Jared, I have to share this, my Daddy's oldest brother Ralph died in 1973 Dec 26! I was 4 turning 5 on March 17, 1974. Well there were 10 in my Daddy's family when my favorite aunt was dying in 1996, she died at home and the last few minutes of her life she kept talking about angels then she was talking about a beautiful river, but she couldn't get across, then she said,"there's Ralph(their oldest brother) he will help me cross!" She was gone in seconds with the biggest smile on her face! I do believe they come back for us! Patricia Gambino Harrington

This story reminds me so much of my dad and my grandpa. My grandma and grandpa had six children including my dad, four boys and two girls. Because my grandpa was a coalminer in Kentucky, at one point they lived in a coalminer's shack with newspaper covering the walls. Even though my dad moved away from Kentucky, to the Pacific Northwest, Kentucky was in his heart and soul. He loved to reminisce about his childhood and I'm glad he did because now I have those memories too. Appalachian culture was important to my dad even in spite of the West Coast people mocking his country ways. Well… I love me a mess of beans and I love these stories, and I thank you Jared for another great one that brought the water to my eyes. I'm mighty proud of my roots, mighty proud!

Story brought me back to when our young family migrated to an old unheated little farmhouse in Sparta over 30 yrs. ago, 10 acres abutting the little airport. The best memories.. now there are 10 grandchildren, one almost grown. Nashville used to roll up the sidewalks around 4:30 of an afternoon. I miss all the country folk and the old ways.. bittersweet story, Mr. Jared. Thank you so much for a beautiful story that brought me back to the very best times, memories that sustain my heart. This is one of my favorite stories about the people of Appalachia. Who am I kidding they're all my favorite for one reason or another. The wildflowers brought back memories of a Decoration Day on the Roan Mountain. We went near on every year, just to see the kinfolks and to put flower arrangements on the graves of our people who had passed on.
