I understand from the comments that the story is supposed to be based on a memoir, and that the memoir was not entirely accurate or true, and had been embellished and exaggerated. Having said that, from a person with some experience with addiction and recovery... this rings true. I'm not here to preach, but this trailer resonates with truth. I am grateful to be here, clean, today. Amen and Namaste, mofos :)

I also have personal experience with addiction and recovery, and while sometimes in telling a story you can communicate the spirit of the truth instead of the "facts" per se, I'll always look at this guy's story with some serious side eye. And frankly, I think it's weird and dangerous to lionize your recovery from any kind of addiction by distorting the facts. The facts are hard and harsh enough as they are. IMHO the interesting story, the third act, if you will, would have been an exploration of what drove the author to exaggerate/minimize his story to the point of falsehood? And what was it like, as your book became a best seller, and the fame spotlight swung your way, staying sober but keeping your lies a secret? Did you stay sober when Oprah, the personification of societal indignation (in this case, I have no beef with her in general) had you on the hot seat? What did that take? THAT would have been the honest, self-revelatory story I would be interested in.
@joefelice5062

The author of the book is a fraud though - he made money exploiting the real pain that you have been through. I wouldn't pay a dime to watch this. It would be like legitimizing Milli Vanilli. Somebody sang those songs, that's true, but the guys making all the money were not the guys who sang... same with this author. There are plenty of other movies about recovery that don't participate in a fraud.

@@johnoneil782 Great points, John. And while I am not a big Oprah fan, I think she did a good job when she had him back on her show to rip him a new one. I would have been just as pissed off if I put my reputation and my brand behind this guy, only to find I look like a fraud by association. And we are not even touching on the people he "inspired:" to get clean... after he admitted his fraud, how many of those people were let down enough to maybe use again? Not that any one person is responsible for someone else's addiction, but I could understand a person being so let down by this that they gave in one day, picked up a needle or a pipe again, thinking that getting clean is a fairy tale, that it doesn't really happen... Sad...

Regardless if it was exaggerated or not - this movie is about addiction and overcoming and moving forward and making that decision to move on with your life. The book changed my life and opened my eyes to the life of an addict. We are all so consumed about what's going on in our lives and how our lives are affected by the choices that the addict makes, but we fail to stop and look at things from their point of view - what makes them a drug addict or alcoholic etc. It's a mental disease and it is not something they can just stop! I've lived through it - being with someone who was an addict. So I understand. Can't wait for the movie though :)

I honestly don't understand why everyone is so up in arms. Maybe I'm cynical, but even if a book says "memoire" I assume it's not completely true. Even if it was completely made up, did it resonate with people? Help people feel like someone out there understood what they were going through? What a family member or friend was going through? Did it touch you? Entertain you? That's the purpose of writing. That's why people tell stories, or share experiences. To connect, to heal, to uplift, (and yes, to entertain). If I read a book about someone going through something devastating that I went through and then find out they'd made it up, I would just be amazed that they were able to capture the experience so accurately. I honestly find all the hate baffling.

@@viciousbane569 ...The publisher took Frey's work of fiction and sold it as an autobiography. It was Frey's first book, nobody thought it would sell and the publisher said it didn't matter, and so he shrugged and went along. When the book blew up, Frey said he freaked out, but figured most of it was true anyway (most of his books are pretty autobiographical), so he went along. I don't know what percentage of the book is true and what's not (likely the parts where he's a tough guy and getting lots or girls is probably nonsense, haha). But people respond to this book because of its authenticity. For me, whether it's all literally true or not is irrelevant. I take it as a work of great fiction. The obsession people have about the circumstances around its initial appearance is unfortunate.

I love you call it a controversial book but in reality it was more than just "controversial". Frey wrote a book of fiction that was rejected over and over again (even by Random House the publisher of the book). He then shopped it around as a memoir and it was scooped up by Random House, who never looked into whether or not it was actually a memoir or if any of the story is true. The smoking gun started to investigate to see if they could find a mug shot for Frey but that never came to be and they found out so much of his story was fake. He first claimed only small stuff was fabricated but stood by the book claiming it as essentially the truth. He then claimed the demons that caused him to be an addict was the reason he pretended it was a memoir and fabricate crucial parts of the "memoir". He continued to claim the gf was real but when one of the authors of Freakonomics was searching the Centers of Disease Control for mortality detail records couldn't find anything to corroborate Frey's account of the gf's suicide. Frey then claimed that he changed it in the story but when he "came clean" with the real way the author couldn't find anything to corroborate that story either. Frey didn't embellish to make a memoir read better. He lied about it completely because his story was rejected as a fictional story. The worst part is that it is a well done depiction of how some people struggle with addiction and could have been used as a cathartic tool for some but that was all squandered away because of the fraud and deceit the author tried to get away with. Cannot believe the author still gets to profit off his lies!

My buddies father does coke daily, and now my buddy is doing it too and has been since he was like 15 apparently with his father, the kid is tweaked 24.7 on coke, shrooms, acid, oxy and pretty much anything he can get. Has a great job and still does well for himself, has a girlfriend and he works his ass off. I asked him today if he still does it as much and he says yeah prolly an 8ball a week now. I cut back big time, no more bud and shit which i'm happy to hear, but he even said himself he's not an addict and only does it when he feels like it. But we all know no one will admit when they have a problem. The worst part about it is that his mother has no idea all of these years and she would kill them both if she found out. They would get divorced and take everything. She does not play. So now i'm in this tough spot, should i tell her and hopefully she makes both the father and my buddy go to rehab and give them a chance, or do i let him keep on the way he has been but casually?

I know the actual memoir was half fake but this book was so touching and REAL like the people I know who have been through the rehabilitation journey all agree. Yea it sucks how it came around but it can still be enjoyed for what it is

This is a situation where I had to go get this guy and then, ask everyone to love him and "Can we share a bit because I think, he needs me?" Many of the people in our lives just can't handle everything and we have had to just be as loving as we can. They scream and act out and stuff. This one really lost it because we were trying to be exclusive, IDK. My husband has babe with me for 1000's of years, so it's kind of important to us sometimes, but whatever. Everyone needs to be loved, but he says, "Molly, if you touch another human being I'll freak out". So, No!

I noticed Juliette Lewis is In it, she’s a Scientologist and they do not believe in psychiatry. And yet there she is playing a counselor. Am I the only one who finds this slightly amusing.

I really wanted Gandolfini to play Leonard. This book and the follow up My Friend Leonard were a couple of my favorite books. Now I have to go back and reread them. Probably wont watch the movie though.

wow. clicked on this not expecting much but left with a "Holy wow" feeling. That is a pretty good group of actors bunched in a NO name movie. Those few words Charlie spoke were on FIRE. Literally may be a DECENT movie.

as does everyone about everything these days. however its a story so its ok. movie is BASED on a true story but no one said it was EXACTLY the story. All true life story's are BASED on actual events but again only based on, not exact!
