I visit several towns in north eastern Mississippi to find Whelen sirens in Horn Lake, Eudora, and Sledge and find some sirens I've never seen before.

Great Video! Some Notes: The Whelen 2906 Is Part Of A Line Ranging From the 2901 (Which Has One Of Those Sectors) And The 2910 Which Has 10 Of The Sectors. The Sirens (Over There) are Most Likely For Severe Weather, But The Sirens Before Them (More Similar To The Sirens In LA) Were Probably Meant For The Volunteer Firefighters To Get To The Station Because Of A Fire Before The Introduction Of Pagers And Radio. All Of The Sirens In This Video Were Whelen Sirens, And Whelen Specializes In Electric Sirens, Which Means That instead Of A Motor Chopping Up Air, They Are Basically Huge Speakers, And You Can Hear What They Sound Like If You Just Search Up Anywhere On KZfaq: "Whelen 2906 Siren Test" Or "Whelen 4004 Siren Test" One More Note (Last One I Promise) The Last Siren Was Indeed A Whelen 4004 And It Probably Replaced An Older Siren That Was At The Fire Station For The Above Listed Reason, Along With The Second Siren

There is a Federal Signal Model 7 on the water tower behind the fire station and the Whelen Vortex so the Whelen probably replaced that one

Growing up on Long Island I was surrounded by sirens going off it seemed like everyday, I swear the one outside my HS stopped class at noon everyday, but it was nothing I really ever thought of, they were just part of the environment, I say this because those were specifically for the Volunteer Fire Department, so I totally understand that part of your information. As for everything else, part of the reason why I do these siren walks is to not only to see the sirens themselves, but to learn about them by getting the feedback from so community. As long as you guys are willing to share your knowledge and educate me on the sirens I visit, I'll keep visiting sirens all over the country. You can never give too much information. So, thank you so much!

Most sirens in South Mississippi are Whelen Vortex R4s (or 4004s, whatever is the newer of the two). Haven't heard the ones here test in ages. You can find some old mechanical sirens here and there in places like Hattiesburg and Gulfport/Biloxi, but Laurel is literally nothing but old sirens, just like the rest of the town being old looking. Mostly Thunderbolts, but I know there's an Allertor in Hattiesburg.

Great video Douglas as always! Here In SoCal we actually have some Whelen sirens, there is 2 at Azusa Pacific University, 2 on both Harvard Westlake campuses in LA, and ones on Military bases such as Fort Irwin, Palms MCCS, MCAS Miramar, as well as down on Coronado Island in San Diego with 3 rotating Whelen Vortex sirens like the one in the end of the video just to name a few. There used to be a whole system of 50 Whelen sirens for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station down in South Orange County, but last year 39 of the 50 were removed early last year due to the cities around the plant not realizing the other uses for them for non nuclear related stuff such as Tsunami’s and Earthquakes since that whole area down there is costal and is a hazard to those incidents. Nearby Newport Beach and Huntington Beach have siren systems as well for those emergencies, and if the cities around SONGS took over the sirens, they are already up and installed, so no additional cost to install them from the ground up like what the other places nearby like Huntington and Newport did. Except the Whelens used for SONGS where 2800 series sirens which are older then the 2900 series, but both are cosmetically the same minus some small differences, and a big difference with the 2900 series is they are louder and have a higher effective range, as well as clearer voice messages. The only Whelens from SONGS’s system that remain are the 10 that are on MCAS Camp Pendleton which are now owned by the base and used with their separate siren system. Good news is that one of the cities that had SONGS’s sirens will be getting new sirens as the poles that were in that city were left up. And it sounds like the city will be getting 2900s which is an upgrade from the 2800s that were there before.

Awesome! Whelens happen to be my favorite of the various models. Also, the Sledge Whelen is a "Whelen Vortex R4" the 4 means the amount of speakers seated in the siren, as there are 4 throats on the siren, there can be 1-4 speakers, for example a Vortex with 3 speakers would be a Vortex R3, but it would still have all 4 throats, just one wouldn't have a speaker in it. Whelen also produces another model exactly like this one, the 4000, though it uses a different rotator style, allowing it to know which direction it is facing, and is also voice capable, while the Vortex is not. Oh and the big box is like a tone generator with speaker amps inside, and it houses heavy duty batteries so the siren would still be operable if the power were to go out. If you have anymore questions I will be glad to answer!

