Yeah. Something else that needs to be updated.

We use this a lot. It’s become a common part of our designs to have View icons under the chart. Usually small circular buttons with ‘#’ Number, ‘%’ Percentage and ‘T’ Table views. We often use the same for ‘M’ Month, ‘W’ Week or ‘D’ Day views as they’re easier for users than drill down mechanics and makes it possible to customise the x axis in particular.

Great Patrick, as always. I think the real game changer would be to be able to conditionally show/hide visuals based on a custom DAX boolean expression for instance

I have a report much like that, I definitely like the data checkbox to switch visuals. I like to give the user some steps to follow, first you must click to filter, once you filter display a matrix and some field data as well. It helps the users really interact with their data.

Yes we use that. We also created a filter menu that basically opens up a shape on the left with buttons and cancel button to close the pane out. You can add slicers, buttons etc to it. Saves space on the visual space.

You are right, this is a great feature. I have been using it for years now, and it's generally really appreciated. However, this is also a gateway to multiple problems, and it should be very carefully considered before being implemented. On the user side, this can cause your reports to be slow, especially if you give too much information on a single page. On the developper side, maintaining and updating this becomes a bit more tedious, as you need to take into account more visuals, that are hidden behind one another. But all in all, this is still a very useful tip, that can bring life to some amazing reports !

The great thing about field parameters, and the much-loved SWITCH workaround that preceded it, is that it takes a fairly static looking report and gives the user the power to play with it. In my experience, a lot of the reluctance to move from Excel to Power BI is that people can feel they are losing the ability to play with and explore data. Moving to Power BI is good for forcing people to come up with a good idea of how they need to look at something, but can mean that they only get that view; they stop being an analyst and start just being a consumer who gets given a number on a set schedule. The parameters allows uses to get back the level of control where they can ask questions of the data and not feel like they'll just end up downloading the dataset into a pivot table once they need to conduct deeper analysis.

Great combo of using bookmarks and field parameters. If we can make bookmark navigation by using any slicer selection that would be a game changer feature. We won’t need extra button to achieve those if implemented.

Great feature! I'm allready using this a ton and it is adding a lot of value to my users. My life got 10x easier with the field parameters. I went from about 20-40 bookmarks to more like 10 (for similar functionality as above). What I'm really hungry for is instead a way to use code to build the layout and set up the visuals. I want to use code to position, set settings for the visuals, add the x, y values/measures etc. Then I could spit out, modify and update reports much more efficiently. Just think about the ability to allow multi language for the same report. Just some search and replace and then you have a copy in another language. And with code those things could be automated and put into CI! Now I have to use the tedious visual GUI to set all of this up. The bookmarks for example that you display here, it is such a pain to do it! Shure it's cool and gives tons of freedom, but it is still pain! Are there any plans on opening up code for the programming of the GUI (visuals etc.)??

I have done something like that. But instead of a normal slicer, I change it to Chiclet slicer (I think it looks prettier after some fancy formating). And I use 3 field parameters, one for X axis, another for Y and a 3rd one for the value. Doing this to give users as much flexibility as I can.

Wel this is excellent functionality and workarounds.. I used it earlier.. the only problem in my opinion is that you need to make multiple bookmarks for each visuals.. so if the report has many report pages and as well many visuals included.. this will end up with tens or hundreds of bookmarks

I did something like that for a while, but my report have about 200 distinct users and they all have personal preferences and data needs, managing the bookmarks and field parameters just became too much. I went back to activating the "personalize visual" button and now they have access to everything and they can do whatever they want with it.

A problem I have with bookmarks is that the "data" option you showed only works for slicer visuals. If I have say a bar chart, and I click one bar, I cant persist that across bookmarks. The filter context always resets in this scenario.

Hey Patrick, I have built a 'golden' dataset in my org that we will use as a base for multiple reports. I've learned that in order to create Field Parameters you need to modify the dataset, but mine is quite big and has IR set on it. Is there a way to create these Field Parameters without re-uploading the dataset to the service and without creating a separate 'composite' (Direct Query to dataset) dataset?

@@kevarnold I mean, it's not that I don't want to use them, I just wanted to have a clean workspace with one cube and many reports. But after a second thought, I should consider using a composite model, since we still haven't made our mind on Premium and I cannot use ALM Toolkit trick without the XMLA endpoint. Do you know if I can share a report with a user without sharing a dataset, so that they only see one dataset in the workspace?

A great video! I am encountering a problem with default gauge visual. The requirement is to have a card visual in the middle of the gauge visual to show the remaining value. As work progresses, the current value would move from left to top and to right. This leads to the gauge's ring moves as work progress which causes the card visual off-center. The dashboard does not allow interactive clicks, so bookmark is not likely to solve the problem. What would you do?

Im still looking but their may already be an answer. I will be showing graphs to a multilayer heirachy. I would like to limit each user to only see their day going down. This seems to be a case of duplicating the report multiple times and excluding all data not applicable to that user, likely at the query or the overall filter

Where I am struggling a bit with this approach, in contrast to the "Personalize visuals" function that became GA in October 2020, is visual cross-filtering behavior. The selection on charts that are hidden or in the background still apply to cross-filtered visuals. It can get confusing for the user to understand when cross-filer selections are applied or reset when switching between bookmarks showing or hiding visuals with an active cross-filter selection. Let's assume next to the area with the switchable chart type there is a card visual showing a KPI. What cross-filter interaction settings would you recommend between the switchable charts and between each switchable chart and the card visual and why?
