Climate Emergency Forum

Ай бұрын

Climate Emergency Forum discusses the content of the recent UN Secretary General António Guterres’ speech given at the American Museum of Natural History where the need for urgent action is reiterated, saying "we are flirting with climate disaster.”
This video was recorded on June 12th, 2024, and published on June 23rd, 2024, and represents the opinions of the discussion participants.
The severe and disproportionate impacts of climate change on the world's most vulnerable populations, is highlighted emphasizing that those least responsible for the crisis are the hardest hit. It underscores the plight of the poorest people, particularly in regions like Latin America, Southeast Asia, and India, as well as indigenous communities, women, and girls.
The discussion also points out the staggering inequality in carbon emissions, noting that the richest 1% of humanity emits as much carbon dioxide as the poorest two-thirds. This disparity highlights the urgent need for climate justice, where those who contribute most to the problem should bear the greatest responsibility for addressing it. The dialogue calls for immediate and significant reductions in fossil fuel subsidies and emissions to prevent catastrophic global warming, emphasizing that the current trajectory is unsustainable and dangerous.
Furthermore, the dialogue touches on the broader implications of climate change, including its impact on global health, food security, and the ability to maintain peace and security. The increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events are causing widespread displacement and destruction, making it difficult for communities to recover. The dialogue stresses the importance of collective action and the need for systemic changes to the global economy to address these challenges effectively.
Finally, the dialogue reflects on the role of youth and grassroots movements in driving climate action. It acknowledges the critical contributions of young people and marginalized communities in advocating for climate justice and calls for their inclusion in decision-making processes. The dialogue concludes with a call to action, urging viewers to support climate initiatives and engage in efforts to create a more equitable and sustainable future.

Brazil here. I have to give my testimony. I'm 57 and all my life I have lived in Rio. This time of the year should be the coolest. Right now temps should be hovering around 23/26C since it's high winter in the tropics after all. It's 15:00 and the thermometers all around me are reading astounding 34C in the shade! I'm concerned about this coming summer. With every season, temps appear to be escalating at a non-linear almost exponential rate.

I don't know about unavoidable. We have too many delusions which we will not overcome. Humanity's collective footprint is simply too large but everyone, including environmentalists want to preserve, and expand, BAU and that means expanding BAU and to want to include more people as beneficiaries of that BAU, and that means the calls on energy and resources. No one is talking about downsizing the entire human project, reducing energy use, population and economic activity. Far from it, many blue pilled environmentalists are touting the "economic benefits" of an "energy transition" which just means overshoot by other means, or overshoot by not increasing CO2 (if that is even possible and it may not be). EVs, hybrids, clean electricity are all beside the point and offer too little too late and are loaded with contradictions. Instead of degrading the environment with coal mining we degrade the environment through mining cobalt, nickel, copper and lithium instead. Why not less energy and raw materials for a smaller economy for a shrinking population? The is no car as green as the car which never has to be built in the first place and no suburb as green as the suburb which never has to be built in the first place. In my country there are all sorts of subsidies for "clean energy" and EVs and I think "great way to go into denial and bargaining" instead of addressing the real issues, the elephant in the living room, namely overshoot. The priority is at all times the economy. Always! I have noticed the intrusion of identity politics into climate change. This tells me that nothing is going to be done, not even the luke warm half measures which pass for actual action. I have observed that whenever identity politics comes into an issue the issue dies and is buried. Identity politics is divisive by definition and because of that it is destructive. I look at identity politics in global warming as like an arguement within the mafia about fairness of sharing the loot from menacing the community and shaking the community up for every justice and fairness within the mafia. Makes no difference to the other species.

Thank you for your dedication in producing your invaluable videos. We have an imminent general election in UK on July 4th. and will likely see a rout of the deeply corrupt Consevatives who have trashed our country for the last dozen or so years, including the disaster of Brexit. However, what is the first priority for the incoming Labour governmet? Why, (unsustainable) economic growth!!!! So we are doomed to catastrophe before we even get started. Its hard not to despair and I'm afraid I don't have much faith in humanity as a whole to fix the problem, as the ones in charge (unlike Mr Gutierrez) are almost always fixated on power, not compassion.

