The dell xps 15 has always looked good but i've heard really bad things about the QC of those units, especially with the touchpad. When Apple came out with the M1 Pro/Max, I went and got the Pro 16 with the M1 Max and have been really enjoying it. I'm a software engineer and don't game on PC though so if you wanted one laptop to do both, the xps is a better bet for sure.

Mine is i9! It's very heavy for me unfortunately that's why I only use it at home and use MBA for school. But XPS 15 is really great for programming.

I have the LG gram 2-in-1. Got it refurbished on Amazon for $999. Definitely a steal at that price. The battery is really good and it's pretty powerful. Build quality is superb too. Slight misalignment on the trackpad, sometimes feels like it's hovering 0.5 mm above where it should be resting, but otherwise great. 2 thunderbolt ports (I plan to game with it after buying an eGPU adapter) and 1 USB A. And it's 17" at only 1.3 Kg. Disappointed with the speakers but I can connect my Bluetooth earbuds. Trackpad while it uses precision drivers is slightly less precise compared to Surface laptops. One other bad thing is LG has added some weird brightness/color control on it which changes according to dark or light mode being displayed in the majority of the screen.

How well would this work for architecture students? Wanting to recommend one for a family member but not sure if this would work well

You should try ROG Zephyrus laptops instead. Similar in portability while being way more powerful for cheaper.

Good enough until a hot summer comes and a dirt cheap resistor or capacitor ou something like that blows up in the main board and screws your communication lines between a perfectly fine cpu and gpu and you have only a option to pay 1k+ to sell for a 3 year old laptop, speaking for experience owned a xps 9570 and not upgrading to a new xp, besides fell power management is one of the worst
