Moonshine = Homemade whiskey. It's unlawful to produce in the United States. Laws vary by country. This story explains why. Do not recreate what this person did. The purpose of this video is to tell a real story and educate the dangers of home distillation. Real events occurred 31 Dec 2012 - 09 Jan 2013.

Chubbyemu I think the same thing happened to me after drinking someone's homemade moonshine. I have been suffering from mental health ever since even though they say my mental health is fine. After looking at my brain they say it's in beautiful shape. I've been to the doctors over 10 times but none of which thought It could have been the moonshine. Tired of no results I spend my days dealing with this issue unresolved.

2l of moonshine at 80% alcohol is 1.6l of pure alcohol. If that entire amount was to end up in your blood, and we assume a blood volume of 6l, that just doesn't work. You'd end up with a blood alcohol % of >12%, with the deadly BAC being measured in decimal percentages. Using a BAC calculator, he still gets a BAC of >2% which should have outright killed him. He should have been dead at 0.5%, so it's a miracle that he even survived the ethanol. WTF?

My grandfather's brother got drunk on moonshine at a party when he was 16. This was back in the late 50s. He had permanent brain damage and never really recovered. He had to live at home with his parents until his death in his 30s. He died when I was a small child but I remember how he would walk in circles in the yard while talking to himself. He was a smart kid from what I heard growing up. It's a shame.

In my country, Hungary, distilling pálinka from fruits is a deeply rooted tradition, and in smaller quantities it's legal. But due to it being an important tradition, practically everyone knows that the first distillate is poisonous, even people who never participated in distilling, and it's also easy to find reliable information about proper procedure. So thankfully accidents are very rare.

That's a really interesting thought. Both "extreme" ends of the spectrum are safe - no homemade distillation at all, and so much homemade distillation that proper procedures and the dangers that come with their absence are common knowledge - but not in the middle, where there is enough homemade distillation for cases of accidental poisonings to happen, but not enough for the dangers of it to be commonly known. Thanks for sharing, that was a very interesting thought to have. ^^ Take care of yourself, and be well

It is called head and tail. One have to remove the first and the last batch of destill. But, undistilled alcohol like vine and beer has the same amount of methanol per percent, and that is never removed.

My mother grew up in postwar Japan. She came from a line of sake Brewers on both sides of her parents’ families. Sake is Japanese wine brewed from fermented rice. Siri calls the dire situation following Japan’s defeat in World War II. She was in her late teens, working as a clerk. On the black market, people used to obtain methanol from hospitals, and drank that to satisfy their liquor cravings. Methanol has the side effect of causing blindness. Thank you for illustrating in detail the danger of methanol poisoning, no matter what its source.

Where I come from we have an age long tradition of making our national drink at home. It needs to be double-distilled as the first batch is a min of 80% alc and is typically used only as rubbing alcohol. I remember my family telling us when my sister and I were young that if you drink the first distilled batch or too much distilled alcohol you would go blind. I always took it at face value and have been mostly careful with home-distilled stuff, but I never knew how or why you could go blind from it, until I saw this episode. One learns something new every day
@redrust3
@redrust3 Жыл бұрын
@@Enjyu_666 interesting. Where are you from? I was born and raised in the US. Some people make their own beer at home from different grains. Others make wine from grapes and other fruits (peaches). Corn is used in moonshine, popular in the middle of our country. When I visited Bulgaria with my classmate and his Bulgarian wife, her parents offered rakiya, a peach brandy. Not sure how you get rubbing alcohol for consumption. Methanol has one carbon. Ethanol used for consumption has two carbons. Isopropanol, sold as rubbing alcohol, three carbons, is as poisonous as methanol. How do you make yours?
@Enjyu_666
@Enjyu_666 Жыл бұрын
@@redrust3 I am from Bulgaria :) and of course I was talking about rakia(or rakiya). It's traditionally made from grapes or plums, but any fruit will do really, I hope you enjoyed it. The distillate from the condensed steam is always separated from the rest of the rakia (because of the methanol) and often, later on a small quantity of it is added back in, before the following distillation. The rest is kept as rubbing alcohol and is not meant for consumption, usually labeled and kept in the medicine cabinet of the household. But lack of a drink or money for it, has dictated many alcohol addicted people to drink the distillate instead of alcohol, I'm guessing as many have fallen victim to it's toxicity, the "if you drink too much you will go blind" belief was born and is still told to children now, to scare them out of excess drinking later in life. In Bulgaria rubbing alcohol is not sold, the byproduct distillate from brewing rakia is used, it's horrendous in smell and feel, but works miracles in the right quantities. On a separate note, it was really interesting reading about your mom's story. I have a completed sake master class and have studied the history of sake, but I had never heard of people drinking methanol instead of alcohol and tbh it puts me to shame😰I could have made sake enthusiasts much more appreciative of it if I knew this and had incorporated it into my story.

One of the first things to exit the still is methanol, which can make you blind. After the methanol stops coming out, you still have bad flavors. So, if you cut the distillate well enough to not make it taste horrible, it won't make you blind. But for anyone in a country where it's legal, they'll know to look up the correct method anyway. It's not as hard as this guy makes it look.

It is not close, it is multiple times higher than that and it is a 100% certain he didn't drink even close to that amount (unless he vomited back most of it immediately after drinking it). The "world record" for drinking was done by Andre the Giant who was a massive alcoholic, and 520 lbs. He drank 139 beers in 6 hours (not in 2 hours), which is equivalent to 2,2 l of 80% alcohol, normal humans not even drinking champions come close to that and survive. No one drinks this amount of alcohol not even in drinking contests, and death cases still happen there. I am not talking about normal humans, the most badass massive drinkers couldn't handle that amount in 2 hours without dying. Moreover, nobody fact-checked his story (you cannot reverse engineer the amount of alcohol consumed from blood tests), and that's a fcking certainty, that nobody remembered anything about the party even if they "only" drank a third of the stated amount. The only thing he could know (if he wasn't lying for bragging rights), that 2liters of his moonshine was consumed, spilled and/or flushed during the night, by the whole group.

Just because the average would die to having something doesnt mean someone doesnt have a abnormal ability to counter act said thing. If the story is bull shit then that means once 1 person gets sick, it would continuously spread across the world, and everyone would be infected. This would cause a cycle of of people getting sick more and more often due to more and more people int heir area becoming sick with that strain of flu and you would never have a cure or treatment for it. Thats why there is a word called Immune, some people are Immune to small pox, H1N1, Anthrax and many other poisons and sicknesses and thats how you find cures and treatments. Hands up. When I did a PhD in Chemistry, I had a colleague who produced moonshine from fermented orange peel. However, she/we distilled the product carefully through a long fractionating column, throwing away the early distillate and only collecting that which was at a steady 78 degrees. It was then diluted 1:3 with water, and was delicious. Probably purer than spirits off the market shelf. I think the main reason why home distilling is not permitted is because it denies government tax revenue. It is easy to make one's own liquor, just do it right.

This is probably going to get buried in the comments, but what's interesting is that I remember a story told by my high school chem teacher when we were learning about alcohols. It's possibly an urban legend, but she told us that at our school, a long time ago, the janitors used to get drunk (after school hours) off of the alcohols brought in to the science labs. Back then, the school used to only have ethanol, so they'd basically drink just diluted ethanol marked as "alcohol". Then some time later the school was able to afford different types of alcohols, so they started getting "methanol", "ethanol", "propanol" etc. The janitors didn't know what was what and they just thought it was all alcohol so they grabbed the first container labeled "methanol". They all started feeling very ill soon after, and 2 of the 3 janitors decided to stop. The 3rd janitor went back to the shelves and decided he'd try the next container instead - ethanol. And it was this that saved his life - the other 2 janitors died, but because the 3rd one went back to get ethanol, he managed to survive. I was thinking about that story as I was watching this vid, and even if it was a fake story, I could kinda tell where chubbyemu's story was headed - use ethanol to neutralise methanol poisoning - which is kinda cool :D

To anyone curious, this wouldn't happen during standard fermentation in products like homemade wine or beer (3-22% ABV). Methanol is made in all alcohol but without distillation, the concentration is not high enough to cause toxic effects and the presence of ethanol further reduces methanols toxicity by occupying the livers active sites. You can drink/produce homemade alcohol relatively safely, just don't distill it without propper training and licensing.
@deanmerritt5893
@deanmerritt5893 6 ай бұрын
In reality, mashes made with grains contain very little methanol, and washes made with sugar only have little to no methanol produced, now use fruit and you`ll get more methanol but you can remove it. The cases that make the news more often than not can be attributed to someone knowingly contaminating the liquor with methanol to make more volume. Come taste my homemade alcohol and you`ll find its very clean and tasty.

imagine having to drink poison to go blind from lack of atp in the eyes.... this comment was brought to you by the LHON mutation gang (mine hasn't activated yet though, and it might never, so I currently have normal vision.) Lebers hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) Is a type of blindness due to a rare mutation (around 1/18500 for the mutation) in the mitochondrial dna. if you have the mutation, and are biologically male, you have around a 50%* chance of going blind (normally between the ages of 15-35) but you will NOT pass it on to your children. if you have the mutation and are biologically female you have around a 15%* chance of going blind (normally between the ages of 15-35, however it is more likely to be later in females) but you will have a 100%** chance of passing on the mutation to your biological children. there are multiple of these mutations, the most common being the G11778A, G3640A, and the T14484C. The vision loss is permanent once it has started*** *these are the odds for the G11778A mutation, as it is the most common mutation. the T14484C mutation has lower odds, and the G3640A mutation has higher odds of going blind (guess which mutation I have lol.) *assuming fully average person, because things like smoking, drinking, and being on hrt can affect it, a biological female on testosterone (such as if they are trans) would have odds probably closer to 50% (guess who's also a fucking trans man lol.) **it is technically possible for the faulty gene to correct itself due to a random mutation that cancels it out, but this would be incredibly rare. ***partial vision recovery has been reported in the T14484C type in some people.

Seeking606 I have a college buddy who is a doctor, super smart, blew thru a double biology/chemistry degree I undergrad partying her behind off, still got awesome grades. I called her after she got into medical school her message said, "Hi, this is Nellie, if you are dead or on fire, leave a message, I might call you back. To everyone else, I am in medical school and I am STUDYING! LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!", I laughed so hard, finally talked to her, she said she just couldn't articulate how hard her classes were and how she had to learn how to study as well, it was kicking her butt. That's a good thing, but as she said, you know what they call the person that graduates med school at the bottom of their class? Doctor. Which is kind of scary too! 😨😁

Med school is definitely hard, but only the very best doctors know all this stuff. Most doctors would just remember (or not) the treatment. They wound send the blood for testing, the medical laboratory scientists (MLS) would return the results, and if they see methanol poisoning is the case, they know what treatment to give. Also, you have to remember that doctors study this stuff since before they start medical school. The majority of this stuff is "basic" high-school stuff. Or at least it is in my country.

So, this might be a myth. But my dad used to work as a police officer in Sweden back in the 60/70's. And he told me that some alcoholics would actually drink wood alcohol, i.e methanol on purpose. Since as soon as the hospital staff learned that they had wood alcohol poisoning, they would feed them regular alcohol to combat it. Getting them drunk in the process.
