A natural supplement for the skin - Polypodium leucotomos

Natural supplements are available for various skin conditions but not many have a scientific evidence. In this video, we can review the evidence behind the use of polypodium leucotomos, a South American fern, for various skin disorders. Studies have shown an efficacy in skin ageing, skin cancer prevention, vitiligo, atopic eczema, melasma and polymorphic light eruption. As it has not been noted to have any side effects or allergy, it may be a natural supplement worth suggesting to those do not want to consider allopathic medications.

@@lisagardner4814 There is some evidence that it may work for atopic eczema. Seborrhoeic eczema is the opposite as it occurs due to greasy skin and yeast overgrowth. Thats great Kevin. Its a natural supplement so you could continue with it long term. When you are in South America, maybe try and get the natural version of the herb, that may be even more authentic.

Thanks for your kind words! I practice in the Nuffield, Chester, and the Spire, Wrexham, so you could contact those hospitals if you would like an appointment. Most London Dermatologists are veery good in treating vitiligo as they manage many patients with skin of colour.

I've been taking 1000mg of a brand I found on Amazon for approx 4months. I don't see any change in my skin.. But, I like the idea that it "may" be preventing more basal/squamous cell skin cancer on my body.

You are absolutely right. There will be no significant visible signs on the skin. The previous literature suggests that it may have a role in reducing new skin cancers, particularly melanomas in those with fair skin and with a family history. Its like using statins to prevent heart attacks.

@Discover Dermatology ⭐️ Thank you for the encouragement Doctor! I am fair skinned. And have had at least 30 basal cell, & 2 squamous cell biopsies. (Also 2 MOHs procedures). So the Polypodium Luecotomos feels like a little bit of insurance. I appreciate your response! ♡

Most of the studies are small and were against placebo. So there are limitations with the science behind this natural supplement too. There is evidence that it works though, compared to other supplements that clearly are not better than placebo.

Most of its benefits seem to be from oral polyp odium rather than topical use on the skin.

Im afraid I do not know what is available in Mumbai. It may be worthwhile googling the term polypodium and I am sure there will be online pharmacies that provide it. Heliocare is a multinational company and their products will probably also be available le in India.

I tend to ask my patients to look online and purchase the most cost effective poly podium as it varies in each country. The only branded company that makes it is Heliocare, but they are available only in some countries and other local preparations may be more cost effective too.

There are anecdotal reports of vitiligo responding to polypodium but larger scale studies are needed.

Is this capable of undoing the damage done from being exposed to the ionizing radiation of CT scans, PET scans and mammograms? Many unaware Americans just let ERs and doctors do these imaging procedures and then coincidentally end up with cancer years later. Ionizing radiation, especially the high amounts you get from CT scans, etc induces cancer by disrupting the molecules and electrons in your cells. The radiation is strong enough to cause double strand damage and thus a gene mutation which eventually leads to cancer 6-7 years after exposure

A very food question indeed! I dont think there have been studies looking at the effectiveness of polypodium in preventing damage from scans. The best way may be to prevent damage from radiation may be to have healthy diets and good life style measures. Don't know its Tamil name mama but Heliocare is available in India as I found it in online pharmacies there. You can also get just the polypodium leucotomos alone and it is more cost effective. This is all available in online pharmacies.
