A new Kia EV6 or a used Jaguar I-Pace? Which would YOU choose?

The new EV6 from Kia is tasked with shifting people's perception of the brand. It is designed to lift them away from the makers of worthy but dull cars to giving buyers a truly stylish and technological rival to the established, and more common-place German premium marques. In other words, it has to do the same job for Kia that the I-Pace did for Jaguar. The electric cat from Coventry shook off that stuffy Gentleman's-club-on-wheels image that Jaguar had become renowned for with its older products. A technical tour-de-force the like of which the brand had never done before.
Both cars are very similar in size, style, power, range and if you look at the used market in the Jaguar's case, price. So the big question is, what would you buy? A brand new Kia or a used Jaguar? We pit both contenders against each other in a full AutoEV Road Test to bring you the definitive answer.

I've owned my I-Pace HSE for 3.5 years and love it but when I had problems caused by a faulty 12V battery I started to look seriously at alternatives. I have driven the EV6 (and really liked it), the Audi, BMW, Merc's and Tesla's - all of which were very disappointing in their own ways but I was seriously interested in the EV6. But once the frustration of the 12V battery problem was fixed on the I-Pace I fell in love with it again. There are cars with more range than the 240 miles I get and that charge faster - but I have only charged away from home 5 times and never on a charger capable of more than 50kW. Both Jaguar and Kia have excellent Heads Up Display options - something which other manufacturers refuse to fit or charge a fortune for (I would never buy a car without HUD again). Every car is a compromise and everyone has their own preferences which are sometimes hard to put into words. I can live with the few things I'd like to improve on the I-Pace, except for the poor rear view. This problem is shared with the EV6 because they both have small rear windows and no rear wiper. I have fixed that for less than £200 by fitting an aftermarket electronic rearview mirror that includes front and rear dashcam's and because I have fitted the rear camera under the spoiler it is higher up than the reversing camera. Now I never have a problem with a dirty rear screen, a bulky load or passengers in the back seat obscuring the view. In years to come, I think that the I-Pace will become a classic collectors car, its aluminium construction will mean that it will still be in good condition long after all the steel Model 3's and the like have rusted away. It may well be that the battery will need replacing in another 7 years, who knows? But by then, new battery technology will be available to give a new lease of life with greater range and faster charging and when the car is 10 years old I might be prepared to risk testing the great off-road capability! Meanwhile, I'll still keep my eye out for something better just in case. I doubt that future Jaguar models will be in my price range and I had high hopes for the new Lotus SUV but from early photographs, it looks quite ugly. In my view nothing quite matches the style of the I-Pace (yet).

Your concerns sound very familiar to my own : the i-Pace is a wonderful car and although it’s technology is getting surpassed left and right by other brands i have not yet seen an EV that combines style, performance and luxury together. I am very very happy with my Jaguar despite my poor experiences with the JLR garage (also 12V related).

I remember watching this video when I was debating exactly this! Ordering a new EV6 or buying a used iPace. I went for the iPace (HSE 71 plate, 10,000 miles) and I love it! It has everything! It's such a fun and exciting car to drive, comfortable and has every feature I'd want. So thanks for this video - it certainly helped me make the right (I hope) decision!

In 2 years with my second hand iPace it’s the first car where I haven’t missed a rear wiper and I find the (pre-facelift) infotainment really good. I chose it over the EV6 because, at the time, the EV6 had a 10 month order time and the Jag handled better. I can sit and cruise all day and then still have fun on the twisty roads. I have had 12v battery issues (fixed under warranty) but Kia, VW, older Teslas etc also have those issues. I’d like the faster charging but in the UK there aren’t many chargers over 100kWh anyway. Even if I won the lottery I wouldn’t buy anything else until there’s something with significantly better range and efficiency. I can’t believe you can get something electric this good for £30k. It’s just the best car I have ever driven.

