Honestly, I think I'd prefer a good OLED with 800p over another LCD with better res. Better yet, do it like Nintendo and take advantage of those big bezels to make the OLED screen a bit bigger than stock too. I doubt that is even possible, but if it is, I'd much prefer it. Having a Steam Deck with an 800p OLED 7.5" screen would be neat.

Actually it's better to buy this when changing the entire shell for steam deck, so the old screen can be a backup and minimize the risk of breaking your original screen. So just remove everything from the old steam deck except the screen and just migrate everything to new custom shell and new screen. Hitting 2 bird with 1 stones, so it's much much easier for someone without any experience with fear of breaking the original screen

Another use case for it is if you, like me, play most games at 960x600, in order to improve performance/battery life, as that would make nearest neighbour scaling perfect. Right now, games look a little fuzzy at 540p/600p, due to scaling to 720p/800p.

Interesting video, Taki. I think the real advantage with the DeckHD screen would be running at 600p and scaled up. With perfect pixel doubling / scaling, this should allow you to get really great performance and better visuals (400p is way too low a starting point, 600p should be just barely acceptable for AI scaling like FSR). I think $99 is a good price for this. Now I just need someone I can pay to do this and a shell swap for me. 😅

Your video has helped me to pump the brakes a bit and wait to see what the community and "market" does when it comes to this mod. I think I'm also just so dang happy with my Deck as is (Cryo, Smokeless Overclock, PTM7950, JSAUX RGB Backplate, 1TB SSD) that I now don't see a need for the screen upgrade, especially with my ROG Ally sitting right next to it. I'll still consider this upgrade for later down the line, but for now, I'll just wait.

This is a cool option for people who want the higher resolution display, but in my opinion, that 800p display is the special sauce for the deck. Makes it to where the APU doesn't have to work as hard to play games, therefore improving performance and/or battery life. Personally, like many others, I'd prefer an 800p OLED drop-in, or a better quality 800p display over a higher-res screen.

Sadly too many strings attached for me. I was really looking forward to more color and resolution given the types of games I play on Deck. I was the def within target audience. But they were originally advertising in the 90's before dropping to that 87%. Which, cool of them to be honest about the panels they ended up with but the leap ended up less. The loss of contrast, brightness and the whites hurts big time too. The gap ended up way more narrow. Too narrow. Then the BIOS stuff is rough. Understandable it is needed, cool they made a mostly seamless solution, but it needs to be open source full stop. Which they have yet to commit to last I heard. I don't want to rely solely on them to be around in perpetuity to always update it. I went from chomping at the bit back on announcement to lukewarm and likely spending that 100 elsewhere. Still a neat project. Cool to see they're pushing hard on the development end to get the most out of it. But it just didn't quite make it to the moon in the end.

What “source” are you expecting. They are hacking valve’s bios. Like they can tell you where hex edits should go for a particular bios version. But then valve updates and they have to hunt for new locations again. Fingers crossed that steamos 3.5 is the solution, with it looking more hardware agnostic in many ways.
@schlittytube

@@FoxbatStargazer Fair enough. Hadn't heard it explained/framed in those terms. Perhaps they should explain it the same if it's accurate to the situation. Prior they've said they 'haven't decided' or at best are 'aiming to' when the open source question was asked. Obviously the dream solution is for Valve to just open it up on their end but as Taki said in the video; not something you should flat out bank on.

Exactly. Valve designed the entire Steam Deck, obviously they would’ve chosen all the components carefully so upgrading the screen like this is just dumb as it messes up the equilibrium between all the components. Upgrading the joysticks to Hall Effect joysticks is a better mod than this screen replacement because it’s easier and it’ll help your joysticks last longer/have better accuracy. This screen mod is too difficult and you won’t notice any difference unless you have another Steam Deck right next to it to compare with. It’s a very silly mod.

I got my deck a few days ago with the new refurbished program and i was a bit worried about the screen since so many people complained about the colors etc. But I don't even think you need vibrant deck to make it looks good. I bet most people are simply used to the amoled screen on their phone so the Deck screen lock "bad" in comparison. But personally i have no problem with it. So i'm not really sold on this mod. If anything i'd rather have an 800p oled screen with a lower power consumption. EDIT: again, for those saying "if you compare it to another device..." yeah, sure. But you don't have that problem on a normal gaming scenario when you are obviously only watching at the deck's screen. p.s. If you think that is a "bad screen" you have never seen a bad screen lmao.