Since I live in Los Angeles that's where my interest in sirens got started, mostly stemming from my interest in WWII history in the area, and since there's so many of them in LA county their easy to visit. But, now that my interest has been piqued, I'm interested in finding sirens all over. I was grateful I had the opportunity to find some in MS.

If you ever find yourself in Huntsville Alabama please message me and let me know! I'm pretty sure our area has the biggest concentration of siren enthusiasts in the world. By the way, all of these sirens in the video are radio controlled. You can see the radio antennas on all of them right above solar panels. I actually own parts of a whelen 2800 series siren, and a whelen 2900 series siren. I'll be more than happy to show you them and how they work! And also it's pronounced: WHEE-LIN

Small world! I subscribed to your channel earlier this year, but I just so happen to originally be from Mississippi and most of my family lives in Memphis. If you will be in the Memphis area, they test their sirens every Wednesday at 3:30. They have a few ACA P-50's, which are the largest and loudest sirens to be produced in the modern era. There is one close to the Mississippi state line that was refurbished within the past couple of years (close to 3884 Sewanee Rd, Memphis, TN 38109). Memphis also has a lot of Thunderbolts. It's a pretty neat system because there is a lot of new sirens mixed in with the old and they are all still working.

I honestly never know where I'll end up any given month. Next month I could be in New York (almost happened), so being in Memphis was a lark and I wish I had more time to explore the city, like being able to visit that literal pyramid shrine to Bass Pro Shop! That being said, if I'm ever in the area again, I definitely will be on the look out for all the sirens that people have mentioned (that is, if I have a car to use, which I didn't have on this trip and had to borrow while the rest of the crew went cart racing)

I only had the three days off to do any real traveling and using one of those days to search for sirens was a last minute thought so I definitely missed a few. Thank you for pointing that out! I was in MS for about a month and did not hear any sirens being tested, but most of that time was around the Clarksdale area. Maybe, when things settle down, I need to return. Also, I was to drive the Nachez Trace, so there's that too. Thanks for the additional info!

You were wondering how the power works on these sirens, the bottom of the controller box has space for two car batteries, of which are charged by the solar panel. The whole siren runs off these two batteries, and as a result, can work during a power outage, even at night. Hope this helps.
@Duderocks5539
@Duderocks5539 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. Basically they run off primarily off the batteries to power the amplifiers, tone board, speakers, etc. typically there is power from ground either 120 or 240v to primarily power the battery charger, and then the solar panel is a secondary way to charge the batteries if the ground power and battery charger goes out. This is typically how all electronic sirens work. The sound is all generated from the cabinet and the head up top is basically what amplifies the tones from the tone generator in the cabinet. Whelen makes by far the best electronic sirens on the market and industry, and they are also in the vehicle siren business too and provide a lot of the police car sirens that you hear everywhere. Whelens mass notification sirens on the other hand are extremely effective, efficient, and reliable, and are very simple and not that expensive to maintain, which is why they are one of the most popular sirens out there. Even older Whelens from as early as the 1980s are still extremely good sirens. Whelen is also the first siren company to create the electronic outdoor warning siren, battery back up (which is now a standard on almost all sirens in the industry), as well as the first company to be able to broadcast live or prerecorded voice messages. Other companies electronic sirens such as Federal Signal for example followed that and incorporated those features in their own electronic sirens. But Whelen created those first things, and are still the best in the industry and are the loudest electronic sirens as well.

Great video ! A video of somewhere else to change it up a bit ! Nothing spinning in them, they're electronic sirens, basically a pile of speakers, you can plug in a mic on the controller and talk on them, or even play music by plugging your phone in the controller ! The third one is indeed a Whelen 4004 and is rotating. Other manufacturers make similar sirens, like Federal Signal and their Modulator, or American Signal Corp. (ASC) and their iForce 😉 ! They're much more modern sirens, made since the 90's I believe and still made today. As for how they sound, Whelen has the list of tones on their website www.whelenmassnotification.com/siren-warning-tones/ . There are also numerous videos of them on KZfaq. Oh and Whelen is pronounced "wheel-n" 😉.

As usual, thank you for the wealth of information. Yeah, I had never seen those types of sirens before, nore had I heard of Whelen. Saying that they are basically speakers makes sense that they would run off of solar alone (not that amps can need a lot of electricity). Visiting those sirens was a last minute thought while sitting in a bar in Memphis, so other than finding a map, I had no idea what the sirens were going to be or spend any time researching them.