Good comparison. However, as an owner of Jag, I missed few important details about Jag. 1. Interior. Jag has extended leather interior, when the front dash and doors covered with the real leather. Also, alcantara headlining. This just gives different feel of interior. Even the smell is different. Which Kia will never have. 2. Suspension. There is air suspension option for Jag. That's just different league. 3. Maximum rims size are 22 inch. And it rides fantastically well with them. I don't feel any noticeable comfort difference between my winter 20 and summer 22. Haven't seen a car which rides so good on 22 wheels. 4. Audio. Meridian Surround is just fantastic system. Not sure if Kia has anything close in terms of sound. 5. Design. Of course this is very subjective. However, my opinion is Kia's design is kind of pop-ish. Looks actual now , but aging very fast. As it happens often with Asian brands. Jags on the other side is 5 years old and still looks fabulous! So all in all Jag is just a higher class of the car. If you can afford it go and take it!

Good comments. I think you are absolutely right about the styling. The Kia catches the eye, but at the same time there's a lot about it that seems naive. The rear spoiler integration into the side sweep is a nice gesture, but then they busied up the rear design with some other nonsense. The Jaguar styling exudes mature confidence. The Kia is a bit young and desperate.

I have a 2022 Jaguar I Pace EV400 HSE, Santorini Black, Air Suspension, which I bought all new, will never trade this great looking car and the luxury it provides. All leather off white Windsor leather interior, Thank God no TV inside like other cars. We dropped Ford Macee Mustang, Tesla Model 3, and Kia EV 5 or 6. So much plastic being used in Kia and the metal sheet is so thin. You get what you pay for. Jaguar is a class of it's own. The range doesn't bother me, just charge after every 3 hours when on long drive, what's the rush, what else? I am not afraid of the discontinuance of the I Pace in 2025. It will be collectors item. Not afraid of the battery being degraded after 7 years and requires to change the battery. Tell me which Car gives you any guarantees of a life long Battery? Jaguar is expensive but the best looking EV. I don't have any problems with the Car, well as yet. Congrats to all proud Jaguar owners. So much negative talk about the I Pace on the You Tube, makes me sick.

Just got myself a bright blue I pace and absolutely love it. At the moment these are a hidden gem as they are extremely good value on the used market. I think people are worried about cost of ownership but all EVs have expensive components just get an extended warranty for £40 a month. And a lot more can go wrong with a combustion engine. But with the Jag you get Porsche 911 performance (almost) with pure luxury, refinement, an amazing digital cockpit and a great Meridian sound system. It’s a no brainer! Once people discover just how good these cars are demand will rise as will prices. Get one while you can

I enjoyed the review. I've owned an ipace 2yrs and 11mths now and still look for any opportunity for a drive. It's gone 41000mls to date and has had only one problem that stopped it, which was fixed by a software upgrade. I don't notice the laggy info centre because I only use it for voice phone calls, maps, radio and trip info, all of which are fast enough. There are 2 features in the ev6 that would be nice... the 800v system and the dog clutch a front wheel. I am sure that in the next 3 years will bring other ideas so I'll keep the ipace for some time yet.

To begin, I have been leasing a 2019 I-Pace in the USA since November 2019, and I plan to purchase this quality built vehicle in the next 3 weeks. I love driving the I-pace around town, and I charge nightly in the garage. I only have 2 negatives regarding this vehicle: 1. The low Amp starting battery (required but has a limited life), and 2. That JLR has not come forward to offer current owners the opportunity to upgrade their electrical from the 7KW to 11KW charging. As the I-Pace is a completely new vehicle from the ground up, comparing it to any previous Jaguar in terms of reliability and build quality is highly biased; especially since the I-Pace is built in Austria by Magna Steyr. I do agree the view out the rear window is quite limiting; at least there is a back-up camera. As I am the only driver of my I-Pace, and I almost never have rear seat passengers, removing the rear seat headrests does increase the view. Residents of the UK, may be interested to learn Jaguar in the USA includes a 5 year/60,000 mile warranty on the I-Pace with an 8 year/100,000 (70% State of Health) warranty on the battery.

