A New Set of Wheels - Under the Cover: A Bookbinder's vlog no. 2 - Making a Finishing Tool Rack

Between bookbinding projects I will often take some time to make improvements to my workspace. This project is one that I've been meaning to get done for quite a while, so I thought I'd share it with you. It's a bit of a digression from some of my other videos, but to me it's an important part of the overall reality of being an independent artisan. Good art deserves a good artistic environment, and though my studio does sometimes get out of hand, I try to step back and reset from time to time, and take incremental steps towards my ideal.
If you've been following me for a while then you probably know that I've been working on my leather tooling skills, learning as I go with a hodge-podge collection of homemade and second-hand tools. A pallet wheel was something I always wanted, but they're rare as hen's teeth in my part of the world, and the fancier designs were well beyond my ability to make myself. Imagine my reaction then when I saw this group advertised on an online marketplace! I of course didn't hesitate to make the deal, even though I probably couldn't afford it. Opportunities like that are once-in-a-lifetime, so no regrets.
Ever since then these tools have been languishing away in a drawer in my flat file, taking up valuable space meant for paper, but more importantly, not being used! This project solves both problems, putting them out in the open where they are well organized and accessible, and where I can let the sight of them inspire me to make more beautiful books!
My next task will be to clean these lovely antique tools; they came from a working bindery and have seen plenty of use, though little maintenance. I don't mind the patina, but some of the finer engravings are packed with debris and so need some TLC to get them into tip-top shape. Once they're tuned up it'll be time to put together some leather bindings and put them to use!

I think that consciously making your work space into an area you can not only function in, but also enjoy, is important. Too many tools are kept in random drawers and pots and boxes for many of us. Your shop is perfect in it's imperfection and it's eclectic collection of old and new.

Watching one of your videos the other day, your craftsmanship suddenly reminded me of Paul Sellers, the wonderful woodworker. And then *BAM* you take us on a road trip to your gorgeous shop! That is some collection of pallet wheels Dennis and I hope you'll give us some footage of how you get them all cleaned up. I imagine the worst of any dirt etc is going to be in the really fine (and therefore delicate) detail. Loved that you made those cabinets out of old drawers and even reused the fronts to make other parts 👍

Thank you, I hate to waste materials, so this was a good use for those drawers. And you are correct that the more detailed wheels will be the hardest to clean. Easy-does-it will be the key; I’d hate to damage even one.

@@FourKeysBookArts Used to clean Grandma's brass jugs and bowls with salt water and vinegar. Not sure if is worth ruining the patina. The oxide will keep forming every time you heat them.

I wish I had a man in my life growing up who could have taught and done projects with these with me so that I was handier. My pop and I reshingled our shed once but that was about it, aside from little things here and there. Your videos (and videos like them) help me to feel a connection to his departed spirit, but also help me to relate to other men as well as getting me interested in various woodworking skills (my uncles were all able to learn from him when they were young) but he was my grandfather and slowing down so our bonding time was primarily James Bond marathon weeks and Charleston Heston movies. Thank you for keeping his spirit alive and inspiring me to just go out and play with my tools. ... afterall I did just buy a lathe last year.

A lot of those old tools look like they are antiques and belong in a museum. Expensive collection of working tools.

I see what you mean, but for me I always wince a bit when I see hand tools locked away in museums. Good tools are meant to be used, and when properly maintained will far outlive their owners. I consider myself merely a caretaker, privileged to use and maintain these special tools until I can no longer do so, and then pass them on to the next generation.

@@FourKeysBookArts I agree, learning how to make new versions of these old tools is part of my plans. So many are now making and bringing these old skills back. Having the tools to do so is a restriction. I have an old watchmakers lathe, a full kit is very rare and sells for 6000+ pounds. Brass tools and tooling, including one day small lathes is what I am working on. CNC cut pattern wheels now on my list.

Nice! A couple of suggestions. I’d add a strip at the front of the cabinets to prevent the small tool handles from slipping out from the bottom as you move them in and out. It’s always when you’re trying to grab one. I’d also HIGHLY recommend you make a zero clearance insert for your table saw when you cut such thin strips as you did. It only takes one falling down next to the blade and getting thrown back to really ruin your day.

Those old tools are exquisite in their designs. I immediately tried to imagine how they were even made in the first place. I look forward to seeing the occasional one pop up in a video showing how you decide to tackle the delicate cleaning process - slowly would be my guess. 👍🏻🙌🏻

Really enjoyed watching you recycle those drawers to make something useful, however what I liked most of all was the fact you did not even consider restoring/cleaning those wonderful wheels. By their condition I could see that they were once loved and heavily used and I wonder what a story they could tell. Why do some people think that old tools need to be made to look as good as new?

You have a lot of tools. I like tools I tend to buy tools just because, it’s like art books got to have them. I have just started book binding ( about a year) and just can’t stoping them witch is good cause I’m just getting better. I’m looking for a really good book that explains well( I am very much a visual/ doer learner) so I haven’t got one that helps me to learn more. I have gotten a lot from watching you and I love the leather binding I’m just not that good yet to invest, one day if the cancer doesn’t kill me first. My books will be my legacy

Those turned out great. I was recently gifted a bunch of pallet wheels and could stand to make something similar. I'd love to see a video with any tips or tricks you might have for getting the best results using them. My impressions have been a bit spotty and inconsistent.

Hello. It’s good to see you after watching many of your videos lately. You are a very talented craftsman to say the least. I am finally beginning my adventure, and journey, into book binding. I’ve wanted to do it for many, many, years. And now I’ve decided it will wait no longer. I will wait no longer. I have a question for you if you would be so kind to answer it? I was wondering why some people wet leather and then press or engrave the leather and others heat their tools? Do both of these techniques have the same outcome or no? I have started purchasing leather stamping tools. Nothing professional, since I do not even know where to begin with that. And I want to see what these tools can do before spending much money on something I may not even use or be able to use. Also I’ve noticed that your leather working tools seem to be made of brass if I’m not mistaken? And of course they seem very old and wonderfully made. They really don’t make tools like this anymore that I know of. So I suppose that is my main question really. So stamping with wet leather and stamping it and working it with tools and your hand pressure different compared to the tools you use that you heat up and then press them into the leather? Do you need specific metal tools to be able to heat them without damaging the tools and the leather? Etc. I would be very grateful if you would share with me that info. I am just beginning my journey and look forward to making my own journals and notebooks for writing, journaling, sketching, and maybe some poetry, who knows. But I would like to do it right and use the right techniques and tools. If some of us do not learn these techniques they will be lost to time. I think it would be great if more craftsman could or would teach more people these wonderful old world crafts so they do not get lost. I find you’re instruction, your craftsmanship, peaceful approach, and to be honest, your way of editing your videos wonderful. why not make a small piece of wood with the thicknes of the tools as hole for the small ones so that they set more firm. other then that looking good

Interesting but have no big woodworking saws etc. I don't visually enjoy 3 d printed tools, but they are also "affordable." Why is contemporary affordable always ugly? Garish colors. Sharp angles. At best they look like toys. At worst they look disposable; as if even from the design standpoint they were meant to be junk. I'm thinking of a 3d printed bookbinding cradle I saw recently, as well as a spinning wheel I bought years ago. It was called The Babe. Believe me, it wasn't. PVC pipe, clanky foot pedals, a barely smoothed piece of pipe cut at angle on the top of the contraption.... Your iron bookpress, the wooden press, as well as the leather marking wheels are functional and beautiful, or quietly beautiful, or dignified... can't find the exact word...sorry about the rant. I like your channel.
