In this video we have a very neglected NAD 3020 Stereo amplifier, With distorted sound & dropping issues.
We strip down the unit, Attempt to revive the sound and give it a good tidy up. Hopefully it's as simple as using some De-Oxit on the controls......
Also the Amplifier is around 40 years old now, So we are going to be replacing the capacitors as part of the refurb. We will use high quality capacitors (i.e Panasonic, Nichicon), To replace the lower quality originals used by NAD.
Lets bring this unit back to its former glory.

The NAD 3020 line of amplifiers, Is widely regarded as one of the all time greats. It was a giant killer in the day and still holds its own today.
It is a great sounding amplifier and for the original retail price it is hard to beat.

This (well, model at least) was my first proper amp, in 1983! And, passed along withing the family, it's still going strong. Fabulous kit, and nice film too.

Agree, also electrolytic caps as you know have a finite lifespan inherent in their design.

@@abelabner yeah, it’s true. I’ve replaced some on my Sega consoles and they had caused damage to the boards from leaking. Don’t want that to happen again.

Great video. Reminds me of my recap process on my silver 3020. Learnt how to solder on KZfaq and replace capacitors. The amp is still in daily use and still sounds great. I did swap out the red LED's for a green to red set (two green, two amber, 1 red).

How much should it cost to fix the balance pot ? Mine cuts out one side
@retfurb
@retfurb Ай бұрын
@@kellywillems6126 obviously it depends what fixes it. I would personally clean it first with de-oxit, which will hopefully sort it. If you are doing it yourself, it would just be the cost of the deoxit. But obviously only doing this, if you are able to do it safely.

Great video. Im just wandering if you can recommened a certain set of RCA leads. The only ones that fit well are some cheapo ones. They seem bigger than most connections.

@CM-dw3gh Thank you for the kind comment, It is really appreciated. I always use Van Damme cables and connections. I then make them up to what I require. There are a number of suppliers, That do make them all up pre-made. They are a good quality cable and competitively priced. 👍

@@retfurb yes VD are pretty decent. Are you based in buckingham/northamptonshire? I could do with a recap of my 3020. There was someone on ebay offering this service but if i can travel to drop off id rather do this than post it. Cheers

@@retfurb no worries. Tbh its in pretty good nick. Slight scratch on the volume knob. Faint hum from the speakers (heard only close up), and a possible DC leak to the speakers when powering up. The woofers can move half an inch. But i use a headphone adapter to power up and down to prevent this happening. Obviously not a cure but im sure its not causing any ill health to my speakers?

Funy enough, I have one with me at the moment that does similar. It thuds as soon as the power button is turned on. Not the delayed power up hum, But an immediate power up thud. I haven't taken a good look at it yet, But it could well be a capacitor failed. The thing is they need to be removed individually and checked. So it will probably just mean a complete replacement whilst doing that.@@CM-dw3gh

Great video. Now I want to recap my 7225PE. Can you tell me where you got your capacitors from, and do you have a full list of the capacitors you replaced? Thanks Mark

Thank you, That's appreciated. I purchased them from a guy I regularly us on Ebay, I can send you the link. Is yours the same model type, As they can vary with capacitor values. I can certainly help with what I purchased though. 👍
