A while back I gave you a tour of my G scale outdoor garden railway and I mentioned some of the improvements I wanted to make over the Summer. Well as we've had plenty of sun lately I've been out in the garden working on the railway and things have definitely started to change.
There's brand new rolling stock which has allowed me to make up a nice mixed train as well as the main station building getting a tidy up too. The lineside also has some new fencing to keep trespassers off the line (although it hasn't stopped the dog walking over the railway!) but most excitingly the garden railway has a brand new loco!
Originally a playmobil steam engine, I have big plans in mind for this humble new loco to turn it into something that resembles a British outline narrow gauge engine. So far I've managed to fit a decoder and the loco is now on test to make sure there's no problems before I start work for real!

Nice idea with the solar power station it really makes use of natural elements to power a garden railway. Also I’m gonna call the little green engine Gregory from now on since it seems to be the smallest engine of the fleet so far.

Absolutely! I think I'd feel a bit guilty wasting electricity otherwise, especially for the building lights. Haha, nice name. I've got a theme in mind for naming all my locos but you're welcome to call it Gregory for now. Thanks for watching 😃

Thanks for sharing, what a great update. A gas burner in the mamod is the best way to go. I have a gas burner in a 3/4" scale traction engine and it works brilliantly. The solid fuel tablets just don't make enough heat. A garden railway blog called the "peckforton light railway" had an entry on anglocising an LGB stainz loco that you might be able to get a few tips and ideas from to help you with your playmobile loco. I know you said you wouldn't do anything to the cab but I think that it needs so new cab handrails. Thanks, Robert

Glad you enjoyed it Robert! Yes I'd heard the gas burners were a very good upgrade from the solid fuel. Just need to find the funds now 😂 Ah yes I've been following Rik's blog for a while now, his garden railway is fantastic and definitely something I've been heavily inspired by. Thanks for watching 👍

The railway is really coming along. Love the solar panel for the station. Also congrats on the addition of your solar panels to help with power. I have solar panels and love them. The new loco is perfect, matches the rolling stock. Thanks for sharing and stay safe. Ken

Thanks Ken, the solar panels (big and small!) are both working really well. Yes I got quite lucky that the loco matches the coach livery. I'm looking forward to making it look a little more British too. Thanks for watching 😃

When I had a garden railway i purchased some inexpensive solar lights which I customised to look more like platform lights which looked rather nice . I liked the way they seemed to spontaneously light up as if being lit by station staff.

I'd love to hqve a day out there! It looks great. It all looks so natural and scenic. About the mamod, I personally think you should go with meths. Ceramic gas burners can be temperamental. They can over heat easily and some have a roaring sound as they burn. Meths is rather clean but you can't see the flame very well. Hope these tips help
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it is lovely to have the trains trundling round the garden. That's good info to know about the burners. The meths burner does seem more simple but I'd heard it can spill more easily too if the loco derails... which knowing me it's a very likely possibility 😆 Thanks for watching 👍

I ordered my Mamod used from the UK (I live in the US but I’m sure you can tell). It was fully upgraded with meths burner, better cylinders etc. I believe your Mamod should work just fine with the upgraded cylinders as mine is quite old from what I can tell. I believe dream steam sells them but if you want to use them you might have to invest in a lubricator as they have proper seals that will need to be lubricated. I think Dreamsteam also sells a higher rated safety valve that mine has. With that you should be able to get some good power out of your model. The only problem is when you buy all the parts it ends up costing the same amount as some more proper steam engines. I was lucky to purchase mine fully upgraded for about 2/3 of the actual price of everything new. Sorry about the long paragraph.😃
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
That's really great info, thanks for sharing all that! Yes I'd been looking at the stuff DreamSteam sell too and, like you say, while it's all fantastic it's just the price of all the upgrades I'm struggling with at the moment. I do often wonder whether I'd be better of saving up a bit extra and going for a Roundhouse loco later down the line instead 🤔 Thanks for watching 👍
@H.O.Scalemodeler4501

@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I will add, my engine is gauged for 32mm so your mileage may very with the upgraded cylinders. I think they will still fit 45mm but you might have to look around some forums to confirm this.

Have you thought that you may be using the wrong oil for your mamod? I used to use 3 in 1 oil on mine and it would barely move. Switched to motor oil (any thicker oil will be better, steam oil is best ofc) and it felt like a completely different engine.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
I use the MSS Steam Oil, the same type that came with the loco originally so I would hope that would be ok. I don't know if you've seen my original video on reviving the Mamod live steam engine but it's already gone from barely able to move to being quite sprightly - it's just some of the gradients on the outdoor layout it doesn't like. Thanks for watching 😃

As someone who doesn’t live in the uk, I’ve always wondered, are g scale and o gauge the same? Like how ho/oo are the same? Like if you bought the dapol panier, could you run it on ur g scale track
@roberthopper1872
@roberthopper1872 2 жыл бұрын
G scale (narrow gauge on 45mm gauge track representing 1meter/3 foot gauge) is 1:22.5, SM32 (narrow gauge on 32mm gauge track representing 2 foot guage) is 1:19 and 0 guage is 7mm scale representing standard guage on 32mm guage track (sorry I don't know the ratio)
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Robert's already done a really good job of explaining but just to reiterate what he said, G Scale runs on track the next size up from O Gauge. Where G Scale tends to be narrow gauge models, the standard gauge equivalent is Gauge 1. Believe me it took me a while to get my head round it too! Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃
