I don't spend much time thinking about him personally, but millions of people I've seen in China, in the bigger cities, they don't seem to be able to relax or be authentic. That's what bothers me. The older generation is fine, for them the hard times are behind and now, in the 1980s, 1990s 2000s time of reform and opening up, life is good and it's time to relax. But for their sons, it's a serious battle for something, more money, and they're unable to be authentic or relax, and I can't enjoy life being around them, which is now the majority of working age population in the big coastal cities. This tension is not pleasant. I'd much rather enjoy spending time with the older folks in the small towns where some culture remains, and local flavour

People told me my whole life to chill out and stop acting like an old man all responsible and serious, and now I have to tell that to thousands of people around me because they're creating a life that isn't beautiful or fun, it's just stressful. They should refuse to participate in society, just do nothing, no marriage, no house, no car. Oh wait, the younger generation, their kids, are already doing that, the Gen Z. So the grandkids and grandparents are alright. You remember that jolly older generation that made the vibe so good? So authentic and heart warming? It seems fewer and fewer people remember.

The cringe is not the delusional leader, the real cringe is the brainwashed people who defend them like they're gods. How badly brainwashed must an individual be to wholeheartedly believe that they must under all costs defend this leader that is basically running the country into the ground. It amazes me how ridiculous people can be towards leaders who are clearly psychotic and belong in an asylum. Before Xi you could understand defending the previous leaders, because the country was economically sound, people were benefitting from leadership even though it was still authoritarian. But this leader is destroying the economy and everyone who challenges him, he is doing nothing for the people or the country, so the loyalty makes no sense. Unless the system is brilliant at finding narcissists and cruel people to serve the leader. Whatever the case it shows a society crumbling.

Not really. Despite what many believe most Chinese emperors had actually very limited power, deliberately so, due to the various factions of the imperial court, any one of which who would be the real power at that time. Often it was the empress or dowager empress's faction, who only got that position due to family connections at court to begin with, but then often would use her position to raise her family members to high court and ministerial positions that was the greatest issue. And no, often their interests were not aligned with the throne or the emperor. Moreover, it is something of a Confucian stereotype and cliché to blame the last emperor of a dynasty for moral turpitude every time it falls- because due to Confucian thinking an upright and moral emperor makes good judgments, has good advisors- so the dynasty wouldn't fall- so if it falls the emperor was at fault. While scholars knew the reality of their court politics and often denounced what was happening- they were Confucians who still maintained the myth of the emperor as the ruling and moral center of the empire, when in reality he was often relegated to being a ceremonial figurehead controlled by everyone around him.

Theres a yellow line on the ground outside that gate in Beijing. Or there used to be, anyway. One night, the first time I was in Beijing, I didnt realise it was there so I crossed it to try to read my map under a street light - which is on the other side of the line. This was before maps on smartphones. As soon as I crossed that line I got absolutely swarmed by ununiformed guys who surrounded me, screaming and pointing at the line. When I stepped back over it they all immediately shut up and turned away from me. It was kind of like in a video game when all the enemies suddenly de-aggro. They never actually said anything - or nothing that I could recognise as language with my rusty chinese, anyway. They just screamed and yelled. They never touched me either, maybe because Im a big laowai - I dunno, but it was weird. This happened 20 years ago when things were a bit more civilised in China, even though it was national holiday week and Id just come from the flag lowering ceremony in Tiananmen square, where I got a first hand look at how brutally the plainclothes squads clear the chinese people from their own national square after the flag is gone, although, again, I was left alone by the goon squads. Interesting aside. When I was there that gate had two PLA soldiers on it, complete with AK47s with chromed bayonets etc. They saw what happened but they didnt make an aggressive move towards me. That video suggests the PLA guards are no longer on that gate. One point about people who call themselves emperor in China - all of the dynasty changes have been the result of warlords taking over after destroying the previous dynasty. Theres nothing to really stop Xi fostering a dynasty in China, as the Kims did in north korea. Interestingly, I believe a lot of the Xi heirs have been western educated, but, on the other hand, I believe Jong un also had some sort of education in europe and that hasnt stopped him fostering his dynastic dictatorship.

Well, the official proceedings may be boring but there would be fringe benefits, like being "present" at the roll call for example. That is always best. Then there is the window dressing necessary for the masses in your province to read the posts & see that you are involved & "business is being done, plus the invite to a big feast after all the dust has settled, for the believers because naturally, they could not be sent away hungry after all that clapping. 🤗🤗

Great video David. I think you should drink tea while doing these videos. It would add a unique character to vids. Then we can move on to you eating, like conversation over dinner after a day at work. 😊

I like this idea…if you can keep a natural pacing as you sip, I think it would add character. Although, by the same token, if done wrong it can be off-putting. No one wants to hear slurping.