Really helpful review as I'm on exactly this journey. Thanks in part to your excellent reviews I'd whittled down the choice to Enyaq (my head) and EV6 (my heart) and now this third possibility comes along as the Ev6 (my head) and (ever since watching the speedo judder to the ton on our neighbour's Mark 2, I've always wanted one) the Jag (my heart). Used I-paces seem incredibly good value but there are so many bad reviews of reliability and particularly of bad service from dealers that I fear buying a car with such a short warranty period. I could justify the extra insurance and servicing costs by the saving in buying used but the peace of mind of a 7 year warranty on an EV6 is very persuasive.

Great concept to compare the used Jaguar to the new Kia because they'd be similar in price. They both look nice on the outside but the Jaguar is another level inside. Also many people say that the Kia is not a good handling vehicle when cornering and that the Jaguar is which would make all the difference to me. Favorite feature on the Kia is the adjustable Regen located on the steering wheel via paddle shifters. I found I was using them like down shifters brilliant. It's hard to get either one of these cars in the states right now. Would love to see a comparison between the i pace and the pole star 2 is there both more of a driver's car. I could listen to your Scottish accent all day btw.

I have the EV6 GT S AWD and sold my Ipace HSE to buy the EV6. I have driven Jaguar for decades but the every worsening quality of Jagura cars and JLR in general persuaded me to look around for my next EV. The tech in the EV6 specially the top of the range like mine and also the interior makes my old Ipace look like something from the 80's. The one big difference between the 2 is the EV^s charging ability, speed etc. I have now ordered the EV6 GT as I have been that impressed with the EV. As for being a drivers car, as an ex ipace owner the EV6 is far more of a driver's car than both the ipace and the pole star. In the GT version EV6, it is beast ready made for the track.

About the rear window lack of wiper: Clearsight rear mirror makes that totally unnecessary for the Jag. The view out of the rear window in the jag is horrible anyway but the Rear Clearsight mirror camera (mounted on the antennae shark fin) is separate from the rear camera mounted on the boot handle and both cameras make backing out better than any view through the rear window itself. Also the rear backup camera has a spray to clear out any gunk that works very well.

Ive come from an XF so its a big step up for me and personally I think its an absolutely awesome car. recently in my country (Switzerland) the i-Pace became a real bargain due to a flood* of i-Pace coming of lease. This combined with a lack of notoriety (everyone having forgotten about it being the car of the year…bad management by Bolloré deciding to only update details and NOT the thing that matter (better thermal management of the battery leading to competitive charging speed) means that now the clearing price (price at which it goes in one week) is close to 65% discount from new for a 2019. Just bought one in fact with such a discount, 12 month warranty as well as 4 new wheels with winter tires included. (HSE First Edition January 2019 with 58’000 km (not miles)). *flood is relative, as they never sold well in the first place and remains a rare sight - but it is a flood in relation to what the market CAN absorb hence the recent steep price drop.

I purchased the first edition back in 2018. It had a few issues regarding the screens. I loved the handling but not the range. It was £80k back then and range could easily drop to around 150 miles if you used it slightly enthusiastically. I returned it after 2 weeks because of that. I’m glad I did as depreciation is eye water like all current EV’s. Seriously considering buying a 1-2 year old example though. New electric Jags coming out soon should be very interesting but I just can’t stand loosing £30-40k in depreciation over such a short period of time.

We have an ionic 5 ultimate (same platform as Kia Ev6) and we just purchased a used approved first edition iPace, both are great cars but the iPace is definitely a class above, the design, interior finish and quality of the Jag is gorgeous and the driving experience is engaging and thrilling in dynamic mode. I’ve owned top spec bmw, Audi and mercs and can honestly say Ipace is best car I’ve ever owned. It was a car way ahead of its time in my opinion.

