To my surprise I like the S20 a bit more than the 12.2, especially with classical music. They sound more open and spacious.

I had the Polk S20 for testing. Really good, broad soundstage, controlled and deep bass and the highs smooth. But with the midrange I honestly had some issues. They are in some frequencies boosted and in lots of songs they sound like out of a can. You can hear it in this video also. So this effect made them sound bit hollow and at some songs bit muddy.. but that’s my own opinion, many people will like them anyway. I like more a neutral frequency response. But indeed the Polk S20 and S20e are good speakers for an affordable price! :)

The 12.2's for my ears. Gee. Yet again, I am finding different tracks sound great through the two sets of speakers depending on the type, some tracks the S20's sound good, others its the 12.2's but overall for my ears, its the 12.2's. Thanks. Gee. 3rd edit, my wife prefers the 12.2's, guess that's it then. 😄

Fantastic review! Polks are amazing. I think mid-range is awesom! I think they worth every penny. I like 12.2 too. But they cost double than S20 and sound very close.

To me the 12.2 sounds somewhat more relaxed/laidback (British sound). The Polks are more forward, but not in a (bad) way like a well known manufacturer with midrange dips. They did it quite OK actually, where Q Acoustics comes to mind re. transparancy. I found the 12.2 a bit more true to voices, instruments and more intimate overall. Liked the Polk for projecting more 'bite' and being so clear. Unfortunate, fine details are hard to compare, but thats YT. Both serve different taste well. Nicely done E Project, you are making it more challenging everyday 😄

The tweeter on the Polk S20 is kind of veiled and slightly muted which gives the sound a kind of smooth and easy feeling, but we don't hear much details like the decay of notes. It is better with the wharfdale but the mids are recessed also. I am not sure if the amp is not a bit at fault here because on other videos, the S20 sounds a little better...

The S20 sounds cuppy and 'horn-y'. Go to 2:47 and wait for the transition, instant hollowness. Vocals on Time Travelling sound weird too. Go to 15:00 and wait for the transition... wth... the S20 sounds like its playing from the other end of a tunnel in comparison. The lifted treble of the Polk gives a sense of airiness and spaciousness, but all speakers with a lifted top end do that.

I tried to listen to the resolution of the audio, to focus on the smallest details. And I eventually found that, even your recording quality is good, it's not enough to judge the resolution of speaker tweeters. It's really difficult to achieve life-like audio quality on KZfaq I suppose.

The standard youtube mp3 audio signal is lossy digital compression wich only extends up to 15 khz, so extreme treble information is deleted, but more than good enough to hear most of the high frequency's to judge a speakers general treble quality. His recordings generaly are too. The quality of your playback equipment is also a factor. Some channels offer 4k video with higher fidelity audio, but not E Project. Nothing is the same as hearing in person, of course.

I’m not an audiophile guy, but, if these speakers were doing actual work, it seems as though the Polks are doing it without any effort. More of the natural nuances of , let’s say, the reverb from cymbals, aren’t overly pronounced that come straight at you but seemingly are so much more lifelike, that the sound surrounds you. Midrange melts clean both into the treble and bass. Bass on the Polks doesn’t seem to drop off at all at the lower part of the spectrum and refuses to give up accurate frequency all without being “boomy”. The S20s sound more efficient.

This is a tough one. The Polks have just as good bass as the 12.2s, maybe even better, 'cause it's faster and cleaner, less bloated and boomy, and they have clearer mids and highs, without sounding too bright to me. Listen to how much more open and natural the vocals are on Time Traveling, and the acoustic guitar on Fields. They have better imaging too. I think I like them more than the 12,2s, or even the KEF Q350s, and they only cost $299. I'd like to hear them with the AXR85 or AXA35 too

Yeah, S20s do sound nicely balanced without sounding bright and the 12.2s always sound like there's just a little bit missing in the midrange. The BBC dip ?

@@davidcarr2216 Yep. I listened to a comparison of the 12.1s and my older 9.1s and it was the same way. Monitor Audio is getting more that way too, because they all see how well speakers like that from B&W and Klipsch sell

I'm surprised this one is so close for me. The S20 is far better balanced than it's S10 baby brother. It actualy has bass comparable to the 12.2. A bit deeper, I think. The 12.2 has a more lively character to its mids and treble with more energy in the 3 to 5khz presence region, and the Polk is more full at 1khz and below. Neither is completely nuetral or crazy far off, but different. Overall I definately prefer the Diamond with the 316 BEE, and suspect it might be more with warmer amps, but this Polk isn't embarassed by the Diamond here.

Sounds like maybe polk has brighter top end. But polks also have advantage of measurably higher sensitivity at around 88db/w whereas 12.2 is probably under 86db/w. Wonder which would be better for home theatre use? How about as bookshelf center?

Guys please forgive my ignorance. I'm just new to hi-fi systems. I own a denon record player and I will get these POLK S20s which are said to be manufactured by the same company and therefore they should be paired for best performance. Do you agree? I will also be using a denon pma600Ne amplifier. I want to know what the stands right below the speakers called? I believe they function to reduce surface resonance, right?