the stock screen is pretty bad compared to just about anything else out there in a mobile device but its not offensively bad, you can play games and be happy enough, thing is though if you look at any other display side by side the flaws become obvious, like the deck cant display deep reds at all, they always appear orange and next to a display that can show deep reds its quite an eye opener, just one example. i think everybody would prefer oled, I use a LG C1 oled for my pc and its awesome, HDR is second to none on an oled and dark room gaming is next level but the problem is on a portable device dark room gaming is only one scenario and Oleds lack brightness for outdoors, i have also witnessed first hand burn in on my pc display and i have only owned it just under 2 years and in that time ive taken massive measures to prevent it and still have spotted it with certain colors. Nah... id be quite happy with a standard LCD aslong as its a quality one on the next steam deck. What i do completely disagree on is sticking with 800p resolution, i have a deck and rog ally side by side and there are many examples i can point out where text is blurry or outright partially missing on the steam deck due to the resolution while on the ally its crystal clear and intact at 1080p... i have no issue at all with higher res screens on these portable machines, on newer games you have options to reduce it if framerate isn't there right but on indie titles which these things are perfect for the resolution and framerate is king, hades on the ally is a totally different game at 1080p 120hz flat compared to 800p 60hz on deck and the deck could absolutely push that game at over 800p and over 60 so its a shame. So for those reasons id say this deckHD upgrade is more than worth it for the resolution alone, that instantly makes the 5000 plus indie games available on steam over the last few years crisper and nicer to look at. I wont be getting one for my deck, but not because its not a good upgrade but because its not good enough so why bother when i have the ally, needed to be higher framerate, better contrast and brighter and then it would be excellent upgrade but i certainly think if people dont think the resolution is worth it im not with them and they should get out and try these higher res devices before assuming its not worth it.

I played the rog ally a little and you can see the difference with a better screen. For some reason a slightly glossy screen protector for the deck made it look slightly better but the screen is underwhelming. You just get used to it. If you have a display that has more than 60hz, then the VRR option will become available for you via Wibdows display settings. At least, that's exactly how it is for me Steam Decc should only have 60hz. If you connect the Decc to a display that has more than 60hz, the VRR option should automatically become available. since i first heard about this product, i became interested in it. the upgrade sure looks nice, but i'm not sure the extra money and effort will be worth it, especially since i now use my retroid pocket more than my deck. but i'll keep this in mind in case i decide to upgrade later on.

Thanks for this. I was really looking forward to this screen but was very afraid of the fps drop being way more noticeable than the difference in resolution. You mentioned about a 15 fps drop in Spiderman but didn't tell us any comparison numbers for the other titles you showed. Were those games dropping similarly in performance?

Very in depth testing and I geek out over this type of stuff. I appreciate your honest review. It's good to know the pros and the cons. The biggest issue is that it's not yet supported in the official BIOS and requires its own modified BIOS.

My biggest problem is that that higher res kills fps and many games already have to use fsr to get decent performance, and pretty much all the color changes can be achieved simply by installing vibrant deck. If you already need a screen replacement then sure why not but otherwise its just not worth the money and hassle, especially with the bios that seems really annoying

The most sensible Deck screen update, in my opinion, is neither a panel upgrade (like OLED, although i'd like to have that if possible) nor high res/refresh (deck can't drive that anyways). The best thing to do is to add a 24-60hz freesync. Even 48-60hz can do a lot of help as deck in many situation, while not powerful enough to do a 60fps lock, can usually hit around 50 fps.

How does it feel with all games in FSR mode? I believe it can benefit from higher panel resolution while still rendering 800p or 600p video? I already play most of my games with FSR just for added FPS.

Very interesting. I'm curious if using FSR 1/2 or Xess in supported titles has an apprciable improvement since the native resolution is higher. For example, FSR peformance on my 4K monitor with my PC looks completely useable in Resident Evil 4 remake because it's pulling up from 1080p. Performance mode FSR is too low quality on Steamdeck's 800p display because it's pulling up from 400p and not a lot of detail can be recreated in the reconstruction. Cheers!

@Greydawg
@Greydawg 10 ай бұрын
What's interesting to me is increasing the resolution to 1080p *often doesn't reduce performance on the Deck.* Marvel's Midnight Suns, for example, doesn't run great on the Deck, but in docked mode at 1080p it's a near-identical frame rate as 800p. Seeing as the 1080p resolution is the outlier for the DeckHD's use, it's a worthwhile note for many expecting a significant performance drop.

Somehow I assumed the screen would be larger. Also, if I'm being honest, I don't really care that much about extra resolution for a screen this size. I'd be happy with an 800p OLED screen which had a larger display area. The screen has huge bezels which could be reduced, just like how the Switch OLED did.

Overall not worth the effort, price and the need to flash their bios for most people, maybe to repair a faulty screen. I also like screens that don't exceed SRGB 100% which can leads to super exaggerated colors (unless they support HDR or has SRGB clamp mode), so the overall image looks decent to me.

25fps being good enough for Nintendo had me dying LOL 🤭 🙏🙇Greatly appreciate the efforts you put into this video showing us the pros and cons. Personally I think the custom Bios is a deal breaker for me. not that it's too much effort but the possibility of it breaking later if it isn't updated. that being said I also think the other points about color accuracy and brightness are also not worth the trade off and hassles involved. For others it may be a great alternative and upgrade. it's all about use-case.