Very good review and resonates with the dilemma I had. After waiting 5 months for my new Kia and no end in sight to delivery I cancelled my order and got a 3.5 year old ipace with 10,000 miles. It cost more - 2nd hand prices are very high but am very pleased with it. I do wonder if in the long term I have made the right decision - only time will tell. Without doubt the ipace feels like a premium car and you feel special driving it - the performance and handling is mind blowing. Other than a slow to operate sat nav and the apple car play doesn’t want to play ball it seems fine to me. This was a lottery win car for me and so chuffed that I have got one - 2nd hand just put it in reach.

I had the same wait for an Ioniq5, I cancelled mine and couldn't believe that with the Jaguar £3000 dealer contributions and a free podpoint home charger it was actually cheaper than the Ioniq5. I've only had the car a couple of weeks but it's amazing.I definitely think that you made a very wise choice.

Great review and a clever way to make comparison on similar price cars. The only thing I would perhaps consider is 'whole life cost of ownership'. Finance agreements and residual values can have a marked difference on true cost ownership. We bought an BMWiX3 MSport Pro 2022 model in March, which after shopping around came out overall cheaper over 4 years than the lesser model MSport some £3,000 screen price less. And also, new cars have much more attractive finance rates subsidised by manufactures than second owned cars. Food for thought and maybe easy to research?
@emperorbruce1551
@emperorbruce1551 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. The problem with EV's is that the market doesn't understand them yet so it's impossible to estimate a realistic 'whole life cost of ownership'. EV's have less moving parts than ICE cars and so will age and wear out in different ways. We will not know what the typical useful life of an EV battery is for another 4 or 5 years and. I suspect that we will find that the average life of an EV could be double what we now expect from an ICE car. Whilst the cost of replacing the battery might be several thousand pounds, it's still less than changing an ICE drivetrain. Apart from accidents, the main reasons for scrapping cars are rust and wear of the moving parts in the engine, gearbox, clutch, turbocharger, differential, cooling system etc.

@Emperor Bruce we've got two good data points for how EVs age in the renault zoe and the nissan leaf. Of those one takes great care of its battery and in return has plenty of health a decade later. Modern cars broadly take great care of their batteries. Expensive parts that fail early are the onboard charger in 2011-2012 Leafs and the aircon system on Zoes which is only expensive because of its tight integration with the battery.

The newer cars use the Pivi Pro system that JLR now use throughout their products ranges. This isn't just a software update, but a different system, so as far as I am aware, the earlier cars cannot be retrospectively fitted with the Pivi Pro system.

Yes ! At last a comparison of those 2 cars I love the most ! Bought a used I-Pace 20 months ago and it's the best car I've ever driven, looks incredible and driving fast is as nice as driving cool on this I-Pace :). EV6 is certainly not as fun to drive but I'm wondering if the EV6 GT would be a worthy successor. Love all your review but I have to say the older infotainment is not bad : I had like 4-5 OTA updates and now there are nearly no more bugs and CarPlay works perfectly, and I find the design of this infotainment much better than in the EV6 which looks cheap and dated. Also you can setup the screen behind the wheel with full map, 1 or 2 dials, driving assist etc, so I definitely think it's certainly not that bad.

Works but not as good as a new one. Im also not convinced jag are in anyway interested in keeping it up to date with software updates in particular as they are to stop production soon. I think the comments an amazing car has been left behind is correct. Jag would rather you buy a new one than encourage the used EV market

