When you hear “Egyptian Pharaoh”, what image immediately comes to your mind? Probably a man wearing a blue and golden headdress, sitting on a throne surrounded by servants? Picturing a man would be accurate 95% of the time since very few females became pharaohs in all of Ancient Egypt’s 3,000-year history. To be precise, there were 7 female pharaohs among the 170 that ruled Egypt over time. One of those women was Hatshepsut, and how she came to power as a great Leader of Egypt is a rare story.

SUMMARY:
- In 1507 BCE, a girl was born, and she would be named "Foremost of Noble Women". You might know her as Hatshepsut. She was the daughter of Pharaoh Thutmose I and Queen Ahmose, his first and main wife.
- Hatshepsut’s half-brother Thutmose II officially became the new ruler of Egypt, and the two got married.
- The bright and tactful Hatshepsut, who probably felt that she was born to rule being the daughter and wife of two kings by now, was determined to get what was rightfully hers.
- But there was the problem of her primary competition. That was Thutmose III, the son of the deceased pharaoh and another wife of his.
- Hatshepsut took advantage of the situation and appointed herself his regent.
- She had a legend on her side. According to the myth, Hatshepsut was actually the daughter of Amun, that Egyptian deity I mentioned earlier.
- Hatshepsut might’ve been strong and powerful, but she clearly wasn’t a guy - legend has it that she was actually a very beautiful woman.
- At important public events, she wore men's clothes and a fake beard.
- The ruler focused more on developing her own country instead of expanding it by conquering new lands.
- The most impressive construction of Hatshepsut’s rule was the temple at Deir el-Bahari. This temple is considered one of the architectural wonders of Ancient Egypt, and it’s also where she was buried.
- Her prosperous reign lasted a little more than 2 decades until her death some 22 years after taking the throne.
- The name of the Queen was excluded from the list of pharaohs of Egypt, and her portraits were destroyed.
- But Hatshepsut was smart and she most likely expected something like this would happen. So, during her years on the throne, she managed to sprinkle reliefs and artwork of herself in lots of different places so that it’d be impossible to erase everything.

*1:* There are depictions of Nefertiti and Queen Nefertari in this video, even though this has nothing to do with them. *2:* According to Dr. Kara Cooney's book, she assumed the role of Egypt's pharaoh after 7 years of regency in order to protect herself- and her half-nephew/stepson- from other pretenders to the throne. *3:* Thutmose II married Hatshepsut in order to legitimize his ascension to the throne since he, unlike Hatshepsut, wasn't born to the Great Royal Wife of Thutmose/Djehutymes I. *4:* Hatshepsut allowed Thutmose III to live- something a usurper would *never* do. Moreover, she appointed him as the Commander of Egypt's army- and he made no effort to initiate a rebellion against her. If either of the two pharaohs felt any ill will towards each other, they wouldn't have done all this or rule together. *5:* It wasn't until the latter years of Thutmose III's reign that Hatshepsut's name was beginning to be erased. Had Thutmose III harboured grudges against her, he wouldn't have waited so long. It is possible that his son, Amenhotep II, ordered that her name be removed from all historical records so as to strengthen his claim to the throne as he was neither Thutmose III's first-born son nor the son of him and his Great Royal Wife.

So glad she was able to sprinkle her portraits everywhere to not be forgotten! Females have been silenced and erased in history often, as well as art history. Always told we're not worth as much as we would if we were simply born as a man. Anyway, I guess I look up to Frida Khalo amongst others, as she started and kept on painting during her many physical and marital misfortunes as an expression of her feelings and true self, and now she is so known and celebrated (after her death, yes, but still). She motivates me to push myself to express myself and be creative even when I'm in pain every day and also when I had to fight for my life 4 years ago 🙌🏻

Pharaoh Hatshepsut's story reminds me of Empress Wu Zetian of Tang China and Queen Chamathewi of Haripunchai (ancient Mon kingdom located in modern Thailand). They were all successful rulers of their places and time. They were all female "Kings." The other personal favorite female historical figure is Jeanne d'Arc. No need to put up description on this one. On a fun note, the other personal favorite, but FICTIONAL, female figure is Artoria Pendragon, the female version of King Arthur, imagined and produced by Japan. Heh...heh... ^^

I think that Hatshepsut was one of the most clever, bright, cunning and resolute women. I admire her for being so stubborn and tactiful. As for other worth mentiong female rulers Elizabeth I Tudor deserves to be remembered. She led her country through hard times and made the lives of her servants and citizens better:)