It was super confusing, but zeke H kept saying it wasn't the right graph for that discussion. Haven't heard a solid explanation, but possibly related to whether the "mean of models" line included the "hot models"... E.g. line was running higher than the general consensus. Having the trend around 1.28 ... 1.43 is more consistent with other publications. We'll be over 1.5 trend soon enough. 2025 -> 2035

Therefore, we must ALL protest from home, by staying home EVERY Friday from now till 2030. Do not go to work, do not drive a car, do not shop the mall or Amazon, do not purchase anything from the corporate world! PERIOD! This will reduce FF use by 18%. This will reduce corporate profits by 35%. This will not inconvenience the police or our shoddy government. This will be completely legal. It will be the biggest statement in the history of the world that WE, the People, will not tolerate tyranny by the 1% for the 1%. We SEE the sociopathic corporate world for what it is: a giant ponzi scheme to take everything from the poor and powerless, and then give it to the already rich and powerful. This is an elegant, simple, peaceful solution to engender major change in the power structure of the planet; and is the only way we have been given to finally have our voices heard. I live in the foothills of the Trinity Alps in Northern California, my humble little farm is in Six Rivers National Forest with my northern border being the Trinity River. (If you could iron out Trinity County flat, it would be the size of Texas!!!). My property is a highland wetland that hosted abundant life of which I am watching decline by staggering degrees. I've probably lost 70-80% of the insects and others who used to be all over this place. It's disturbing as hell. I've reported it, but my calls of concern have gotten me nowhere.

For what little it's worth, I'm right there with you. Grew up around the southern Appalachian mountains and in my lifetime I've seen a staggering loss in biodiversity in terms of insects, fish, newts, crawdads, bats, and migrating birds and butterflies. And there is no sign things are slowing or improving - we will most likely live to see entire ecosystems collapse (haven't even mentioned the ocean, and that one is a heartbreaker). We're trying to plant as many plants and shade tress native to the area in the hopes that when we're gone, their descendants can reclaim the devastation we left.

I've had conversations with several farmers about insects and birds disappearing, people in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe all reporting the same. A farmer from the Midwest US told me he kept accurate records and logged conversations with farmers elsewhere regarding insect die-off so he could present evidence when he contacted the EPA, assuming they would want to take some kind of action in response. When he called them they told him in the present political climate if it didn't negatively affect corporate profits it would not be addressed. They would not accept his data or schedule a meeting. Any chance of studying and documenting the problem in an official capacity? Not going to happen. BTW last time I was in the Trinity area the afternoon temperature topped 115 F along the river. That was over 20 years ago. Can't imagine being there now.

Now I'm married to a woman who gets mad at me when I turn lights out, lower air conditioners and thermostats, and drive too slow to conserve gas. G'day Russ Firstly, I'm not upset or angry about your "elderly" statement ))) but being almost 73, I'm wondering if I would fall into your suggestion. Yep, I've been around the sun many times, but now, I'm just about housebound, I don't buy new stuff .... cars, flash clothes, go on trips, my beautiful wife and I simply veg at home, enjoying nature all around us. We actually don't consume much and even contribute to the environment by not letting humanity "invade where we are living. Own water, own power, own vgetabls and caring as much as we can for the bush/forest flora and fauna around us )))) So, I'm wondering "would we oldies be addng as much to the problem as say, younger people who are much more active" (we've already done most of our damage to the planet, when, in our ignorance, we blindly enjoyed a high carbon lifestyle) I remember a movie where a guy organised for all people over 50 were put into "humane" retirement places behind fences and "looked after". The guy did this with the most noble of intentions (no oldies were hurt during the making of this movie type stuff )))))).....). That way, the young'ns were able to govern. Then the show ended with a little kid, maybe 10 years old, throwing rocks at ducks in a pond. And the leader who organised the homes for old people said to him "don't do that, just let them enjoy the pond" And the 10 year old mumbles as the older person walks away "old people telling us kids what to do, something must be done about that" So, even though, I guess your idea might have some merit in some circumstances, what happens when the next idea clamps down on ..... say ...... you Meant with love and respect Steve

4.45 - hooray someone is finally saying it - it is tragedy for the animals who have had the grotesque ill fortune to have to share this planet with us lot. At 15 you are being a bit naughty here talking about governments subsidising the fossil fuel industry but no mention of the fact that governments spend trillions subsidising animal agriculture - not a word as usual.

Couldn't agree more; factory farming is both creating more devastating effects to the climate - water consumption, staggering amounts of animal waste, and methane - and destroying land that could otherwise cool the planet and capture more carbon. EDIT: And yes the actual treatment of the animals is beyond appalling.

@chickenpea TortieI. It's much easier to blame the rotten oil industry, though most of us use their fine products everyday, instead of changing our diet. But still we claim to love our children and grandchildren. Humans are funny, stupid animals without any ethics but unfortunately technically enormously skilled. At least some of us are. We shouldn't have grown thumbs. That's where the trouble started.

I think we need to acknowledge in the US that our infrastructure isn't ready for a wholesale change to EV's. We need grid upgrades, more and faster charging stations, and I'm sure there is more. In the meantime, we should push for higher efficiency (e.g. buy and use hybrids in places where EV's aren't practical yet) vehicles. For heating/cooling we need to accelerate our adoption of geothermal, solar/wind power with better storage. And, finally, most importantly, we need to rally the people to put pressure on our political leaders. Imagine a million-person march on Washington demanding more aggressive action and support for the things we can do NOW to eliminate the pollution of GHG's in all industries, not just transportation. End the subsidies for fossil fuels, increase the incentives for moving toward renewables. And, dare I say it, invest in nuclear power as well. We need all options on the table toward eliminating the emissions flood going on now.