This was my dilemma, with such great tax advantages for company EVs in the UK. I’ve gone for the iPace because it’s British, a bit nicer, controls are a bit easier in my opinion, it looks a bit nicer, it’s a bit faster, boot is a bit bigger and I couldn’t live with that funny boot spoiler on the EV6; most importantly, there’s a 10 month wait for the Kia, and I would always have regretted not trying the Jag. One small thing, I’d never realised how much more intuitive it would be to have the steering wheel buttons on the correct side for a right hand drive car. Close run thing as the Jag is a bit too flashy for me and really a bit too wide for the lanes around here (maybe the Kia is too), and perhaps it will do a few more miles on a charge? At three years old my Jag is immaculate and feels new, just make sure you get the right spec… I didn’t remember to check for heated seats 🤭 A little bit less efficient (2.7-3 miles/kWh) but no regrets while I wait for a Mini Clubman EV with 250 miles of range 🙂

Thanks for this amazinfg video, really enoyed in. Just sold my 2021 EV6 after 19 months, what a great great car! but had issues after 19month, no parts unless you wait 3-6 months!!! actually just broke even when selling and got my deposit, EV6 was left down by Kia itself on parts and quality really, fragile plastic inside, fragile exterior paint, Kia warrenty will not cover everything, never in its life gets 300+ miles range unless you drive at 40mph (tracked with GPS)...anyway, I wont put anyonme off an EV6, great machine you will not regret buying one. I paid £43k for it with £4k deposit in with heatpump. Sold for £39k, got £4k deposit back and broke even. I paid just under £12k in PCP renetals in 19 months, thats expensive for a Kia! thats what you get for buying new. Not so much depreciation but the cars been for sale since I took it into Kia dealership.... not moved yet. I have since moved onto a £0 deposit 2020, 29k miles driven e-tron 55 luanch edition with all factory options selected, 3 year extended Audi warranty, 5 left on battery, 2 free services, refurbed all 4 wheel and new tires, paint detailed/corrected, free wall charger voucher, extended myAudi/Maps licence for 4 years, 1 free year access to Audi charging by Elli, black Audi emblems from dealership and fitment. The e-Tron was cheaper than the Kia in total and it's cheaper per month, with £0 deposit. Yes its only 200-240 miles range thoughout the year but I'll live with that, charging is fast, e-Tron is a rocket at charging, faster than the Kia was on 150kw chargers anyway, 2-80% in under 22mins. i charge at home and a full tank on the e-tron costs me £6.40, gets 200ish miles.I do find the e-tron in dynamic mode/boost mode, faster, more capible than the EV6 was, its a big wagon tbh, I trust it better for some reason, it handles better, in the wet, EV6 was a slipper car, back end kicking out mostly with the slightest of wet/damp scottish conditions,, e-tron is in its own leauge with quality and kit, way above what Kia was IMO. The list price of the e-tron I just bought was £89750 bacsue the sticker was on the cars log sheet in glove box lol... So, this goes to show how bad depreciation actually is for some cars. There are mega used EV deals out there!. We also got a used e-208 for the Mrs, 2020 plate, 3k miles driven from CARZ for £24k. It;s basically a new car on an old plate, fantactic wee car, 200 miles range in town easy. I did look at i-pace, but they wanted £££ deposit.... and didnt have spec I wanted. Yet again, enother great car! I did drive the Tesla Y and M3, wasnt a fan, BMW were too expensive for me. Wish I had found an i-pace i liked though. I have seen EVs gopes for £8k! usually nice i3's

Impossible to put these in the same class. Jag, even today, is still compatible with most EVs and better looking with a better ride, more comfort and just a true luxe feeling. Sorry, pass on the Kia, as good as it may be to some. I don't drive a car based on how fast it charges when l generally charge at home and never drive more than 100 miles in a day. If l have to suffer a bit of a wait to harge up to do an occassional long distance drive to live with the Jag...happy to take the break.😅

Although it seemed fairly roomy I kept banging my head on the side of the roof (don't think at 6'2" I have ever felt so cramped in the front seat of a car). I wanted to like it but in every respect the I pace is still a cut above in just about every respect. A decent low mileage I pace would definitely be a better bet. Having said that the full fat Gt version of the kia could be interesting. Its an absolute travesty that jaguar haven't released an SVR version of the I Pace

