One of the first things I printed when I got a 3d printer were 123 blocks. Dialled the printer in until the calipers agreed, now have a ton of them. 10, 20, 30mm, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4"; you name it, I've probably got it. Child of the UK 70s so I'll use which makes more sense to me at any given time.

I have my set of set-up blocks on my bench at the ready. As David mentioned, so much more accurate than looking at a tape measure. Use them a lot for machining lumber to thickness. Feeling the difference of a 3/4" piece and a 3/4" gauge block so much easier and precise than a measure.

I use setup blocks and 1-2-3 blocks all the time. I definitely have a favorite use for setup blocks. When you use a roundover bit and you don't quite get the corner of the blade under the base of the router, you get an annoying ridge next to your roundover. I learned a long time ago that if you hold your router upside down, and run the setup block on the base to the bit, you can see if it hits before the roundover part. If it does, you can lower the bit until it moves into the round part. That has saved me so much aggravation I can't even tell you.

You can use a combination square to set the height of your blade very accurately. A steel ruler is better than a tape measure for just about any fine measurements. I suppose if you need fine accuracy and can spare the cost...why not buy the blocks.

If you can't afford the set up blocks at first, you can use the square dowels from the big box stores. Both the Orange and Blue store have square dowels from 1/4" up to 1". I measured mine and they are pretty accurate. The ones from the Blue store are made from poplar. I bought one of each dowel and cut them all to the same length (3" and 5") and am using the rest for what ever. Can you argue that because they are made of wood they are susceptible to shrinkage and expansion or inaccuracies. Yes you can, but I won't listen. LoL I'm fully away of that and that's why they are temporary set up blocks for now. So far, for the past year, they have worked great.

Great video. I have a digital gauge but it always seems to have issues. I won't use it to set my blade at 90, no matter how many times I have done it, it is always off. I rely on my engineers square for that. My thought is that if I can't use it without issue to set a simple 90, how far off is it when I cut a bevel?

Good points in a fair presentation. It would have been a really good presentation except for the highly distracting person jerking around in the video in the background. I lost what you were saying every time the camera angle changed and brought the display back into view. I kept wanting to yell "For dog's sake, quite jumping around back there!" or "Turn off the mad TV!!" BTW. I've hated the Imperial system for over 50 years, ever since trying to figure out which "pounds" were meant in various engineering equations: F=ma {force (in pounds-force)= mass (in pounds-mass) x acceleration (in ft./sec^2}, with pounds sometimes abbreviated as P, or p, or Lb., each different (maybe), and used differently by different authors in different engineering books (back then). The difference between some of them, sometimes, was the gravitational constant, g. Then there were slugs and poundals. In the metric system, 1 Newton (force) = 1 Kg (mass) x m/sec^2, easy peasy! (Got all that? There may be a quiz later. 🙂)
