President Minouche Shafik delivered a message from Columbia’s Morningside campus to students on Friday, May 3.
“Every one of us has a role to play in bringing back the values of truth and civil discourse that polarization has severely damaged,” she said. “Here at Columbia, parallel realities and parallel conversations have walled us off from other perspectives. … Working together, I know we can break down these barriers.
The issues that are challenging us-the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, antisemitism, and anti-Arab and anti-Muslim bias-have existed for a long time. And Columbia, despite being a remarkable institution, cannot solve them singlehandedly. What we can do is be an exemplar of a better world where people who disagree do so civilly, recognize each other’s humanity, and show empathy and compassion for one another.
We have a lot to do, but I am committed to working at it, every day and with each of you, to rebuild community on our campus.”

How sad, with the role that you are blessed with, can respond with such little insight. Your statement, written no doubt by someone else, are full of platitudes. This is a complex situation and your empty words fail to recognize that complexity. A nice smile and a surplus of hand gestures won't solve the situation you need to address with intelligence not empty statements. From listening to you, and listening to my daughter, a student at Columbia, I now understand you are not up to this. Do yourself, Columbia and it's brave students, a favor and step down. Today.

President Shafik, you are put in a hard place to protect free speech AND fight hate speech, to allow students to voice their opinions AND protect the wellbeing of your campus. I feel for your tough position where (in this case) middle ground means you cannot win from either side. Its hard to ignore the haters, but know they are not the ones who support your integrity or your responsibility as President. May your inner strength grow from all this.

I wrote to Minouche onJanuary 25, 2024 to urge dismissal of Columbia students who used the chemical weapon 'skunk' against peaceful protestors.I never got an answer and understand nothing was done. Columbia failed to lead, failed to provide a structure for protest. It instead outlawed peaceful groups and failed to adequately denounce a criminal act. This dull and overall egregious approach at the very beginning led to student unrest that could have been prevented as it was at other schools, for instance, Brown. I include the relevant text of my letter below. Minouche also fails in this vid to address the valid and central students' call for university divesting from supporting the Israeli/US war machine. I participated in anti-apartheid protests as an undergrad; our school divested and apartheid ended. These students (or shall I say 'customers') of Columbia deserve an answer on divestment, not just silence. Kudos to student protesters and shame on the 'grownups' who appear more concerned about their own enrichment and bloated endowment than free speech and the ideals of humanism. Here is the text of my Jan 25, 2024 letter: As a SIPA alum with strong Jewish ties, I was shocked to read (in The New York Times) about the treatment of peaceful protestors calling for Columbia to divest from investments in Israeli companies etc until an end to what South Africa, human rights organizations and the international community at large are identifying as a 'genocide' against the people of Gaza. I urge full investigation, dismissal and prosecution of those who employed 'skunk' -- a chemical weapon with potential long-term health impacts -- against fellow students on the steps of Low Library this past week. This act crossed a very real line and must be strongly denounced by the entire university community. I urge you to allow such protests and forego this 'banning' of mainstream groups including Jewish Voices for Peace - a peaceful group that represents the views of a growing number of American Jews who do not identify or ally with the state of Israel. I believe Columbia banning such groups and denying normal support for such 'free speech' student-led actions led to this egregious situation where a chemical weapon was used against peaceful protestors. I further urge Columbia, as occurred under South Africa's apartheid, to join with other universities to divest of Israeli investments until a peaceful solution brokered by an international, hopefully UN-led coalition, is agreed to by both 'sides'. I acknowledge Israel's right to exist just as I acknowledge the need for a Palestinian state. The current leaders' of both should be thrown out as they are responsible for feeding an unnecessary and larger regional conflict. The US and Europe created this festering wound and must take the lead to start a healing once and for all. The role of Columbia and other universities is to lead by example -- facilitating civil debate through structured dialog and diplomacy despite high passions all around. This is the way of peace. ###

Educational Spaces are for learning. These CANNOT become political hotspots which does not take time in becoming infernos, tornadoes, volcanoes.....all of that which destroys the purpose of the Educational Space, for which parents sacrifice their savings to send their children to learn in an environment which promotes discipline and not mindlessness in the name of freedom. Education is costly, and therefore it's a Business, and it is the duty of this Business, this Institution (or any Institution) to NOT allow it's Teachers and Students, respectively, to engage in activities that are not meeting the objectives of the Institution, within the premise and a radius of the Institution. Students with Teachers are free to have conversations across various topics, but the Educational Space CANNOT be allowed to be taken over by a Protest Culture and impose itself on the other Students and most importantly, the Institution itself. In such situations, for Institutions to rely upon the 'sweetness of tolerance' and for it to 'plead and urge' protestors to stop the protest, is not only playing blind, but exhibits disrespect towards the Institution. Those managing the Institution CANNOT be seen vacillating and being indecisive in taking action to bring back the order and decorum in it's working. The Institution must WANT to take the required action against miscreants and not be seen as being lenient against such acts of bullying. The Institution MUST NOT feel shy to exhibit it's authority in such situations, and not uselessly engage with such elements which are vitiating the atmosphere of an Educational Space. Whatever has happened in Columbia University and all other American universities, is a complete failure of the Institutional Authority to take decisive action in evicting these protestors from the campus. This shows that the Institutional Authorities are themselves involved or are incompetent to take action or were under pressure to not take action. All of which just shows that American Universities are in a state of mess and have lost their Educational Values by allowing themselves to be taken over by a pack of protestors. In brief, American Universities are UNSAFE which promotes bullies and bullying.

The students took it to far so law enforcement being called in is on them. 1st amendment says you have free speech not the right to occupy and damage a building that doesn't belong to you. The cops even gave them a chance to leave the building and avoid being arrested. Bottom line All of you whining about Columbia because you're mad about what's happening in Gaza have a lot of growing up to do.

With moral clarity like this, you clearly are meant to be a university president of the caliber and integrity on display here with Shafik herself. Congratulations.
