** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
The second sudoku we've featured by Leonhard Kohl-Lörting is another stunner. It's called Saturn's Outermost Ring and Mark, who tested it. described it as "mad but undeniably brilliant!".
Play the puzzle at the following link:
sudokupad.app/...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. For each highlighted cell, if the grid is rotated by 180 degrees around the centre of the sudoku, the contents of the new and old cell have to sum up to 10. E.g. R2C1 and R8C9 have to sum up to 10. Digits in cages may not repeat and must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage (if given).
** OUR DECEMBER COMPETITION & SIMON'S BONUS SOLVES **
100 4x4 Snackdoku pack from the Skunkworks was released on 1 December as our monthly reward. Simon has recorded his solves of all 100 puzzles! Available now on Patreon...

Thank you very much for playing my sudoku. Pretty crazy that by constraining the perimeter, the sum of the upper and lower 5 cells equals the sum of the left and right 5 cells, right? You also did the break-in quite different than me while setting, but it led to the same result. Your way was a bit more "efficient". My goal was to make the player suspicious because of the cage layouts and then lead the solver towards the break in, and it worked. Thank you!

Amazing idea for the break-in. Not easy for me to figure it out, but eventually I found it. I feel the huge amount of time I consumed in that search was well spent. That feeling measures pretty well how much I loved your puzzle, from start to end. The logic you used after that beautiful break-in was equally beautiful. Thank you very much for being such a genius constructor 👏👏👏👏👏

"Let's make this cell red, just for a moment." Simon then of course leaves it red for the rest of the solve. I wish I had Simon's ability to not be distracted by superfluous coloring during my own solves. 😂

Simon and I would make a great team. He does all the mastery work of figuring out the hardest stuff, and idbe the one pointing out the simplest stuff he likes to miss like putting a 5-9 pair in a row that already has a 5 :-).

And then immediately afer he misses the 8 looking at the 78 pair in box 4 which resolves the 12 cage! He correctly deduced that the 12 cage is probably the next place he should investigate, and then neglects to actually investigate. It's all in good fun, though; I would never have understood how to break into the puzzle.

I got stuck, got to the point in the video where SET got mentioned, paused and went back to it, and that reminder was all I needed. I ended up using a different choice of SET (probably less efficient lol). I took c3-7 and r3-7 and deleted the middle 5x5 to get four regions of 10 cells around the outer sides. The top and bottom pair are easy to calculate as a total sum of 97, meaning the left-and-right groups of 10 sum also to 97, and then you can deduce the 1-3 pair in box 6 by eliminating 93 value from the other cells. This method didn't immediately give me the 3, but it did place the 1-3 pair in box 7, and that put the 79 pair in box 3, and then the 19 cage sorts out the box 6 pair, and after that it pretty much follows the path Simon took, modulo a lot of wracking my brain over possible contents of the 27 cages lol.

I can never spot SET, so the best I was able to do on this before looking at Simon's solve was notice that the digit r1c7 was in the 10 cage. And then because of the perimeter rule, it meant that the other digit in that cage must be the same as the digit in r9c3. This also meant that r8c9 was one of those two digits. I kept trying to find a route forward from there because it felt to me like it had to be the intended path, but there was nothing else useful I managed to get out of continuing on that path.

I finished in 267 minutes. I do not think I found the break-in. I did discover that r2c8 and r8c2 had to sum to 13. I also saw that r2c1 and r8c9 were powerful on the rest of the puzzle. I could see that some cages affected other cages, but I couldn't see the break-in. I pretty much had to cycle through the possibilities of r8c9 to see if I could spot the pattern. Most failed pretty early. Some stuck around a while. I finally was able to rule out every single one but 4 in r8c9. That finally did it. I'm disappointed in myself that I couldn't find the break-in, but I am excited to see the proper way it should be done. Great Puzzle!

Instead of doing the math on the two sets of cages to get the subtotals for the subsets in columns/rows 2 and 8 (Simon's green and purple), I added the outer pairs of cells to both sets, since this was adding 10 to both the green and purple sets, and keeping the equivalence going. The difference between the cage totals 54 and 57 gave the same 1,2 pair as Simon found. I guess it was the same ultimately, but it felt like it extended the SET relationship slightly further. Excellent puzzle.

Very nice puzzle. I got further before resorting to SET, so I was able to make a lot of headway once the 12 pair came to light. I started out considering the 10 cage in box 1 and labelled them A and B. By sudoku plus some geometric constraints, I was able approximately place A and B around the grid, and AB was echoed at the end of R8. This meant that once the 9 cage in box 1 was known, AB had to be 46. Apart from some epically bad scanning, (yes, I was shouting along with everyone else), it was a good solve today.

Honestly, I hate so much those type of puzzles where you have this very, very hard problem at the very start, which is almost impossible if you don't have like at least few years of sudoku solving experience, and then it just goes so easy, that you basically can consider the puzzle done after you solved that single problem.

@@rentalcustard yeah, I wouldn't use the word "hate" if I could just avoid them. But I see short solve time, like 35 minutes in this case, I think that it won't be a hard puzzle, and then waste alot of time trying to just start the puzzle, because I don't know some specific trick, or because I don't have enough experience in sudoku solving to see something that will help.
