I just purchased a 44mm gun metal grey with grey strap. I've been looking at this watch for at least two years. I received some inheritance from my Grandfather and he always wore nice watches. It's my very first Swiss automatic watch and I couldn't be happier. I wear with pride. Love it.

Nice to see Startimer here, i own a sliver dial from last generation. Making pilot's watch is not easy to differentiate from one to another and I think Alipna just make it to be different but yet to stick with the elements of being a pilot's watch. The applied markers just elevates the watch to next level and I'm glad to see 40mm version is now available.

I have a Alpina Startimer Pilot special edition grey case display case back 40 MM I believe. Its in a rotation with a Omega Chrono Planet Ocean, Tudor Black bat S7G chrono, and Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde and holds its own. The case is very smooth and comfortable. Really like it, its my Flieger.

A fine looking time piece Teddy, for once I don't seem to mid the date at three that much with the date ring matching the dial colour. If I was to be a tad picky I'd still prefer the date at 6 or not at all. The 40mm would probably be my choice given the slim bezel. I've no issues with the use of the Sellita movement as it's a well proven work horse where service and parts should not be an issue. A well executed design worthy of a second look.

I have the startimer classic. Same case but the nummers arent lumed but polished and it has a see through caseback. Also have the classic chronograph. Both are excellent watches.

I have the 44mm in titanium and black and absolutely love it. The only issue is the massive crown digs into your wrist.

Absolutely agree that Alpina does a nice case. I have an Alpiner 4 and that case also has nice touches. Also, I think the Selita is possibly more ubiquitous than the ETA.

Alpina website says it uses an in house AL-525 movement? Is it just an SW200 derivative?

@@itamaradio Had a IWC mark xviii for a few days. Vastly prefer the Alpina. Better applied numerals, better saffire / AR coating, Better case with subtle polished areas the IWC doesnt have, as I said better crown, Better Lume, More intersting dial / polished hands. Actually couldn't belive the IWC costs more than 4x as much, and both Sellita movements. No brainer.

Especially like Alpina's approach for the indices at 3, 6, 9, & 12. Outside the norm. 44mm case though - just knocked the wind out of me. Alpina - produce it in a 38mm!

I wish the “automatic “ and the 100 m-330ft was not there or at least smaller... makes it busier than it should and its plain ugly and unnecessary to have that on the dial.

Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 Baumuster B is a option with more heritage. But if you want a more modern appearance this is also good.

The cheapest Sellita movement ruins Alpina. I mean it's 2023 ffs, every new watch should have 70h power reserve by default by now. Most brands are too cheap to get better movements, hence why there's still demand for outdated movements, hence no one cares to upgrade them.

@@davemarsden1259 Yet it could've been even better. ETA introduced Powermatic 80, Seiko Prospex offers 70h, even Chinese factories now produce 70h movements. What stops Sellita from upgrading their cheapest 38h power reserve movement? I've never heard a complaint about power reserve being too big, but skipped a lot of watches that had a very short one.

@@davemarsden1259 I really think I was VERY clear what my beef with SW200 is. It has the shortest power reserve in the world after some crappy Chinese movements. I repeat myself: I mean it's 2023 ffs, every new watch should have 70h power reserve by default by now. Especially over 1K. But if you're fine with paying for something that should've been easily upgraded a decade ago just like competition did, but isn't, that's OK. It's just lazy watchmaking and the brand cheaps out on you. And since there's still demand, Sellita is just too lazy to throw in a bigger barrel and make a couple adjustments. Coz they do have other up to 65h movements, btw.
