want to charge, I have shorted it with a faulty cable, but everything else works fine, just the charging... I could scrap a double-cell battery similar to this one and use the circuit board to charge the batteries of the speaker ^^ it should work as long as the battery is 2S and its in series (because the batteryes of the speaker are in series. I think it matters)

Is monitoring the quiescent current the best way to check if that torch function had any effect? If it's just switching a port output from high to low with no load then nothing much will happen. Better to check the output pin voltage.

Did you see anything about "Qualcomm Quick charge" on the box or data sheet? It does some fancy negotiation for higher current (and voltage!) Which might explain why it's so... Calm about doing a mere 5v - and why it looks more exotic in design.

I don't think it has the quick charge feature.

Perhaps those two resistors make a voltage divider at the data lines to make some of the dedicated charging port controllers work at a particular charging scheme.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 5 жыл бұрын
The data lines go to the chip via two fuses and the chip seems to deal with the charging output indication.

The controller IC internally modulates DP and DM to follow Apple, Samsung, and BC1.2 charging methods... As mentioned in the video, they are likely just fuses to prevent fires when bad things happen.

Does it have some quick charge capabilities? Data pins are used for communication about voltage in QC.
@pigrew
@pigrew 5 жыл бұрын
@@josifvissarionovich5320 No quick charge, it only outputs 5V. Many devices limit themselves to 500 mA unless they get a signal from the USB power supply that it can output a higher current. This is usually called "fast charging". The signal is provided over DP and DM (like is done by quick charge).

I’m still surprised in how many devices (mostly Powerbanks and Battery-Paks though) these Cells are used. I’m fairly used to them as I use them for my e-Cig’s since years. But they actually quite expensive... well as long as you buy good ones

Based on the board marking of "FB1" I think the component "JR" is a jumper encased in a ferrite bead.

Interesting. I noticed that the main inductor is named "L2". So maybe this ferrite bead is our first inductor.

Would be cool to solder an LED on to see if lighting function still worked, or if the chip was programmed to disable that feature

Have you yet dissected powerbanks which accept or provider higher usb voltage for quick charge? Looks like this one does provide at least higher voltage when negotiated. But if there is no chip on the micro usb it won't be able to draw more. Would be nice to have an USB tester which can actually exercise QC.