Thanks, as always, for your efforts. Please help me to understand something......If emissions must be cut by 9% per year, by 2030, how can that happen unless the consumer demand side, ( largely represented by the worlds worst emitters ), do just that. Would that not commit American consumers, (for example), to apply massive decreases in their demand, in each of those years. On a voluntary basis, this would be impossible to achieve. Most people are addicted to fossil fuel use, 24/7. I have scant respect for fossil fuel companies, but despite their subsidies, the ability of consumers to change their behavior on such a massive scale, year after year, makes us just as much to blame, in effect. If speedy, and massive efforts were to go into renewables, which can't even work without backup from fossil fuels, and much further degradation of natural habitats through massive mining efforts, is it realistic to think that "naked apes" more ready than ever to lob nukes at each other, could pull this off? I have to be honest, and I'd like to be wrong.
@alanj9978
@alanj9978 Ай бұрын
It is very obviously not going to happen. Fossil fuel usage continues to increase YoY. Emissions dropped all of 4.6% in 2020 and that required shutting down most of the world for 6 months. So we have to somehow restrict activity twice as much? And then double down on that, year after year. Ain't gonna happen.

Phew, that was though to hear to.. still, thanks for putting it up. Special thanks again to Regina - she never fails to mention non-human animals, and that is priceless! Then, when she mentioned the struggle and pain of being part of the human species knowing all this... well, I'm not even (spiritually) identifying human, but that doesn't help much - it doesn't change the fact that I'm part of this society that puts an unsurpassable level of destruction onto this planet. And that disgusts me, it's exasperating. I can't put the full blame to governments or the fossil industry. One can eat less meat, go electric, have no children.. yes, those are all good but they don't change it: one is still part of this rotten system, hence part of the crime. Currently trying to learn building my own (tiny) house and going at least partly off-grid, to at least try and leave this toxic system behind, just a tiny little bit. This video reminded me again how important that is. About the climate protests, I have a different stance, though.. I don't think that vandalism (like seen in Stonehenge recently) does any good to the cause. There's ample protests since years.. Greta, XR, last generation.. what good did it do? CO2 is still on the rise. It won't work like this, I don't see it justified. The sad thing is that extremist protests are just a sign that it's in fact too late. Those who care are too small in number. I fear the best we can do by now is try to cause as little additional harm as possible, and brace for the impact.

I would never minimize the tragedy of human suffering and deaths due to climate catastrophe. However, being a great lover of animals I think it is horrifying the nightmare or just ongoing increases of stress all non-human species are experiencing because of humans and their refusal to give up anything for the sake of others including their own survival. Most people are not concerned about the suffering of the animals that humans share this planet with. At least not enough to cut down their "consumption" of fossil fuels or to cut way down on usage of products that are generally toxic. I am surprised that so little has been said also regarding that the use of automobiles destroys millions of animals each year due to "collisions" between animals and automobiles. Something that is violent, truly horrifying and who cares? I came home from a drive to the coast in Oregon and found a beautiful butterfly that my car had sabotaged on its way to where this butterfly had intended to go. From that point I cut down on the use of my car to the bare minimum....to get to work. But now I have not had a car for 25 years and have cut down on buying new items. Instead I repair. There are things that people can do to help other living beings survive long term. Always share your resources with other creatures. Put out millet for small seed eating birds. Make pans of water available to all wildlife in your area. Think of ways that you can help animals so that they are not stressed all of the time. And live simply even primitively in as many ways as possible. I don't believe that the only culprits in climate catastrophe are fossil fuel industries. Every time we accept the mode of living which technology has made available to us (whether directly related to using fossil fuels or indirectly related) we are going in the wrong direction and accepting a style of life that is damaging and unsustainable. Please help the animals we share this planet with. Give them shade trees, a little food and always make water available to them. Plant "things" that are beneficial to them snd walk, ride a bicycle or use mass transit whenever possible. Turn off lights when you leave a room and use and repair items rather than throwing them out. Our fellow inhabitants of this Earth need our concern. And take reasonable actions to help the homeless like giving a clean blanket to someone who may need it or a gallon of clean, fresh water and some healthy, prepared food. All of us need to be involved to the extent that we are able to. Doing what you can, can make a big difference when you add it all up.

This has benefited small scale farmers, wildlife and even helped to bring back river beds where trees modulate the water flow. They also help to grow crops which support local economies. Another way we can help is buying local, sustaining local farmers , and reducing transport, which is giving money to the fuel industries. Using public transport. Less reliance on vehicles. Reducing flights, and avoiding buying goods which are carried long distance. Do we really need all those electric gadgets? Probably many of us already doing these things.