Thx for the report. Funny is that I´m just asking myself that question: Used I-Pace or nearly new EV6. Beside your comments and explanations the comments of all viewers are also very informative. But that there are no technical problems with the Jag is not correct, is it? Here in Germany the Jag has a big issue with the HV battery, which requires an exchange of it, as far as I understood. And it´s not only related to the MY 2019/2020 but also to MY´s of 2021/2022. Of course before buying one I just have to make sure that this upgrade has been done already by Jaguar. Regarding the usability: I´m just wondering how you will succeed to charge the 77kWh battery of the EV6 within 7h 20min from 0...100% with a 7kW AC charger... (at 35:26) 🙂 Thank you again and kind regards Stephan

The 7 year warranty has to be a massive consideration - +much as I love the Jaguar brand, the i-Pace is almost at end of life and I'd be concerned at potential out of warranty repair costs....... That's before you consider the better range and faster charging of the Kia. Yes the i-Pace may be nicer to drive and sit in, but this would be secondary for me.

Interesting concept to compare new to used. I think that you don't take into account something significant and that's battery degradation. The Kia already has a slight advantage on range new against new, but I would imagine that a used Jag would have lost some range over 2 years or more.

We had the 1st Edition Jaguar I-Pace just shy of 3 years. The tech in the car was so inconsistent not to mention the SQUEEKY brakes! The sensors in the Jaguar would beep after being completely stopped, the Lane keep assist would "nudge" the car even though the blinker was on to turn that direction, the infotainment screen would stay black at times for 2 - 5 minutes.... The Jaguar dealership brought me gas loaner cars when they would service the I Pace. Some of the exact same issues occurred in their gas cars, so it wasn't a First Edition Electric Car issue. We have traded the I Pace for the EV6, as we like the shape and look of both cars. We couldn't be happier with the KIA EV6 and love it so much more than the consistently-inconsistent Jaguar. My adult children have stated that the back seat area is much more roomy and comfortable in the EV6 than the I Pace too. The I -Pace had higher end finishes like suede roof panels, but I would give them up any day for safety and consistency. Our 1st edition I Pace with 21" wheels also got 185 - 200 miles on a charge when doing freeway driving. :( The I Pace can take a maximum charger of 150 kw, while the EV6 can charge by a 350 kw charger! Happy shopping to those reading and glad you're shopping for an EV!

First of all Stuart, thank you for watching, taking the time to comment, and for your kind words. It is an interesting point you raise, however, as Kia is a sister brand to Hyundai, who also owns Genesis, they see the latter one as the premium brand. In other words, if you want a car that is essentially an EV6, then you buy the Genesis GV60. Kia will try to be a more sporting, youthful brand, with Hyundai remaining the core volume one, but with its sporting 'N' sub brand. Watch out for the future Ioniq 5 N for instance! But seriously, take a look at the Genesis GV60 too. A fine motor car in our view. Thanks again for watching and supporting the channel. Bryan @ AutoEV.

Do notch back saloons have rear wipers? No. Do they get rain or ice collecting on the rear window? Yes. The reason we started to see rear wipers fitted to hatchbacks and estates was due to muck and filth being thrown up and sticking on the rear window. These manufacturers have it right, the aero on these cars prevents road grime getting to the rear screen. . I have had my I-Pace for 4 1/2 years now covering nearly 50,000 miles and the rear screen just doesn't get dirty and obscured and rear wipers just look ugly so why add them and destroy the drag coefficient.

It's very hard to say with confidence as the Jaguar is just 4 years old. However, what I will say is that everyone I spoke to who have owned I-Paces have all said that, infotainment system aside, they never really had any issue over a few years of ownership. One said he had an issue one day with the car not recognising the key, but it came down to the battery in the key being low. Once replaced, it seemed to be fine after that. I wouldn't have any problem in putting money into a modern Jaguar anymore than I would a BMW or Mercedes to be honest.
